Cincinnati High School Paying Students To Come To School « CBS Cleveland

The school’s CEO Ken Furrier told CBS Cleveland that students will get Visa gift cards for showing up everyday for school, being on time for class and not getting into trouble. Seniors would get $25 while underclassmen would get $10.
The school would also put $5 into a savings account for the student that earns a gift card.

Ah, yes, parenting and education in 2012.

Of course, if evil rich white men would let these kids go to school in the first place, there'd be no problem.

I do not think kids should receive cash from tax payers for doing something that they should already be doing.I think it will create some sort of idea that people are supposed to pay you to do things you are already supposed to be doing. It amounts to giving people for not speeding,or giving people money because they paid their bills.

Yep.

My motivation was, if I didn't go to school and perform, my dad would have my ass, and my mom would take away every ounce of limited freedom I had. That, and they managed to install enough personal pride and desire to succeed that I took my future into my own hands.

And no, we weren't wealthy by any stretch.

i disagree
we all respond to incentives (or disincentives)
don't think they went far enough
the school system should also financially reward students who perform well in school (and who do not create discipline problems)
any student who does not attend regularly or whose GPA is less than a 2.0 should have their drivers license suspended until those problems are cured
any family of such a student, which family receives any form of government assistance, should have to endure oodles of red tape to continue to receive their benefits. that might motivate mom/dad to more closely monitor their child's academic career

“Our student population is 90 percent poverty,” Furrier told CBS Cleveland.

You can make 10K in a few hours selling drugs on the street or you can go to school and work your ass off to go college, amass student loan debt, and then end up on food stamps because you can't get a job.

It's funny, all the "capitalists" on this forum, and not a single one of them understands incentive or what kinds of incentives the kids living in poverty experience in this day and age.

I hated high school and often did have the thought that they should pay me to be there, since it was costing me employment hours.

Kind of like the incentive of people becoming a productive member of society, having your freedoms, and living a long life, as opposed to being a blight on society, a person your parents are ashamed of, ruining the lives of other people for your own greed, and rotting in prison or being gunned down in the street?

You actually think schools should pay students for showing up for a free education? And for acting like decent human beings?

This is the kind of thing I did to train my dog.

A productive member of society? You mean like the CEOs, bankers, and Wall Street brokers who steal millions and then get the government to bail them out for millions more? Do you mean the people who work and save their entire life and then lose everything because they end up with an illness and they are underinsured? How about all those hard working and productive people in the last few years who watched their 401Ks disappear and ended up under water on their mortgage?

I'm sorry, but I don't think you can feed that bull crap, fantasy American dream stuff to kids living in poverty in this day and age when they have witnessed the corruption of the last decade. They are as you wanted them to be. They are materialistic consumers, who think greed is good, and will innovate whatever way they can to make quick cash rather than waste their lives toiling under the plow just to have the fruits of their labor stripped from them by a celebrated rich crook who will never face repercussions.

Twist it up however you'd like. If these kids are becoming criminals then they deserve what they get. They will be killed or end up in prison. And that hard and fast lifestyle wont seem so great. Just because some company execs are corrupt doesnt excuse other peoples criminal activities. That is a sad excuse.

Sure, everyone living on that side of town is a selfish, evil crook. Please, this gets old.

No, they outworked the other side of town by a million-fold. They make HUGE sacrifices through school and beyond to get where they are. They work long hours, just like they did in high school and college, to get ahead. They spend off hours reading and attending workshops to build themselves for their next pursuit. They're driven.

Stop with the class warfare crap. By and large, people are EXACTLY where they're supposed to be, based on what they've earned. There are always exceptions, but they are just that...exceptions.

This is what you get when you have charter schools, which this school is.

That is the best part. You make it so that the only way for most of these kids to get out of poverty is to become criminals. Reduce social mobility more and more every single year, stagnate wages, cut programs and opportunities, and then you wonder why there is so much moral decay. The new American way. It's okay to steal, but only if you are wealthy and can get away with it.

This "self made man" fantasy is the biggest load of bullcrap and no one buys it anymore except for old stupid farts. It is statistically proven that wealth has more to do with chance than with work. It is no coincidence that Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were born the same damn year!

How are they getting out of poverty? Does going to prison count as getting out of poverty?

Actually yes, that is a coincidence.

I've worked with clients with a 9th grade education who made more in a day selling drugs than I could earn in a year with my Masters degree. You would be surprised how few actually go to prison, and even those who do tend to find prison a lot more accommodating than the mean streets of their home towns.

Schools pay you in education. You are there for your benefit not theirs.

not exactly
look at the most progressive cultures in the world and you will also see educated people

examine the more retarded cultures of the world and you will normally see an uneducated population

our choice. pay them now to do well in school, so they can help elevate our society, or pay the cost of incarceration, expanded police, judiciary and welfare system later

Actually yes, that is a coincidence.

No it isn't. Actually educate yourself. Go read Malcolm Gladwell's "Outliers" and learn why your delusion of the "self made man" is laughable. Hell, if you go read that book, I'll read any book you want me to read.

yea because there are millions of millionaire drug dealers who have been successful for a lifetime. (eyes rolling) That idea that all the street corner drug dealers are banking 70-80,000 a day is just dumb. Most of these kids might make a couple hundred a day. Which might go on for a couple years before they start getting busted. Stop fooling yourself and glorifying a disgusting lifestyle.

I dont care what you read. There were millions born that year, because 2 were that successful means nothing. It is a coincidence.

Actually, most drug dealers make less than they would working at Wendys. You have to have good connections, smarts, and a lot of ambition to make a thousands in a day.

I understand your point. However if prisons and welfare weren't so appealing then you wouldn't need to entice children to better themselves.
