Re: Top Komen official resigns in protest over grants cuts

Koman likes boobs.

They should stick to that strategy.

I hadn't seen this yet. Very good news!

The decision to stop funding under a rule that was applied only to Planned Parenthood, was a firestorm of their own making. They fund cancer research at Penn State, which is also under investigation, but did not cancel their funding. Kind of undermined the whole rule thing.

Big dummies. The motivation was transparent. The new VP of Public Policy is anti-Planned Parenthood and though they protested she had nothing to do with it, the resignations of top people speak against that assertion.

Re: Top Komen official resigns in protest over grants cuts

So the moral of the story is: Once you donate to Planned Parenthood, you are not allowed the stop.

Sounds like the mob.

Discontinuing is fine. Non-profits have the right pick and choose and change their minds. Just don't manufacture a false reason, as they did.

What people aren't saying is that abortion itself is a cause of breast cancer. :doh

Debunked:
From the website of the National Cancer Institute:

"In February 2003, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) convened a workshop of over 100 of the world’s leading experts who study pregnancy and breast cancer risk. Workshop participants reviewed existing population-based, clinical, and animal studies on the relationship between pregnancy and breast cancer risk, including studies of induced and spontaneous abortions. They concluded that having an abortion or miscarriage does not increase a woman’s subsequent risk of developing breast cancer."

A summary of the findings can be found in the Summary Report: Early Reproductive Events and Breast Cancer Workshop.

Appears there is some confusion because as of 5/10/11, these were their findings this information is still on their website.

Is abortion linked to breast cancer risk?

A few retrospective (case-control) studies reported in the mid-1990s suggested that induced abortion (the deliberate ending of a pregnancy) was associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. However, these studies had important design limitations that could have affected the results. A key limitation was their reliance on self-reporting of medical history information by the study participants, which can introduce bias. Prospective studies, which are more rigorous in design and unaffected by such bias, have consistently shown no association between induced abortion and breast cancer risk (18–23). Moreover, in 2009, the Committee on Gynecologic Practice of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists concluded that “more rigorous recent studies demonstrate no causal relationship between induced abortion and a subsequent increase in breast cancer risk” (24). Major findings from these recent studies include the following:

Women who have had an induced abortion have the same risk of breast cancer as other women.

Women who have had a spontaneous abortion (miscarriage) have the same risk of breast cancer as other women.

Cancers other than breast cancer also appear to be unrelated to a history of induced or spontaneous abortion.

I'll counter Amigo's posting of material from a right-to-life blog with the National Cancer Institute's factsheet on connection between reproductive history and breast cancer. This cites the many studies that have debunked the single study highlighted in the right-to-life blog article........Abortion, Miscarriage, and Breast Cancer Risk - National Cancer Institute
