Barack Obama pushes for $1bn green tax credits | Environment | guardian.co.uk

"At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how much natural gas, or flex-fuel or electric vehicles you have if there's no place to charge them up or fill them up," Obama said.

I honestly didn't know if he understood that with the way he pushes alternative fuels. Nice to see for a change. Not a big fan of the tax credits for any energy source, but making available places to get them makes sense.

Preparing for the future reminds people that we have one.

Now is not the time to be putting out that kind of money. We don't have the vehicles to utilize this infrastructure. We should wait till they arrive and are affordable to the masses, which won't be for a long time.

In the meantime, Obama should be concentrating on the effects of high gas prices on our citizens right now. I don't think he will, though.

CBO: Tax Preferences Are Generally an Inefficient Way to Reduce Environmental Costs of Producing and Consuming Energy

What's a few billion more among friends.

What's the difference between a tax cut and a tax credit? I thought Conservatives liked those?

It's a chicken and egg problem. You want to wait for large-scale adoption before investing in infrastructure, but we won't see large-scale adoption until the infrastructure is put in place to support it.

I take it this is for serving stations?

In 2009, the government spent $2.3 billion on new vehicles for the U.S. government's fleet. Add another billion to that, and start shifting Washington DC to green cars. The stations to feed them will spring up paid for by the private sector. That'll get the ball rolling and serve a greater purpose. The government won

That's when I'll think our government is really committed to this green technology.

I just think the entire green jobs thing is aimless. Throw some money here then throw some money there. I just don't see it going anywhere. It is not productive. I love the idea of alternative energy sources but some things cannot be forced before their time. I know we need to experiment but let's get a more focused.

Well, let's at least wait until we have a vehicle that the average consumer will buy, eh? Otherwise, that billion will be wasted.

I think we wouldn't have computers -- let alone the internet -- if we had adopted that approach in the past.

Damn that would have been nice. I really liked being a kid with real toys and social interaction.

If they are equal. If they are targeted to a specific goal, then it messes with the market. So, an across the board tax cut or credit is good. A tax credit for one specific industry is bad.

seeing how we have trillions in debt there shouldn't be any tax credits regardless of the company.

Tax cuts are fine, as they help the economy. If done right, and you change nothing else, they would help decrease debt in the long term. But I agree with what you mean, that the first problem to deal with is reducing the deficit and then the debt.

I agree.

We need to stop digging before we start trying to fill in the hole.

The problem with all the stuff Obama comes up with is that he wants to dig faster...while tossing a few dirt clods back into the hole.

Yep, I say freeze everything for starters, and then reduce spending till it matches revenue. Then set aside x amount for paying down debt, and only then start monkeying around with the balance. But that sounds too much like what normal people do.

There are EV's already priced less than the average new car cost in the US. The US uses 25 % of the planet's cheap oil. The only way to lower world oil prices is to decrease demand.

There is one other way, according to what I learned in Ec 101. That would be to increase supply.

Building CNG fueling stations has already begun, as local governments need such facilities to fuel up CNG buses purchased for mass transit. Here in Lafayette, La., there has already been built one station that is open to the public, with two more to come on line soon to service parish government vehicles that are being converted to CNG, and oil and gas industry vehicles that use the fuel. Both will also be open to the public. 2 Natural Gas Fueling Stations Coming to Lafayette, La.

Right now CNG is clearly only cost effective for those with dedicated fleets that will be using their vehicles extensively, but I have hope that costs will come down and CNG will be a serious competitor with gasoline and diesel as transportation fuels.

How did they say to increase the world's supply of cheap oil? We haven't produced as much oil in the US as we consume since 1971.

Can you explain how tax credits designed to spur new products and services interferes with any of the above.

Approve pipelines and new wells, open oil fields now closed. Approve new refineries and updates and modernization for old ones. Stop looking for reasons to limit production. Encourage NG production. Just to name a few.

We have the highest US production of oil in a decade, how has that lowered world oil prices?

Although there may be some upgrades of older refineries, I cant find any evidence of requests for new refineries. Do you know of any requests that were denied?
