Drug testing for welfare recipients suffers setback

No parent would have a problem choosing between pissing in a cup and letting their children go hunger

I think they would do it I think they would have a problem with it and it think its petty and vindictive to make them.

I don't. Don't need it either. But you're not arguing for everyone. You're arguing one select group, and not even everyone who takes tax dollars.

Good point, educators should absolutely be tested.

Well, hell, let's just have everyone tested always. Government is the answer after all. never knew you were such a fan of big government. I bet there are other things we can check for as well. Make sure there's not too fat in the diet? Sugar will have to be monitored as well. And we sure can't have smoking or booze either. And let's make sure all the readning and viewing material is appropriate. No sleeping past 6 am either. We all know the early bird gets the worm. And since you want this can opened, might as well go big or go home.

I can't believe another state is going down this road after the humiliation of the Florida governor when it turned out that a much smaller percentage of welfare recipients are on drugs than in the population as a whole. His bigotry turned out to be totally misplaced. Why would more politicians want to throw themselves down that well?
I don't think its bigotry. I really don't. I think its holding people accountable when they want benefits. Also, its been said already. Its very easy to pass a piss test when you know its coming. I have to take a surprise piss test every couple of weeks in the military. Why can't a poor person take one every few months so they can receive their benefits? Politicians too.

Is it still a surprise? :2razz:

Lol, surprise as in the day we take it. Good one.:applaud
I served in the early & mid 80s. I think I had only one piss test that truly was a surprise, when I was stationed at Fr Bragg. When I was in Germany we had several piss tests, but only if another event triggered it. If anybody on the base got busted for something drug-related, you just knew that the whole base would get a "surprise" piss test within 3-5 days. You could almost set your watch by it.

Well, now that the gov't is cutting military, they're looking for a reason to get rid of guys. Piss test is the easiest and first way they do it.

If the amendment passed - why did he withdraw it? After a vote that shouldn't be allowed and a bill should be tied into the system once it's been addressed as such.

If my Husband and all others in the military must pass drug tests all the time - so should lawmakers and I'm a smidge bit surprised that they don't

My husband administers military tests often - he knows the tricks and is present in the restroom for those in

suspicion.
He should consider working for the t s a.

So the "Gents" will go across the street to withdraw cash at a nearby atm.

Exactly.
The problem is cash. Welfare recipients should not be paid in cash. Give them food, clothing, a place to live, and a chance to earn a better life. Once they're earning their own cash, then they can spend it in a strip club if they want.

So how many welfare recipients withdrew cash at strip clubs that makes this a real problem?

We could copy Brazil:

The program attempts to both reduce short-term poverty by direct cash transfers and fight long-term poverty by increasing human capital among the poor through conditional cash transfers. It also works to give free education to children who cannot afford to go to school to show the importance of education. [1]

House Set to Ban Welfare Payments at Strip Clubs - US News and World Report

See here's an example of abuse, just like the recipients using their benefits to purchase illegal drugs. This is bull**** that shouldn't be happening. The detractors always have excuses (more the exception than the rule) to justify not correcting things like this.
Since when does spending money on a legal activity qualify as "abuse"?

Though I will say that the rhetoric about stigmatizing and humiliating people is unnecessary hyperbole.

Better yet, why not just pay people a living wage for working full time and reduce the need for welfare altogether?

Even the very poor deserve to rub their face in some titties from time to time. I mean come on people, how inhumane can you be?

Want to know what would be better than drug testing welfare recipients? Requiring them to get GEDs if they are high school dropouts, or vocational training if they finished high school. This makes orders of magnitude more sense, since we would be preparing them to have a decent chance of getting off welfare. Perhaps, some of those Indiana lawmakers should go back to school themselves, since they seem to be dumber than a bag of hammers.

You mean make them get jobs?

Most have jobs now, they are just not paid enough to live on. From a taxpayers point of view, a living wage for full time work seems much preferable to tax payer supported welfare.

Of course it would be preferable. But is it realistic? It's also like a dog chasing its tail.

I would have no issue with tying some kind of real educational improvement to welfare money.

All the degrees and diplomas in the world won't help them if they can't pass a drug test. Almost every employer piss tests people these days.

I love the idea of having the able bodied people on welfare have to earn their money. They should be making every effort to get off of welfare. Staying off drugs, getting an education and or training is certainly a great idea.
