Tea Party may get rebuffed in tax cut showdown

(Reuters) - House Speaker John Boehner, hoping to spare fellow Republicans a second embarrassing defeat over payroll tax cuts, is prepared to navigate around rebellious Tea Party-aligned lawmakers to get a deal, according to congressional aides.

That's right. Boehner is going to cut the Tea Party out of the negotiations. Here is the deal. Republicans only control one house, and they don't control the Presidency. Of course, there is the possibility that they will control the Presidency this year, but for now, they are the MINORITY party, and they are going to have to reach across the aisle. I am glad that Boehner recognizes this, and in so doing, the chances are very good that the GOP won't look like the idiots they looked like late last year when the first compromise was finally reached.

You're talking about two different things. Prior to the senate passing their 2 month extension, the House passed a bill that was a year long AND Boehner agreed that he would back the 2 month plan if that's what the senate settled on. The year long bill, however, was a total joke. They knew for a fact it could never actually be made into law. Obama told them that he would veto it and Reid said he would never introduce it in the senate. For obvious reasons- it had tons and tons of totally unrelated right wing stuff that they knew the Democrats couldn't sign off on. For example, it partially dismantled Obamacare, a freaking five year long salary freeze on federal employees, lots of stuff. Pages and pages of stuff like that. Stuff specifically picked because they knew no Democrat would ever agree to it. It was designed to allow them to say that they voted for the extension without actually having to face the possibility that the extension would actually happen.
