Bruins MVP Tim Thomas skips Obama White House event

Thomas is quoted as saying:

This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country.

Based on that I have to assume he would not have gone regardless of who the president was and regardless of whether the president was Republican or Democrat.

So it's not a slap in Obama's face by any means.

I think Thomas made a interesting choice and I can't fault him one bit for that.
I can fault him for being a Glenn Beck fan though......:thumbdown

I don't care much for Obama but I would go. I can't really speak on the actions of others here.

Yep. It's called having PRINCIPLES, and for the small percentage of us here in the United States who still live by them, it can be very inconvenient at times. We just understand that when you lay down in a cesspool you can't come away smelling like roses. It's just basic common sense, reason, and logic.

Racism is a principle and hatred can be based on principle

IOW, ranting about PRINCIPLES is just self-serving blather. Every tyrant throughout history has ranted about PRINCIPLES

Dan Hampton declined. I still think they should rename the Dan Ryan Expressway the Dan Hampton Expressway.

It would of been nice for the team and the fans too see the whole team their but whatever if he wants to spit his dummy out then thats fine. I would of gone personally because its an honour to be invited to the white house and you dont get many chances to go and visit like that!

Its Tim Thomas way of protesting what our president is doing to our country. I don't wanna here a damn thing about disrespecting the office of the presidency from people who disrespected president bush on a daily basis.

Above is an example of what I was talking about.

That much hatred and vitriol can only come from a deeper place.

Did you and your ilk express hatred and vitriol towards President Bush? Put the rocks down glass house dweller.

This has nothing to do with "supporting his team." He holds deep ideological and political differences with the President. He has the right to not participate in the event. It has jack to do with bailing out on his team.

People choose to protest in different ways. Me, I have three flags flying in front of my house, the American flag, the Canadian flag, and the Israeli flag. I belong to my local chapter of the Tea Party, and I have written congress on numerous occassions about my dissatisfaction. Thomas is a patriot just like the OWS folks were before thy got coopted by the dingies of our society.. :)

Tim-

Exactly! This guy's just a Danimal wannabe.

And that one really was a slap in Obama's face because Obama is a Bears fan (The only thing I firmly agree with Obama on is sports teams). I'd be devastated if I was president and the best player from the '85 Bears didn't want to meet me.

Bruins MVP Tim Thomas skips Obama White House event; why he shouldn

Man talk about a slap in the face to the President. I mean don't get me wrong, Thomas has to right to express his opinion and all but his hate for the President is that high that he wouldn't support his team on a very traditional event. They mention in the article that some Nascar drivers refuse to meet the president (which doesn't surprise me considering most drivers are deep rooted southerners).

He was busy.

Democratic Operative's Cat Slaughtered, 'Liberal' Painted On Corpse

Some people just don't get how elections work. If you respect our country and our constitution, then you must respect and abide by the outcome of an election, especially our most important one. You can disagree with policy, but disrespect the office and why do you call yourself American?

NASCAR's not a real sport anyway.

I am sure Hazlnut, you can link to your outrage over those who refused to attend events under Bush, such as Manny Ramirez. My guess is you supported that.... then.

No one is questioning how great of a player he is. It is his unwillingness to go meet the President at a non political event that is remarkable. Hate the man's policies but don't be disrespectful to the office. Can you imagine if Kobe refuse to meet with Bush after they won the title?

Several athletes refused to meet with Bush.

I'm pretty sure Manny just couldn't find his way there.

yeah, and I'm about as interested in Tim Thomas's politics as I am about Obama's slap shot. :doh

Oh please.. Now that would be something worth seeing. Black men can jump but for some unknown reason they don't play hockey very well. :)

Jarome Iginla comes to mind. The offset of blacks in Ice Hockey has more to do with logistics and geography than skating ability.

Yeah, there have been quite a few black players in the league. Ray Emery has done a solid job as the backup Goaltender.

It's not. He's protesting government, in general.
