Fisker Recalling 239 Karma Plug-In Hybrids for Fire Hazard - NYTimes.com

Fisker Automotive is recalling all 239 of its 2012 Karma luxury plug-in hybrid cars because of a fire hazard, according to a report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Prices on the 2012 model start at $103,000, including the destination charge.

In a report filed recently on the agency’s Web site, Fisker said some hose clamps were not properly positioned, which could allow a coolant leak. “If coolant enters the battery compartment an electrical short could possibly occur, causing a thermal event within the battery, including a possible fire in the worse case,” the company told the safety agency.

FLASH BACK; Car Company Gets U.S. Loan, Builds Cars In Finland
Car Company Gets U.S. Loan, Builds Cars In Finland - ABC News
With the approval of the Obama administration, an electric car company that received a $529 million federal government loan guarantee is assembling its first line of cars in Finland, saying it could not find a facility in the United States capable of doing the work.

Vice President Joseph Biden heralded the Energy Department's $529 million loan to the start-up electric car company called Fisker as a bright new path to thousands of American manufacturing jobs. But two years after the loan was announced, the company's manufacturing jobs are still limited to the assembly of the flashy electric Fisker Karma sports car in Finland.

Complete irony;
1st our government approves a $529 Million dollar loan to build cars here in the US to a company named Fisker...Fisker opens its plant in Finland not the US, now it is recalling the cars (all 50 that it has sold) because they catch fire.

Bad investment after bad investment from this administration. Maybe if they would stop making loan guarantees to their friends and campaign contributors and stop wasting our tax dollars on stupid crap we might not be in the situation we are still in.

Is there a fire hazard because it's built in finland? I don't get it.

no, read the article. According to the US auto maker (FISKER) there is a faulty coolant hose clamp assembly that allows coolant to leak on batteries causing a thermal reaction leading to fire.

To me the irony is they took tax payer money to build this car here in the US and opened their plant in Finland because they couldnt find anyone in the US to build it...so they took US tax payer money and jumped over to Finland to build this car where "they found the expertise" to build it and now it catches fire because of a faulty coolant clamp. Actually it isnt the part that is faulty, it was the way it was put on.

Yeah, but my point would be is they couldn't even conceive of building it here in the first place... that'd take like..... organization to improve education which... you know. Means govenrment.

I dont think that has anything to do with it.

Could it be the low corporate tax rate in Finland? 26% in enticing to a company compared to ours at 35% Federal plus state corporate income tax...close to if not over 50% depending on the state the business is in.

Seriously? 239 vehicles affected?

When every other car manufacturer regularly issues recalls affecting hundreds of thousands of vehicles?

No, there is a fire hazard because we are having unproven tech pushed on us before it is ready to be released, all because it is ideologically driven.

Oh that's what is was.

Who would have figured it was powered by sunshine and lollipops.

Thanks for clearing that up for us!

To note

Fisker did not open a plant in Finland. Valmet, a Finish contract manufacturer assembles the Fisker Karmer in one of its plants for Fisker. Long before the US government put any money into Fisker, the plan was not to build its own plants but contract it out

So, how mant of my tax dollars are paying for this hoopty?

those cars run on oil, so that's ok.

get a horse, and all.

Hose technology is not ready to be released

By god we better get NASA on this as hoses are everywhere. My gasoline powered car has quite a few and if it is not ready to be released it is putting me in danger

:doh You guy's are real funny.... Comedians in your own mind.

Less than Iraq and less than the bailouts to the banks and wall street.

so the recall for this vehicle is not due to a hose clamp

If is for a hose clamp your entire rant is meaningless as the cause stated is a faluire of a hose clamp

Fisker automobiles are actually very good quality, hybrid automobiles. You should find a dealer near you and take one for a test drive!

Toyota is recalling 420,000 gas burners.

I suppose this happened because, "we are having unproven tech pushed on us before it is ready to be released, all because it is ideologically driven." Would that be your assessment?

Problems with hoses have absolutely never happened to conventional cars. And never will. This sort of problem is definitely tied to THOSE DARN ENVIRONMENTALISTS AND BIG GUBMINT

j-mac is the type of guy who would have been opposed to going to the Moon simply because it hadn't been done before and a Democrat was in office..

If by being opposed to the moon you mean making my current source of energy more and more expensive because you want to replace it with unproven tech. then yes.

That makes absolutely no sense.

1) nobody other than OPEC really controls gas prices
2) gas prices aren't dependent on actual supply and demand but speculation
3) even if by some weird miracle of that bizarre world you live in, alternative technology as it is today could influence gas prices, it would make gas prices go down because it would mean there is a worthwhile demand for alternative technology, which there isn't.

In other words, you have no idea what it is you're talking about.

Really, j-mac? I suppose you're the type who'd go out and purchase a Honda Civic Hybrid long before buying an American hybrid car? But wait...

You're such the patriot and a true supporter of American own businesses, right?

You guys really crack me up! You sit there complaining about a small fraction of American made cars being recalled over a small correctable defect and why? Because it's a green energy car company the Obama Administration supported? Nevermind that besides for this little hickup the Fisker automobile is a damned good American made luxury, hybrid sports car!

This reminds me of a fun fact. Anyone know what the number one export was from the U.S. last year? Fuel!
