Leaving Afganistan

I just heard on CBS news, the Obama administration, says we will likely be leaving Afganistan
by the end of next year (mid 2013, combat to train & assist role). All forces out in 2014. The administration says this is not a politically motivated action, but something they are working out with NATO.

Since a trillion dollars and thousands of lives have been lost in unsuccessful attempts to liquidate them, what is the alternative to talking to them?
 
Long overdue. We've taken out bin Laden and most of AQ's leadership. That's what we were there for.
 
Well, they are going to talk to them. They were there and will be there anyway, so
I hope anything they agree on, they do actually honor. We'll see.

We've killed the AQ second in command at least 5 times. I know he's sick of it and will be happy to see us go.

So what is your solution? Throw in a million US troops to pacify the population and bring them out of the 15th century? This would cost trillions and take decades... good luck on that!
 
No one has ever conquered Afganistan. Many have tried. Alexander the Great, the English, the Russians, probably a few more.

You're right. We should just throw our hands up, leave, let the Islamists takeover again and start hatching the next plot to threaten the United States, so we can just go right back and start all over from scratch, in ten years. The next generation needs to have there war, too.

The Russians were well on their way, before the United States stopped them.

The Islamists hadn't already taking over? I seem to forget a time that Afghanistan used to be anything but Islamic.

Oh well, no matter what Obama does, the republicans will complain. They'll probably call it "cut and run." Oh, right, most don't like the $ spent there. Um, who put us there? We got BL, but he was actually in Pakistan.

Yeah, I really wanted another Mid East notch in our belt. It would have looked cool when we were bragging to the rest of the world.

That's neither here, nor there; however, if not for American intervention, the Soviets would have conquered Afghanistan. The Mujas were losing bad, until we decided to become more involved.
