WWII Veteran Says Nobody Helped Him After He Was Carjacked | Fox News
A World War II veteran said nobody helped him in the minutes after he was attacked and carjacked during daylight at a busy Detroit gas station and he had to crawl across a concrete parking lot to get help. A roughly four-minute surveillance video shows 86-year-old Aaron Brantley struggling to get from the fuel pump to the gas station's door as people walked and drove by him Wednesday morning. The video was first obtained by the Detroit Free Press.
"I'm crawling and trying to get in the filing station. [People] just walking right by me and going on in the filling station there ... If I saw somebody crawling like that on the ground, I would have stopped myself," Brantley told myFOXdetroit.com

Brantley was unable to walk because his leg was broken in the attack. The carjacker knocked him down, took his keys and drove off in his car about 10:40 a.m.
"I was trying to go in ... and see if somebody could call the police and an ambulance because I couldn't stand. I had to crawl -- I tried two or three times to get up," Brantley said Saturday. He said he was on way home from Bible study when he stopped to put gas in his 2010 Chrysler 200, which he recently bought to replace another car that had been stolen.
Brantley said as he approached the building, he asked a woman to open the door for him. He said at first it appeared she wasn't going to but she did and then kept walking. He found it distressing that nobody helped him.
"Any time a person is crawling on the ground, you know something happened to them," Brantley said.

Wow - so twisted. What they hell were they thinking: he was just a worthless bum? And even then - why did no one give a damn?

No decency anymore.

It's Detroit, I'm not really surprised. I've heard of people having heart attacks in the street there, and being robbed while they're on the ground.

I don't think I'd stop in Detroit. I might call 911 from the inside of my locked car if I had a weapon with me, but without some sort of protection I'm not going to be a sitting duck. I know that sounds heartless, but a lot of Detroit is down right deadly these days.

Also, I don't know that I necessarily like the WWII vet angle. As if he was more deserving than somebody else, or that the offense is more atrocious because of his service. ANYBODY in that situation deserves help so long as it is safe to offer it. His being a vet is merely circumstantial.

I agree with that. But I have to wonder if this story would have received the light of day if this man was not a veteran. These people in my opinion are just as ****ed up as the guy who robbed and assaulted the man.

This is tragic. I do not think that it matters that ity happened in Detroit, depravity can happen anywhere.

The inaction of people in this case is referred to as the "bystander effect". There are a few theories on why it happens one is that people think someone else will respond and another is that people take cues from others and if no one else is helping then help is not needed.

This happens in all aspects of life. Think about that hallway lightbulb that has been out for a week in your apartment building, the person who left their headlights on, when the cable goes out. In these situations many people think -- "well someone else will take care of it".

What about when you know of a woman or child who is being abused? Do you do nothing because no one else is or because you just don't "want to get involved"? When is it time to intervene?

I'll be 69 in August and for the last few years I've noticed that people utterly disregard me or go out of their way to push by me. So, I would say that it's normal to be repulsed by aged people. Of course, you can't catch age from old people but there is kind of an innate prejudice.

America (I don't know about other countries) has always suffered from what I'll call The Genovese Syndrome (search for Kathy Genovese if that's not familiar to you). That's very frequent because we are all afraid of each other and we all dislike each other. Sure, all those who read this will say "no, not me, I would always stop and help" or "I believe in respecting elders" and I'm sure everyone on this board who reads this will be telling the truth, but most others will be lying to themselves.

Most people have fantasies of heroism but when push comes to shove, they don't respond that way. In a nation with 300 million guns and 300 million cell phones, you'd think crime would be obsolete. Unfortunately, we are a nation of self-centered ******s.

That's why I hang out here. None of you are like that and I'm sure any one of you would have assisted that old man. I also exempt our men in uniform who get shot at to defend corporate profits. It's the other ones I'm referring to......

I do not think its any so-called bystander effect. I think its just a bunch of degenerate scumbags having no regardless for anyone but themselves.

So stupid - people walking around at a gas station. . . questioning safety?

If you're *that* afraid - why are you even at a gas station? Get on a cellphone 'I think someone's been injured - he's crawling on the ground, send an ambulance to this location . . . "

Just call it like it is: no one gave a damn.
