I tried hard not to be crass or judgemental, here.

But when you wake up and find your entire house is on fire: Who on EARTH thinks to save their SELVES first and not their KIDS? Parents should hightail it to their children's rooms FIRST damn thing. I don't care if the flames of hell are licking the sky. It's disgusting that they sacrificed their children to spare their selves - only to 2nd guess their decision and 'go back later' as if that makes up for their first act of pure selfishness.
 
When you are engulfed in flames, all movements are involuntary. He's a hero for going back inside to save the girls. That's all that needs to be said.
 
I think it would depend largely on where the fire is. If the fire separates you from the person you're trying to rescue then the smartest thing to do is go around and find another route. Based on the article I can't question what the parents did here. It doesn't say anything about the nature of the fire or its location, only that it moved very fast.
 
I'll only pray, then, that their actions were only to come back in another way to save their children or something and that they weren't only thinking about saving theirselves the entire time.
 
This is tragic. He did what he could and died trying to save his daughters.
