Re: House Passes Payroll Tax Cut Extension With Keystone Pipeline Provision Read mor

I think the Dem's position on this bill is that it shouldn't be a Dem bill where they need to make concessions to the Reps in order to get it passed. The Reps should be behind it 100% and require no concessions. That's why they're threatening to veto it. This is, after all, a tax cut, or at least an extension of one. If they're willing to let it expire, they should be equally willing to let other tax cuts expire (specifically the bush ones, which we all know isn't so).

I'm actually mostly for approving the pipeline, but I object to this bill more on principal than content. Tax cuts and the pipeline aren't really related, and I'm of the opinion that bills going through congress should pertain to only a single subject at a time. In other words, the Reps can negotiate concessions from the Dems in this bill, but only if those concessions are related to taxes. Likewise, if concessions need to be made to get the pipeline approved, those concessions should be related to environmental protection.

I thought the Dems were all about, "compromise".

what's the point of compromising with ideologues who refuse to compromise with anyone?

From what I understand this bill gives Democrats everything they asked for (payroll tax relief, extension of unemployment insurance, Social Security/Medicare) but requires the President to make a decision on the Keystone pipeline within 60 days instead of putting it off until the next election. Why is Harry Reid calling this bill "dead" and why is Obama threatening veto? Is the Keystone pipeline such a contentious issue that the Democrats would veto the other concessions made by Republicans? Do the Democrats/Liberals on this board support this bill or are you against it?

It just goes to show that for the Dems/Libbos, agenda takes priority over the well being of the country.

You blame Obama because Republicans intentionally included a poison pill -- screwing with struggling middle class Americans so they could tweak Obama on the nose? Really?

How is making a decision to allow a pipeline project to proceed and create jobs a, "poison pill"?

right, that's why the GOP said that the most important thing for them to accomplish during Obama's first administration, was to get rid of Obama.

what's the point of compromising with ideologues who refuse to compromise with anyone?

Then you agree with Republicans when they refuse to compromise with democratic ideologues then ??

Which is what the losing party is going to do in 2012...no matter who wins.

we don't pay Congressmen & Senators to spend four-years focusing just on the next Presidential election, and getting nothing else done.

but apparently, this is ok for the GOP.

Why not? If the president is harming the country, it's the duty of our congressmen to help get him voted out. It's all that, "messy democracy", stuff.

Do you actually believe the Dems didn't spend 4 years trying to get Bush out of office ???

If you do, I need to talk to you about some bridges I have for sale.

How is Congress trying to override Nebraska's prerogative when they passed the House bill this week, while TransCanada agreed to reroute the pipeline in November????

This is how:

"Capitol Hill Republicans, backed by industry groups, want to force a quick decision on the pipeline, which the administration currently plans to review into 2013."

No, I don't believe that Democrats filibustered bills that they actually supported, just because Bush supported them, too -- as Republicans have done. I believe that Democrats actually voted based on whether they thought the measure before them was good for the country. Their first thought wasn't, "how can I vote to **** up President Bush?"

Is that so? You don't believe? Really?

The Democrats had been using the filibuster to prevent the confirmation of conservative appellate court candidates nominated by President George W. Bush. In the Republican-controlled 108th Congress, ten Bush judicial nominees had been filibustered by the minority Democrats. The ten Bush appellate nominees who were filibustered were Miguel Estrada, Priscilla Owen, Charles W. Pickering, Carolyn Kuhl, David W. McKeague, Henry Saad, Richard Allen Griffin, William H. Pryor, William Gerry Myers III and Janice Rogers Brown.

As a result of these ten filibusters, Senate Republicans began to threaten to change the existing Senate rules by using what Senator Trent Lott termed the "nuclear option" and which Republicans tended to call the "constitutional option." This change in rules would eliminate the use of the filibuster to prevent judicial confirmation votes.

Read again, the claim was the Dems didn't filibuster bills they actually supported. You bring up CONSERVATIVE nominees. Why would the Dems support conservative nominees?

Well, that was just a cursory search for the times back then....Do we need to debate the entire Bush terms for the rest of eternity to continue to excuse this administration from their destructive path for this country?

Look, Obama's gang are being just as disingenuous as the demo's are in this crap. You can't claim you're the great compromiser, the great uniter, then say your compromise is that repubs do it your way.
