Interracial marriage in US hits new high: 1 in 12

WASHINGTON — Interracial marriages in the U.S. have climbed to 4.8 million — a record 1 in 12 — as a steady flow of new Asian and Hispanic immigrants expands the pool of prospective spouses. Blacks are now substantially more likely than before to marry whites.

A Pew Research Center study, released Thursday, details a diversifying America where interracial unions and the mixed-race children they produce are challenging typical notions of race.

"The rise in interracial marriage indicates that race relations have improved over the past quarter century," said Daniel Lichter, a sociology professor at Cornell University. "Mixed-race children have blurred America's color line. They often interact with others on either side of the racial divide and frequently serve as brokers between friends and family members of different racial backgrounds," he said. "But America still has a long way to go."

The figures come from previous censuses as well as the 2008-2010 American Community Survey, which surveys 3 million households annually. The figures for "white" refer to those whites who are not of Hispanic ethnicity. For purposes of defining interracial marriages, Hispanic is counted as a race by many in the demographic field.

Miscegenation is a tough issue, but it just reinforces why freedom of association is so important.

"But America still has a long way to go."

What?

Look. Love has an emotional element to it, and maybe someone just doesn't feel attracted to people who look different or come from a different background.

Put simply, having an emotional racial preference does not make someone a racist, nor are people obligated to justify their racial feelings to others anymore than why they like strawberry ice cream.

OK, the article is clearly trying to spur fearmongering. MSNBC loves to do this with its Rockefeller Republican/civic nationalist persona.

300million/6 = 50 million Hispanics.

In 2008, We had about 11 million illegal immigrants of which 81% (8.91m) are Hispanic.

That means 17.8% of Hispanics are illegal.

Look. I won't deny that illegal immigration is a problem, but the goal of this article is to obviously make people panic and fall for being called racists.

Upholding due process would fix all of this. This is especially important for the working class which doesn't need "liberals" hiding behind multiculturalism to break down the labor market.

Obviously, marriage and the labor market are connected in how children with stable parents can compete better and have a better shot at social mobility.

It's no surprise, then, that "liberals" have been suggesting a breakdown of the traditional family unit is OK as well. They DON'T WANT social mobility. They're elitists who want to preserve their social status while others envy, and scrounge to become, them.

I really didn't read it as fearmongering..

Doesn't surprise me.

I'm pretty colorblind (racially speaking) and most of my relationships over the last few years have been interracial.

I imagine if and when I marry someone it'll likely be an interracial marriage.

I see this as the foreshadowing of the gay marriage issue.

Each successive generation of people becomes more open to accepting things which previous generations once spurned.

Of course it also provides evidence that racism is in fact an issue within the black community, and not just against the black community.

All in all it's a good sign of things to come. Diversity and acceptance.

Good! Great news!

But I'll note that just because someone isn't attracted to someone of a different race doesn't mean they're racist.

But people who would see this as a negative development in our country = blatant racist which I have zero tolerance for.

The reader can interpret anything they want, inject meaning and obfuscate the message. The following is is what the article states, the interpretation is in the mind of the beholder.

"In the past century, intermarriage has evolved from being illegal, to be a taboo and then to be merely unusual. And with each passing year, it becomes less unusual," said Paul Taylor, director of Pew's Social & Demographic Trends project. "That says a lot about the state of race relations. Behaviors have changed and attitudes have changed."

It is not surprising that interracial marriage has risen. I beleive it is rare to find a "purebred" race and people are just being more honest in their responses. The US has been a "melting pot" for generations therefore interracial marriages are inevitable and more accepted as time goes on.

We are all Africans.

I mean...it's good...very, very good that we're moving further and further away from intolerance, ignorance, and hate. But I think the fact that we have to have articles talking about how far we've come kind of defeats the purpose of making the journey. Acknowledging it over all is fine, documenting it for history, whatever...but...Am I glad we're able to be more open and diverse and accepting? Hell yeah. But I look forward to a time when we don't have to parade around every single change in tolerance because it's just natural to be tolerant of no-harm-done type scenarios. I long for the day when as a society we don't have to parade around little accomplishments in achieving equality because we're already at 99%, you know?

I do not use wiki as it is a crappy and unreliable source.

Further, for the purposes of the material in the OP...."In this report, the terms “intermarriage” and “marrying out” refer to marriages between a Hispanic and a non-Hispanic (interethnic) or marriages between non-Hispanic spouses who come from the following different racial groups (interracial): white, black, Asian, American Indian, mixed race or some other race. “Intra-marriage” and “marrying in” refer to marriages between spouses of the same race or ethnicity...“White/Asian” indicates intermarried couples between whites and Asians. “White-Asian” means that the husband is white and the wife is Asian, in that order...The term “Asian” includes native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders. “American Indian” includes Alaska Natives. The terms “black” and “African American” are used interchangeably in this report. All references in this report to whites, blacks, and Asians refer to the non-Hispanic portions of those groups. Hispanics are of any race."

Moreover, I am not going to entertain extraneous theories or arguments that can be good topic for new thread, especially when they either detract or simply do not address the OP in this thread.

No argument that wiki is not the perfect source, but would you deny that as far as science is concerned (at this point in time), the origin of modern man is in fact Africa?

Like I said.......

Intermixing is the ultimate cure for racism.

This may be off topic but I've noticed a shift in the media, magazines, and movies as well. I remember when I was little anytime you saw an add, models walking the runway, poster boards, and the like..... they were always caucasions... especially blondes. Now you walk into any grocery store/department store and you see an ad with a black woman who has kinky hair representing whatever the add is for, or you'll see a woman of mixed ethncity. It's nice to see all cultures represented. Commercials are also more ''ethnic''. In some ways the change is subliminal.

Count me among them. 18 years and counting to my beautiful Latina wife.

The problem is not who we're marrying, but actually staying married to them, and not procreating until we actually get married.

please clarify your claims that the article is trying to spur fear mongering. and thanks for crapping on this thread with that nonsense.

Nobody said having a racial preference was racist. Jesus H. Christ. Nobody even TANGENTIALLY touched on immigration issues either.

And please substantiate your claim that liberals support a breakdown of the family unit.
