Obama to announce Veterans Job Corps

So...the government will tax everyone another billion a year (every year) to add 20,000 new jobs for vets that the government couldnt afford previously in an election year effort to boost popularity. At 50,000 a year per job, we could employ EVERYONE. And all we have to do is dump the debt from those programs on future generations.

The lid is off the jar, baby...its election time! Yes!!!

Nah...

They won't tax anyone (except the rich, if they can). They'll just increase the debt.

I think this program is for the very serious cases or incidents of veterans that are unable to find work. I saw a segment on 60 Minutes about homeless veterans. Extreme PTSD is something I am very ignorant about, but as I understand it, the homeless veterans can only function on a military base. Assimilating to civilian life is increasingly more difficult, and not to mention the emotions that are tacked on when you aren't working.

These men and women had bullets flown at them, seen their brothers and sisters blown apart, and heard men and women scream and agony. Yeah they are trained for it, and yes they prepare for it, but everyone's experiences are different.

This is what I am talking about. We bitch and complain about how much money we are spending on veterans!? Are you guys human? Some of you guys are the most selfish bastards I have ever witnessed. These people deserve our help.

No, you misunderstand my complaint. $1 Million on the vets and $900 Million on government workers to "adminster" the program is nuts.

If you've noticed, a lot of us here ARE veterans. As I stated in my previous post, the Army's budget has increased 5 fold in the past 10 years. More money is not the solution to this.
A program with veterans working together in an environment where they are not witnessing death and dodging bullets might be a good thing for those who need help assimilating back into civilian life. Veteran halfway houses have proven to be helpful to vets with PTSD - this program might provide similar community dynamics.

BTW, I agree that $1B for 20,000 jobs is too much.

And some of us have 'been there', done that, and work with vets daily. No one is suggesting there shouldnt be adequate support for vets. Is that REALLY what you are reading? I ask again...why just 20,00 vets? Why not promise jobs to ALL vets for the rest of their lives? And who is going to pay for it? Would you SERIOUSLY be behind this proposal if it was offered by a republican president? Hey...dont get me wrong...LOVE the newfound respect for veterans and vet affairs.

"Already, the Obama Administration has helped 600,000 veterans and their family members go back to school on the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill and hired more than 120,000 veterans to serve in the federal government. First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden have worked with the private sector to secure a pledge from businesses to hire 135,000. And President Obama worked with Congress last fall to pass two new tax credits for companies that put veterans to work."

wow. he really claimed credit for this?

wow.

what percentage of "veterans" do you think spent time "witnessing death and dodging bullets"?.

other posters have this right. this is feel-good-election-year-abuse-of-the-military-BS from a president who cares far more about his political career than the troops.

and the fact that a disproportionate percentage of the federal workforce are veterans. yeesh.

So a few things on this...

1. Are the 20,000 Jobs that these veterans going to be filling things that are actually needed to be done? Or are we essentially "Creating" work for them to be able to "Create" a position that they'd then fill?

2. If the above question is answered "no, they're not really needed", are we just essentially extending the amount of time that we're paying Veterans for serving the U.S. we're just doing so in a way that isn't placing them in the potential way of harm?

Veterans already get a preferenace when applying for Federal Jobs, allowing Veterans to bypass equally or even more qualified applicants on certification lists for job openings (not saying that's a bad thing, just stating). I don't see a lot of point in manufacturing 20,000 busy work jobs, on tax payer dollars, simply to create a place where Veterans can continue to be paid for a bit after they get out of the serivce. I understand the desire and need to help Veterans, but unless these 20,000 jobs are ones that are actually needed and necessary, it seems that this is simply fixing one problem (potential veterans out of work) by creating more problems (creation of government jobs without much of a purpose which tend to be hard to get rid of; increasing the amount we're spending on the federal beuracracy).

i agree, i would like to know specifics on the types of jobs. i also don't really understand why so many veterans are out of work, given the preferences you described.

Do you think he is incorrect in his assertions or his State of the Union Address?
