Reuters – Mon Dec 12, 2011
TEHRAN (Reuters) - A member of the Iranian parliament's National Security Committee said on Monday that the military was set to practice its ability to close the Gulf to shipping at the narrow Strait of Hormuz, the most important oil transit channel in the world, but there was no official confirmation.

The legislator, Parviz Sarvari, told the student news agency ISNA: "Soon we will hold a military maneuver on how to close the Strait of Hormuz. If the world wants to make the region insecure, we will make the world insecure."

Contacted by Reuters, a spokesman for the Iranian military declined to comment.

Iran's energy minister told Al Jazeera television last month that Tehran could use oil as a political tool in the event of any future conflict over its nuclear program.

Tension over the program has increased since the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported on November 8 that Tehran appears to have worked on designing a nuclear bomb and may still be pursuing research to that end. Iran strongly denies this and says it is developing nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

Iran has warned it will respond to any attack by hitting Israel and U.S. interests in the Gulf and analysts say one way to retaliate would be to close the Strait of Hormuz.

I think it's going to be critical how Obama responds to this development. I think it critical to inform Iran, in polite but firm terms, that they ponder what they please. But closing the strait isn't going to happen, ever.

Can we please avoid another war in the middle east? Let China fight it. They need middle eastern oil more than we do.

In the case of Iran shutting down middle eastern oil supply....yeah, dumb. They would be facing practically the whole world of net importing oil companies. That's a world of hurt.

Carter Doctrine:

The region which is now threatened by Soviet troops in Afghanistan is of great strategic importance: It contains more than two-thirds of the world's exportable oil. The Soviet effort to dominate Afghanistan has brought Soviet military forces to within 300 miles of the Indian Ocean and close to the Straits of Hormuz, a waterway through which most of the world's oil must flow. The Soviet Union is now attempting to consolidate a strategic position, therefore, that poses a grave threat to the free movement of Middle East oil.
This situation demands careful thought, steady nerves, and resolute action, not only for this year but for many years to come. It demands collective efforts to meet this new threat to security in the Persian Gulf and in Southwest Asia. It demands the participation of all those who rely on oil from the Middle East and who are concerned with global peace and stability. And it demands consultation and close cooperation with countries in the area which might be threatened.
Meeting this challenge will take national will, diplomatic and political wisdom, economic sacrifice, and, of course, military capability. We must call on the best that is in us to preserve the security of this crucial region.
Let our position be absolutely clear: An attempt by any outside force to gain control of the Persian Gulf region will be regarded as an assault on the vital interests of the United States of America, and such an assault will be repelled by any means necessary, including military force.

It's been this way since even before Carter, nevertheless.....I think this doctrine could be reasonably extended to an "inside force".

I hope Iran pulls a stunt like this.

We could defeat the Iranian navy in about 15 minutes. LOL

He's so 90s. We don't want insecurity, we want more Arab Spring.

This reminds me of a nine-year old kid threatening to hold his breath if he doesn't get his way.

And like usual, I'm sure Obama will proceed in a way that you would expect of the Nobel peace prize holder, and in line with the Yemen precedent of calling no-fly zones, bombing runs, and supporting terrorist organizations and all the rest of his "humanitarian"ventures.

I see... You're going to stop that from happening??

Put 3-4 ships lined up and blow them up and the straight is effectively blocked... Then if they keep firing at that area they could keep that straight blocked for MONTHS, as a best case.

What's more, analysts have shown that by blocking the straight there would be a spike in oil price up to around 250$/barrel. So, how long do you figure the us economy could be sustained with that surge in price??

Remember, oil prices hit around 150$/barrel and that was the spark that pushed the economy into a contraction, and if you're not aware you can thank the Russians for increasing their production and reducing the price to current levels.

Iran won't cut off its own life blood unless threatened, which is why the war hawks need to stay the hell away from Iran and stop beating the war drums. That includes Israel.

I could use some new windows at home. Turn Iran to glass and let Home Depot sell it.

Iran keeps it up with the nuke program, Israel will take them out.

What do you need? Little windows or big windows? They can make little ones with all the kids that are killed. Ten kids per window.

Asshole.

Have you ever heard of the Caspian Sea?

Yeah! Let 'em get nukes and be like North Korea. Everyone loves North Korea!

And then spend 10 years and trillions of dollars attempting to fix their country? Thanks, but no thanks.

Perhaps you should look into what happened in Iraq and learn a lesson from it.

Oh now that was nasty...not being a Liberal-rat I won't report this infraction but you really need to lighten up or else just take a Valium.

No they won't. They can't.

Yes... they can. Do you understand warfare? Then you'd know Israel can turn most of Iran into a glass parking lot if it came down to it, and they are MORE then capable of hammering the Iranians through conventional means.

I would be less afraid of letting the US clean this up than Israel. Letting Israel off its chain would unbalance the entire Middle East.

BTW, I don't want us fighting over there anymore, I am just saying that the US would be nicer than Israel through the whole process.

And nicer is why we failed for the last 50 years in war. You want to win a war, you annihilate the enemy, and destroy their ability to make war. But that's not "nice", and it's "illegal".
