NYPD surveillance of students called 'disgusting'

NEW YORK (AP) -- At Columbia University and elsewhere, the fear that the New York Police Department might secretly be infiltrating Muslim students' lives has spread beyond them to others who find the reported tactics "disgusting," as one teenager put it.

The NYPD surveillance of Muslims on a dozen college campuses in the Northeast is a surprising and disappointing violation, students said Saturday in reaction to Associated Press reports that revealed the intelligence-gathering at Columbia and elsewhere

This should sicken every freedom loving American, Once again, a rogue city mayor is crossing borders and not only trampling of peoples rights, but putting the lives of his and out of state officers lives at risk. The man is a statist and a tyrant. and his constant violation other states sovereignty should have us all alarmed.

I was concise, accurate, succinct, condemning and to the point.

I have a libertarian on another thread that supports the police being able to peer into your bedroom window without you knowing about it.

Not surprising from a city that sees the constitution as something like this

I've said several times that there is nothing that is too stupid to happen in New York City. However, it seems that we are lately seeing evidence that the level of Thunderous stupidity there is becoming even greater than even New York City can completely contain, so the city government is branching outside its jurisdiction to try to spread its stupidity into other places. I guess this makes only two specific examples that I know of (the other being Bloomturd's attempt to “sting” gun sellers in Arizona), but I'd bet that there are plenty more.

LOL this has been happening since 9/11 and you only starting to complain about it now when there is a Democrat in the White House and he is up for re-election? Where were your complaints when the FBI was rounding up "muslim looking" men in New York after 9/11? Where were the complaints over DHS using the patriot act to snoop on you without a warrent? Oh yea most on the right were defending the actions because they were done under a GOP president... hypocrites.

The point, you missed it. This has nothing to do with obama, chief.

dude, what the **** is the problem? what the hell do I have do with the OP? are you going to make obsessive, compulsive, and totally unprovoked attacks against me in every thread you post in?

absolutely pathetic & sad.

I remember the outcries from many people when 9/11 happened "why did you see this coming, why didn't you stop this before it happened!"

And this is what happens when the usual approach to law enforcement doesn't prevent tragedy.

I think pressure from the public and a failure of the government to do it's job for sufficiently as far as intelligence goes has created this situation - if it is, in fact, happening like it's presented.

to defend the program, Ray Kelly claims that more than 40 suspected terrorists have been arrested, due to this program.

no mention of convictions, of course. maybe cause there were none?

Nice......

I only support that if they have the correct warrant. If these cops had the correct warrant, I am ok with it. If not.....heads should roll.

How are they suppose to catch the real bad guys if they have to show the real bad guys the warrant to do surveillance? Surveillance isn't the same as searching your house.

I think they should still start with reported activity, etc - not ust flat out monitoring and following just anybody based on racial or religious profiling though.

You do not have to show the warrant to conduct surveillance but you do have to obtain one. If the warrant was issue on a case of racial profiling.... It is invalid and illegal.

This story insinuates that the monitoring was based on the subjects religion alone. If true, that it very much illegal.

ah - got ya. thanks.

"He's brown....put a tail on him."

To say that profiling doesn't. or shouldn't happen...is kinda wrong, in my opinion. The sad fact of the matter is, profiling works. However, the issue we seem to be having is, cops can't figure out that just because you might SUSPECT a greater chance or percentage from a specific profile (be it racial, ethnic, or religious), does NOT grant them leave to treat said person as a suspect. That's too big of a leap, with nothing in between to support it.

I think New Yorkers are scared of their own shadows.

...I think New Yorkers are scared of their own shadows.

off the top of my head, I can list five terrorist attacks that have occured in NYC, and four more that failed or were foiled right before Zero Hour.

so yeah, we take terrorism seriously. You would too if 3,000 people from your area were snuffed out by radical nuts.

however, this NYPD program seems to label ALL Muslims, as terrorist-suspects. And that's not right.

I think it is one thing for federal law enforcement to engage in such things, but it needs to be with cause. NYC has NO STANDING outside of NYC and they need to stop infringing on other states citizens rights.

Bloomberg needs to be arrested.

Surveillance is fine, you want to cross state lines, you need to get the permission of the state you are invading.
