Obama in hot water over shark fin soup

There's a whole "boy who cried wolf" aspect that many advocate organizations, especially animal rights organizations, can't seem to grasp.

Yeah, because the slaughter of dozens of millions of sharks each year for their fins is something that we should just turn away form.

I support animal shelters and anti-cruelty campaigns, but I just cannot be on board with an organization like PETA. They take it too far to be credible. Besides, I found out that they euthanized animals rather than adopting them.

I don't think that's what he was saying. I think he meant more, pick your battles (I'm sure he'll correct me if I'm wrong). Activism can be a great thing, but criticizing the president for just being in the proximity of fin soup hurts the credibility of the movement.

I agree with the sane majority on this thread.

First, I have never and would never eat shark fin soup for all the reasons already expressed. I do not eat animal parts that were removed from a live animal, which is then left to suffer an agonizing death.

Second, it's utterly stupid for the environmental group to use something Obama didn't do as a means to trash him.

Third, unless we end up with some cool recipes that use legally-produced and harvested seafood, I've just wasted five minutes of my life that I'll never get back.

Bingo!!!!!!!!

Only in this country can a news article followed by a 9-page discussion on said news article be about a bowl of soup that a guy didn't eat.

I totally agree. I have not joined in the criticism of the President on this and PETA does take things way too far. However, finning is a horrible practice that has to be stopped.
