Here, in the Cleveland area. One dead, the rest in serious to stable condition.

CHARDON, Ohio - The chilling actions of a teenager as he systematically shot Chardon High School students sitting at a cafeteria table were captured by surveillance video at Chardon High School, which also showed the chaos afterward.According to a source who viewed the video, the student – identified by fellow students as T.J. Lane -- sat down by himself at a table in the cafeteria around 7:30 a.m. Within moments he reached into a pack or a bag. He pulled out a .22-caliber handgun.Lane walked around his table and stood behind students identified by classmates as Russell King, Demetrius Hewlin and Nick Walczak, all juniors and friends. Russell and Nick were waiting there before catching a bus to Auburn Career Center. The video shows Lane raising his gun and shooting, the source said. Russell, who students say was shot in the back, is at MetroHealth Medical Center. Demetrius, who students say was shot in the back of the head, is also at MetroHealth. Nick, who was shot numerous times, is in stable condition at Hillcrest Hospital.

I don't understand. In my day, the worst I worries about were knives. What happens to make a HS student into a mass murderer?

How did this high school student end up with a gun in school? I'm not a huge supporter of gun control but this is absurd! How many more of our youth need to die before something happens?

Some Cleveland area schools have metal detectors at the door. I don't know about this one. The whole thing makes me sick.....these poor families.

Gee, I don't know-since we impose the death penalty in ohio rather frequently and this moron is going to get life without parole at least-I guess we need to pass more laws that might deter him

the penalties against FIRST DEGREE MURDER apparently didn't deter him. Maybe making it illegal for him to have a gun will

OH WAIT-its illegal to take a gun to school

Honestly-the parents of the slain children should be given a full pardon by Governor Kasich, a couple sledgehammers and an hour with this mope. won't get their kids back but as they say if someone can not serve as a good role model for other people we might as well make a most horrible example out of them

Ya, I can feel that.

... which is why I am for public punishment. I don't think murderers should be given the decency of a windowless room.

You know, we don't really know much of anything at this point.

We don't know where he got the gun, or how, or from whom.

It does seem as if he may have TARGETED these boys specifically.... from reading I get the impression that he shot them specifically rather than just shooting at random. If that is so, one may ask..... why?

It might have been random. It might have been some BS feud. It is possible that the victims may turn out to be bullies who had been harassing him for years, too.

We don't know much at this point, as I said.

But don't let that stop anyone from making snap judgements based on assumptions, of course.

Goshin, there is no excuse for this. Is it better if it were a feud and he targeted certain kids?

I oppose state death penalties generally-murderers doing life who kill again are a clear exception However, while I don't like giving the state the power (as a wise current US district judge said to me-Some people ought to be fried but I don't like having a government that has the power to fry people) to kill criminals as punishment I certainly believe that the families of the innocent should have the right to have vengeance on particularly heinous murderers. Killing innocent school children qualifies in my book

We need less gun control in schools - it should be legal for every kid to take a gun to school - if we did this, then the random nutcases like this guy would think twice about pulling a gun on someone - especially since school security doesn't do anything other than just call the cops and wait for them to come.

I'm wondering what those guys did that made this boy decide murder was the only solution.

Sorry, but most kids that take guns to school and wind up killing other students, are victims of being bullied because parents are oblivious and teachers can't be bothered.

My pro gun credentials are legendary on this board but that is just PLAIN STUPID

Armed teachers and other responsible adults though is a good idea

Rumor has it that the school forgot to put up their "Gun Free Zone" signs that morning, thereby allowing him entry to the school.

Not enough traditional values in their lives - lots of kids today don't grow up with any traditional values or role models, so this leads them to acting out in violence.

I propose a mix of Muslim and French Revolution punishment. Gather everyone in the town square but instead of death by gulliotinetone stone them to death (or near death). I guarantee crime rate will drop dramatically really quickly.

true-which is why we don't want kids with that sort of background packing heat-they might decide to waste a teacher for a bad grade of a girl who laughs at their attempt to hit on her

Liberty University lets students have firearms on campus, and there's never been a shooting there. It'd be better than leaving all of the kids sitting ducks for some psycho to pick off knowing they're defenseless.

If it were my kid killed that would be way way too fast

You have a good point there. If nothing else, then security guards should definitely have guns. Maybe have the school supply kids with tazers?

I didn't say there was an excuse, as in "some reason to excuse his actions entirely."

I'm just saying that we don't know much of anything just now.

He might turn out to be just a royal bastard who wanted to off some kids for no reason.

He might be mentally ill.

It is also remotely possible that he targeted those boys specifically for something they did to him.

Now if so, I'm not saying that gets him entirely off the hook.... but if, for example, we were to find out later that he shot those boys because they had gang-raped him in the bathroom last week... dontcha think your attitude about the situation might change just a bit?

I'm just speculating, I dont know any such thing.... which is my point....

those are adults-21 years and older-ie older than the average M16 toting Pineapple throwing claymore mine setting Nam Infantry man. Older than my nephew was when he first was issued a M4 automatic carbine and given the authority to call in a 105 howitzer strike on occupied buildings

If they were adults, I would have no problem with it, but with kids, no way.

When I was a kid, it was perfectly normal to carry a long gun in your car to high school, because you might be going to a shooting event or hunting with your buddies after school, but nowadays, that's not the case.
