Washington state approves gay marriage

I've actually been trying to decide between moving to New Hampshire or Washington. However this turns out will probably decide where I move.

Well the oddsmakers here in Washington say the referendum in November will be approved by a huge margin so I would wait until we see what happens if I were you.

"According to a University of Washington poll of state voters last October, 44 percent said they support the right to marry for gay men and lesbians, but 55 percent said that if such a law was already on the books they would not vote to overturn it."

I was referring to states like New York, which have enacted laws allowing gay marriage.

I would not be surprised if NY organizes a referendum to for the Nov ballot

Your problem is most don't vote, they just talk.............all the talking heads hear in the state say it will pass easily...........

Good, I'm glad Washington state passed SSM. I'm happy every time a state comes out against the legalized discrimination of a minority group. That's a good thing, people! It's a "constitutional" good thing. :)

Incidental question: Do you think personal liberties should be decided by popular vote? Generally speaking I mean.

If done legally I think the vote of the people should be what counts........If that was not the case, why have a republic, a democracy, if you don't like how we settle things in this country move to Cuba.

Oh and gays have the same right I do. They want a special right........give it to them and you have to give it to every other class of people.........

What makes "gays" a different class of people? I don't expect you to answer that with any ounce of honesty.

You do not have a republic with mob rule. You have a democracy with mob rule. With a republic the minority voice is heard. With a democracy the minority voice is drowned out by the mob.

People at one time voted to deny inter-racial marriages. They also voted to keep blacks segregated from whites. They also voted to keep blacks as slaves. And it was ALL done legally.

And no gays do not have the same right as you. You have the right to marry the person that you love if they consent to the marriage. Gays do not have that right currently. Your arguement would only be valid if we still allowed forced marriages where loving someone was never taken into consideration.

Saw this today and thought I would post it instead of writing my usual rebuttals. :)

When do we get to vote on your marriage Navy?

Should inter-racial marriage be allowed to be put to a vote? Should we be allowed to pass a law that says that people who have committed adultry should not be allowed to marry?

Why do we elect legislators to make laws, shouldn't we just put it to a popular vote for everything?

I'm sure on the right-wing propoganda that you listen to.....they probably do. That's the problem when you don't live in the real world.

Ahh yes, the special right argument.

What special right is that? Which right are gays asking for that you do not possess?

And, as others have asked, how come I haven't gotten to vote on your marriage?

Do you know the difference between "there", "their" and "they're" by chance?

No?

I didn't think so. But thank you for showing that a third grader has a better education than the average gay rights opponent.
