Another School Shooting

...The biggest bullies I have ever seen are old farts on message boards. MEAN and hypocritical old farts. They live for the past, never getting over a slight, always finding an excuse for being assholes....

you have no idea, how right you are.

How do you know? Presumably people who do the same things, have things in common. If we find the common foundation, then we might be able to address it as a country. There is a chance that we won't be able to prevent anything, but I find it pretty unfortunate and potentially dangerous that people like you attempt to shut down any hope to at least try to prevent these things.

Of course people who do the same things also have things in common. The common foundation is that the kid was emotionally out of control, and his perception was screwed up. He was probably depressed and taking it out on others. I have been clinically depressed several times over a 12 year period. I didn't shoot anyone, nor did I ever want to. The difference is that I have strongly embedded self-control mechanisms, even under extreme emotional duress. You can look at the commonalities, but you can't predict how individuals will respond on a case by case basis.

We always talk about what to do about school bullying, but we don't know what to do.

Shooting the unarmed in the back is a terrible, cowardly thing to do, but this kid sent a message to bullies everywhere. Be careful who you pick on.

School bullying has significantly declined since I was a kid. The only thing that would be sensible to do is for parents to teach their kids how to deal with it effectively, because you can't always control the behaviors of bullies, especially when these behaviors are in part based on instinct. If a bully causes physical harm- yes, you can take action on that, but if a bully is using verbal or emotional tactics, it's quite different.

It is fear parenting and-to me-not a healthy way to parent. There is also guilt involved when raising a child this way as in if they do something wrong Sky Papa will be pissed. Not to mention the fear of going straight to burn in hell forever and ever. Yep. That sure may work in some cases but think of the worry and fear that child must live with always worried god is watching their every move. This can backfire too and make a kid run away from Christian faith as soon as they are old enough to start thinking for themselves and questioning stuff. Which is healthy. Just my thoughts and no disrespect.

It is a question of degree, Kali. If you're in their face about it every day they probably will be messed up and/or rebel.... which would prolly be the case if you were in their face 24/7 about anything.

The right dosage of medicine can save your life, but just because two pills a day is good for you doesn't mean that 20 is even better... fanaticism is like an overdose of what would otherwise be healthy medicine.

Moderation in all things.

Heck, the way things are these days, being bullied may simply mean that other kids said he looked funny. If bullying were really the problem, we would have had at least a shooting per day when I was in high school.

I think one of the problems is that they have no outlet for dealing with their oppression. School's zero-tolerance policies have wussified our youth to the point where most of them can barely concieve of giving a bully a good beating.... which has salutary effects on the victim's self-esteem and the bullies' self-restraint! :)

In my day if someone exasperated you past all endurance, you could lay into them with both fists and do your darndest to give them a good beating. Even if you lost you could do some damage, earn some respect and maybe get a reputation of someone who was too much bother to bully.

Before it became a PC problem, and actually just before my time in grade school coaches who witnessed a fight took the two to the gym, put them in boxing gloves, refereed the fight and insisted on a handshake when they were done. From what I understand old enemies more times than not became close friends under those corrective measures.

They still did that once in a while when I was in school. Should have done it more often.

Young males need an outlet for their aggression, and a chance to respond to bullying and verbal abuse.

Yep. Plus it's hard to continue tormenting someone you just had to learn a little respect for.

I'm no expert here. I do not know what went on with this kid. We will have to wait and see.

As a generalization I think we enforce in some people's head that simple razzing is the same as bullying.

When I was a kid in high school, bullying was very common. It was much more than razzing, and often consisted of pushing, shoving, verbal insults, glaring, and threats. It was nothing unusual, but kids were emotionally able to handle it. It wasn't *nice*, but it was nothing unusual. Nowadays, kids seem to have much more trouble handling anything that upsets them emotionally. It's a cultural change in stress management and response, and probably not an increase in bullying. Unfortunately, a kid who is being bullied these days will get in trouble for responding with force, which is what the bully actually needs.

This is and will always be a perennial problem in U.S. The only solution is to ban guns but you guys can't live if the constitution is less favourable.

Banning guns in this country would make crime even worse than it already is. If we had a highly homogenous population with strongly shared values, you might have a point, but gun control in this country would be a huge mistake.

The "solution" is to understand the repercussions and consequences of freedom and liberty. To shoulder these freely and life as well as we can, as free as we can.

On the contrary. Crime is the result of possession of guns. We don't have a homogenous population here and crime as compared to other countries is rock bottom.

Crime would only increase if you have yet another perpetual cycle involved in finding all firearms as "contraband". Law enforcement, in my mind, already has enough to handle and that they can't handle with the resources being devoted to discouraging certain non-violent activities or illegal substances that pose no harm unless misused, and that are often individualized in potential for harm.

Education and full employment is the key.

Seems like this happens all the time these days. Never had this problem when I was in school. The only weapons we had were are fists and no one ever got hurt badly. I really think the fault of this is the parents. They let kids get away with murder without any retribution.

It appears that you have no concept of the extent of our welfare state. The cultural attitudes don't really facilitate education and full employment for some of the population. We have a huge diversity of lifestyles, value sets, and standards here.

I rest my case.

This statement reveals such an utter and complete ignorance of the topic in question that to even respond would be preposterous. We'd have to spend days educating you on basic facts about US and guns before we could even begin to explain to you why you're so wrong.

I've done this a hundred times.... I'm not in the mood to play to utter ignorance tonight.

I rest my case.

You can rest your case, but it's meaningless. We have a completely different welfare mentality here than in some parts of the world. We have generational welfare for 3-4 generations nowadays. It's a way of life. If we yanked the rug out from under them and expected them to make it or die, then there might be a change toward what you are talking about, but that's not going to happen in this country.

Spoken with the serene assurance of one who has no clue whereof they speak.
I'm trying to figure out where this supposed "case" is to rest. And what foundation choice this alleged "case" rests on, I think it's somewhere between quicksand and tapioca pudding.

I think it's a brief case and he left it at the office, lol.

I haven't read through the whole thread. Do we know where this kid got the gun? Was it his parents'?
