"If Fred Got Two Beatings a Day," Homework Asks

But within business or within medicine are smaller sub-fields that aren't ideal: drug overdose, means of murder, money laundering . . . it's long standing common sense that socially negative issues aren't to be used in such a way.

If Julio sells 5 vials of meth, how many Crips will take a shot at him for selling on their corner?

It doesn't say who wrote these math problems. I'd be willing to bet it wasn't the teachers.

I'd have written something more contemporary like this:

The red gang has 15 members, and the blue gang has 17. A member of the red gang kills a member of the blue gang every fifteen days, but the blue gang only blows away a member of the red gang every 20 days. If each gang is able to recruit three members a month, which gang will have the most members at the end of the year?

Now, that one takes some thought.

The red gang will end up with more members at the end of a full year.

If 12 teachers at your school handed out these questions to their students, and 5 out of every 6 teachers lacked tenure, and all the non-tenure teachers were fired for this idiocy, how many teachers would that leave?

Two too many.

Correct. See how easy it is when we relate math to the world that kids know?

You know, you are right. If 3 priests at a Catholic school ........ never mind, I'm not gonna go there.

These two in connection makes it obvious. Why even include this in mathematics? To me, academics should be completely objective. If you must use objects for mathematical word problems, use something as innocent as "fruit," or whatever.

Keep politics out of the classroom.

Yes use fruit.

Max was a fruit. So were his friends Barney, Larry, and Anthony.

If they went to New York and if Barney married Max and if Larry married Anthony, how many couples would that make?

Thank you.

In return, I will refrain, as a "dividee" rather than a "divider," from commenting on why "dividing the girls up by stamina instead of evenly" isn't...even.

'If Fred Got Two Beatings Per Day

Fun little article. I just love the quote, "This outrages me because it just lets me know that there's still racists," from the article, like the kind of person that does stupid **** like this is some sheet-wearing KKK member wanting to terrorize little black children-- instead of another well-meaning white liberal who just wants to uphold his civic responsibility to never let anyone forget that we're all victims. We should teach math in math classes, and leave the history lessons for the history classes.

Stuff like this shows that you can have a college degree and still be a ****en moron. Didn't anyone at that school think maybe they should keep history and other unrelated **** out of math homework?

History and math can certainly be tied together. After all, mathematics as a field of study had over 5,000 years of recorded history. However the way they went about this was ridiculous. I guess I can't really be angry though. This is part of the same education system that debates including creationism in our science classes.

Maybe they will try to add some sort of urban culture that glorifies scumbags to appeal to young kids living in ghettos. For example. Bob has 5 hoes working for him. Each of these hoes works for 12 hours a day.Yesterday in order to make sure his hoes are making his money and to keep them in line Bob had to bitch slap the first hoe every 2 hours, the 2nd hoe ever 3 hours, the 3rd hoe ever six hours and the last two hoes every 4 hours. How times yesterday did Bob have to bitch slap his hoes in order to keep his hoes in line and to make sure they were making his money?

935 lies were told to get us into Iraq. If the lies were told over a period of 18 months, how many lies per day were told?

I think the teachers used very poor judgement and should be written up. Ridiculous.

I think this kind of crap spewed on 8-yr-olds requires something a bit harsher than write-up. If my kid had been exposed to this, I'd be calling for that teacher's head on a platter.

Seriously? If my kid complained about this, I'd just roll my eyes and tell him to finish his math homework. This is embarrassing, but it isn't anything we need to do anything about.

Oh, I'd tell him to finish his homework, but I'd be in the principal's office the next day, asking why in hell they were teaching math by counting the number of beatings that were given to black slaves. Seriously, you don't think there is something kind of sick about this... technique?

Sure, there's something sick about it. Our entire culture is sick. But unlike all the other sick **** that's going on in our schools and in our media, this isn't harming anybody.

This is exactly the kind of garbage that tends to be created by $100,000 a year consultants whose job it is to "integrate curriculum." I'd still be willing to bet that the teachers didn't write these questions themselves.

First of all I have to say, I love this thread. Some great responses here.

My advice to the teachers is to accept their reprimand, and use something with the number of small pox blankets handed out to Indian babies so kids can work on probabilities. There aren't enough Indians left to offend. If that fails, use the Irish.

I disagree. A man gives his wife 2 beatings a day. How many beatings does he give her in a week? You see, the wrong kinds of questions may legitimize in the eyes of kids, who are in their formative years, actions which are quite repugnant.

Well, exactly. No reason why LaShondria, Johnnie, Brittany, and Jose can't be buying apples at the bodega to distribute to the poor, for Pete's sake!

j/k

I read the article and could not really find anything offensive. I thought the idea of working some social studies into the math curriculum was a good idea. Slavery was a part of our history, so what better way to bring economic realities of slavery to a class. It doesn't make any difference if the slaves are red, white and blue.
Capitalism is a bigger part of our history. Why not teach capitalism and math together?

Save your hate and slander of America for the adults and stop trying to teach my children to hate America.

Or, we could use something with the number of atrocities committed by the indians.

Are you calling teaching about mathematics teaching your "children to hate America"? Or are you calling teaching about slavery teaching your "children how to hate America?"

Are you trying to be funny? Or did I hurt your feelings by referring to creationism as non-science? I can't tell.

Turning a math class into a “shame on America” session is the correct answer.

Do you hate capitalism because it’s the American way or do you hate the American way because it’s based upon capitalism?
