House leader rejects Senate payroll tax plan(edited)

Re: Boehner bows to Teaparty and reverses support for payroll tax cut deal.

To the contrary, the House Majority Leader is most certainly the leader of House Republicans. That's why the elected him Speaker. Obama is in the unfortunate position of having to negotiate with someone who can't even speak for his own caucus.

LOL!!!

You didn't read what I said...you read what you wanted to see.

So it goes.

Anyway, perhaps Obama should leave it up to his Congressional buddies to do the negotiating, eh? Except they don't like what he's demanding anymore than the Republicans do.

Again...so it goes.

Re: Boehner bows to Teaparty and reverses support for payroll tax cut deal.

Nothing to think about. The House passed a year long bill, the Senate passed a 2 month bill. What's the point of going through all of this again in only two months ??

Obama said he wants a yearly bill, not a 2 month bill, so that is what the House gave him.

Why do you think it's a good thing to fight this same fight in only 2 months ??

Why do you think it's a good thing to add $17 to everyone's house payment to pay for this ??

More nonsense. The Senate Republicans fillibustered the year long deal several times. They then worked out a bipartisan agreement that passsed by 89 votes and went home. The T's in the House don't want the tax cuts extended at all without poison pils the Dems won't accept. That's their Christmas "gift" to the American people, raising our taxes. Merry Christmas from the Teaparty:(

LOL, working with the president is a bad thing and now rasing taxes seems to be a bad thing. I think this is without a doubt my favorite thread.

Pssst......that's why we have two houses of Congress. Both have to agree.

The Senate Dems put their own poison pills in their bill, like the short duration that was against Obama's wishes. And paying for the bill by increasing everyone's house payments. Not a good way to boost the slumping housing market.

Who is working with the President and what happened to the pledge not to raise taxes? Is it only for the Koch Bros. ? Seems the T's are a bunch of liars.

Re: Boehner bows to Teaparty and reverses support for payroll tax cut deal.

The House passed a bill larded up with poison pills that they knew perfectly well Democrats would never accept. Democrats have said that they should pass a temporary extension to prevent the tax from going up while they work out a compromise. Boehner can't even herd his cats into approving that.

I love what is considered a poison pill.

Republicans - We need a decision on this subject now.
Democrats - Decision making is a poison pill during an election year.

The poison pill you speak about is the Republicans wanting jobs. Democrats have never cared about jobs, just entitlements, and more borrowing and spending.

You need to go back to your Dem talking points memo and read it closer. Maybe you can find some new and different looney left things to say. I'm sure you've forgotten to mention someone that the left hates.

Re: Boehner bows to Teaparty and reverses support for payroll tax cut deal.

I think the most interesting part about this debate is how a year ago, letting the Bush tax cuts expire wasn't "raising taxes", but letting the payroll tax cut expire is "raising taxes".

You are right, it's the fault of the boogeymen.

The T's in the House are "boogeymen"? I have a different word for them.

Re: Boehner bows to Teaparty and reverses support for payroll tax cut deal.

They shouldn't extend the payroll tax cut. It was a dumb idea to begin with, and should be stopped ASAP.

Its the only targeted tax we have, and extended it will further drive SS and Medicare deeper into the ****hole they are already in.

Re: Boehner bows to Teaparty and reverses support for payroll tax cut deal.

You people are sad.

Seriously.

What did Boehner reject? A TWO MONTH extension. That was it. 60 days. What ****ing good is that? What is one of the things businesses say is a detriment to doing business? Not knowing. A two month "extension" that is being used by as a political football, just punt the issue for later. He said "no, **** that, either do it for a year or not at all".

But I don't expect any of you to be honest, you're just repeating the DNC talking points here. The fact the Senate GOP went along with it? They haven't the votes to pass what they want so it was stonewall or move ahead.

Re: Boehner bows to Teaparty and reverses support for payroll tax cut deal.

Officials from the policy-neutral National Payroll Reporting Consortium, Inc. have expressed concern to members of Congress that the two-month payroll tax holiday passed by the Senate and supported by President Obama cannot be implemented properly.

Pete Isberg, president of the NPRC today wrote to the key leaders of the relevant committees of the House and Senate, telling them that “insufficient lead time” to implement the complicated change mandated by the legislation means the two-month payroll tax holiday “could create substantial problems, confusion and costs affecting a significant percentage of U.S. employers and employees.”

House leader rejects Senate payroll tax plan - CNN.com

The spineless GOP House leader has shown his weakness again by changing his position on the bipartisan Senate payroll tax cut deal. After first saying "It was a good deal" he now says he opposes it. As Nancy put it ""By holding up this bipartisan compromise, tea party House Republicans are walking away once again, showing their extremism and clearly demonstrating that they never intended to give the middle class a tax cut," Pelosi said.

is it any wonder that the approval rating of Congress is in the single digits? Allowing a minority to determine policy is against our Constitution isn't it?
Boehner needs to grow a pair and get his House in order. We the people need to throw those Koch employees out of the House in 2012 or face more and more obstructionism.

Obama promised to veto the bill anyway.

Passing the bill wil mean no change at all to withholding, and the full year version would be passed before this expires again meaning no change. With no agreement their will most likely be a retroactive version passed next year. Wouldn't that be more of a pain than making no changes? Of course it will and this in nothing but a red herring.

Wrong, Obama promised to sign the 2 month extension even though it was not what he wanted. He's forced to make alot of lemonade with Congress so full of lemons.

LOL Why is it that Republican administratons have such a bad record of job creation then? They WANT high unemployment it keeps wages stagnant.

If it's going to pass anyway, just pass it. As far as the ramifications, I think I'll stick with the experts here.

No, the main poison pills I'm speaking of are reducing unemployment insurance from 99 weeks to 59 weeks, allowing states to drug test people applying for unemployment, and forcing a premature decision on the XL pipeline. Republicans know that Democrats will never go for any of those provisions. On the flip side, Republicans were most vocal about their objection to the Democrats' plan of paying for the payroll cuts via a surtax on income over a million dollars. So what did Democrats do? They dropped that idea.

But the democrats are only making a 2 month deal. Let’s get the yearlong deal. Even better, let's permanently adjust the tax rate where everyone is happy, this way we don't have to waste congressional time every 6 weeks to figure the damn thing out again. It is becoming ground hog day.

Re: Boehner bows to Teaparty and reverses support for payroll tax cut deal.

Also, I heard a snippet from Pelozi about how keeping unemployment at 99 weeks or extending would actually create jobs. Did I mishear? How does that work?

ETA News Release: US Labor Department study underscores positive impact of unemployment insurance [11/16/2010]

Department of Labor said:
...for every dollar spent on unemployment insurance, this report finds an increase in economic activity of two dollars.

Which means we can spur the economy to infinity by increasing the tax rate to 99.9999999999999999999999999% and put all the money into unemployment. :p

Unemployment payments are a very effective form of stimulus because the unemployed push close to 100% of what they receive back into the economy. That benefits the businesses community, and the better businesses do, the more inclined they are to hire.

Good thing those businesses have to pay extra taxes that keep that unemployement check flowing. They wouldn't want anyone to miss getting their share.
