Saudi Arabia says no to women Olympians

Oh they aren't backwards at all.. Sitting in the room talking with the Sudeiri Seven you are in the presence of 500 years of experience in good governance, careful planning and cautious reform.

Yeh, those ancient monarchists seemed pretty learned and refined in comparison to their "99%" too. Built some pretty sweet crap too, I mean look at those pyramids in Egypt for instance, evidence of a just society.

Most people know very little about Saudi Arabia, but there are thousands of Americans who have lived and worked there for 7 decades who love it..

Which means what exactly? You have cash and you can live well in any authoritarian dystopia.

Sounds like something the Republican party would say. I wonder how many women have a real voice on the Saudi Arabia Olympic Committee?

That's an odd remark..

I am frankly against imposing US values and culture on others against their will.

Do you agree with their decission to keep women out of the Olympics? btw the IOC international olympics comittee is not an entity of the the United States. It is an International organization which includes members from around the world including members of the Saudi royal family. They had said just a few months ago that they would allow Saudi women to participate in the games in London this year. They have chosen not to. They should not be allowed to participate until they are ready to allow women. Even Iran allowed women to participate in the 2008 games in Beijing. The Hermit Kingdom of North Korea, one of the most isolated countries in the world allowed women to participate. Their women won gold in weightlifting and gymnastics.

We'll see what happens..

No problem, there are many articles out there on different cases

SAUDI ARABIA Jeddah, gang-raped woman sentenced to prison, one hundred lashes - Asia News
Saudi Gazette - Girl gets a year in jail, 100 lashes for adultery

I was wrong the four men in the Qatif gang rape case were sentenced up to 10 years in prison. But the victim was also sentenced to prison and lashes.

I suggest you go to the following to research the atrocities commited against women by the legal systems of Saudi Arabia and other Islamic countries. I was mistaken the men involved were sentenced to

You don't understand the protocol for lashing... which is public shaming NOT a beating.

Further.. Human Rights Watch is lousy at following up on any story. Often as NOT some foreign national ... guest worker yells they are persecuted for being "Christians" when in fact, they were bootleggers.

100 Lashes is not a beating? 200 lashes is not a beating? It's just a public shaming? It's disgusting that you are attempting to downplay these actions. This is not how a civilized Country should treat their citizens. It's barbaric, cruel and inhuman and anyone with a basic respect for common decency and humanity should be able to see this.

The irony of it all is despite all the bad remarks about Saudi Arabia U.S. has a major base in Saudi to defend the country. Oil is paramount here and human rights can take a back seat.

The protocol is how it severely limits range of motion....

Would you say that 150 years ago, 300 years ago our Christian ancestors were cruel and barbaric?

Does a Saudi woman in Saudi Arabia have the right to date whomever she wishes? And if she chooses to date a man and is seen in public with him is she at risk? What if her father or brother disaproves of the man she is dating?

you do realize that this goes on both ways? that men can't date any women either? being seen in public with a stranger is a punishable offense for both of them...

Also sharon just because because you've never worn one doesn't mean everybody else didn't, in fact every time I saw a western woman in Saudi, at malls for instance, they would be wearing a black Abaya (no headscarves though), non Saudi women get away with it but some times the morality police would be a hassle (to foreign Arab women not sure if they bothered white ppl)..

Change that you YOUR Christian ancestors were cruel and barbaric and it's accurate, and if such as many Christian religious leaders could gain enough power they would be cruel and barbaric again.

It certainly is, but the Arab Supremacist with which you are engaged is not interested in decency or humanity -- only the defense of anything Arab.

Well. women couldn't divorce their husbands or have custody of their children... or buy and sell property without permission from their husbands..

Slaves could be beaten or separated from their families or have their achilles tendon slashed.

Muslim Fundamentalist women can participate in some sports in the summer olympics

1) fencing-the athlete is covered head to toe

2) Rifle shooting-leather jackets, pants and a hat and gloves

3) Dressage-trousers, jackets, gloves and a helmet

4) archery-while most competitors wear shorts or tennis style skirts- you can compete in a track suit

I saw a Muslim woman playing the Chinese world champion in table tennis. The chinese player was wearing a short singlet and short shorts. The woman from Egypt was wearing what appeared to be a hood, a long fairly tight full length jersey and warm up pants. She was thrashed. A woman from Tunisia was in the sprint heats with Jamaican girls. The Jamaican girls were wearing what could best be described as jog bras and bikini bottoms or a one piece speed suit sort of like a sleeveless leotard. The Tunisian athlete was wearing what appeared to be a skiing bodysuit with a hood. It was 90 degrees. the Jamaican girls were gushing sweat. The Tunisian woman looked miserable
