ATLANTA (AP) -- A high-ranking official resigned Tuesday from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast-cancer charity after a dispute over whether the group should give funding to Planned Parenthood, according to a letter obtained by The Associated Press.

Karen Handel, the charity's vice president for public policy, told Komen officials that she supported the move to cut off funding for Planned Parenthood. She said the discussion started before she arrived at the organization and was approved at the highest levels of the charity.

Handel was the one responsible for the Komen Foundation's attempt to cut out the funding to Planned Parenthood, a decision which was reversed days later.

Guess who Handel is? A rabid anti-abortionist, a former Republican candidate for the governorship of Georgia, and someone who had stated in the past that she had a mission to shut down Planned Parenthood. Handel is the smoking gun which shows that Komen's decision to defund Planned Parenthood was politically motivated.

With Handel gone, Komen can now focus on rebuilding its reputation, which now lies in tatters.

Beaten to death but I dont know why the organization doesnt work more with hospitals themselves. After all, Hospitals organize tons of events for charitables exactly like Komen.

Wouldnt they be a good deal less controversial as well?

Yeah, the reputation of a organization that has done a metric ton to help fight breast cancer isn't "torn to shatters" in my eyes at least because they chose not to give funds to one place regardless of the reason. If it was done simply for political reasons, yeah...that sucks. But its like 5 points of suck compared to 500 points of "Wow they're great".

People deriding and going after such a good charity based on something so trivial as this and because of their own partisan political leanings are the people whose reputations are "in tatters" in my eyes. Though, for SOME of those people, their reputation has long been in tatters with me.

Yes, it was all politically motivated and the outrage at Komen was pure and good like snow. No politics in the "backlash".

I don't know why you say this was politically motivated. Everything in the world isn't politically motivated, Dan. If she was behind it, why can it not simply be that she is anti-abortion? Or are we not entitled to have strong opinions?

What is ironic in all of this is I heard that they got a nice boost in donations right after they decided to not give funds to Planned Parenthood.

Just sayin'.

Good riddance to a right wing reactionary who decided to play politics with womens' health.

Things that can actually raise significant money to sponsor breast cancer research and heavily promote public education about it - Pink Water Bottles, Pink Phone Cases, Pink T-Shirts, Pink Spatulas

Things that generally don't raise a dime on their own for breast cancer research or educating the public about breast cancer - Doctors at Planned Parenthood

Problem with idiotic political cartoons posted up by people who are easily as politically biased, if not more so (Gotta love anyone who designates a women's group that disagrees with them as not "REAL" pro-women), than those who are being slammed at Komen is that while they bitch and moan about people getting "Facts" wrong they go forth with a strawman such as suggesting the issue at hand, or the singular purpose of Komen, is "screening" for breast cancer.

This is what happens when good-intentioned organizations don't screen the people calling the shots, and hire rabid idealogs to be the public face of their organization.

Good riddance to a right wing reactionary who decided to play politics with womens' health.

And all those who were boycotting, condemning, and dragging the largest breast cancer charity in the U.S. obviously were reacting in no way based on their political views on the issue....

For ****s Sakes, the sanctimonious hypocrisy going on in this case just makes me shake my head
