Horses could soon be butchered in the U.S. for human consumption after Congress quietly lifted a 5-year-old ban on funding horse meat inspections, and activists say slaughterhouses could be up and running in as little as a month.
Slaughter opponents pushed a measure cutting off funding for horse meat inspections through Congress in 2006 after other efforts to pass outright bans on horse slaughter failed in previous years. Congress lifted the ban in a spending bill President Barack Obamasigned into law Nov. 18 to keep the government afloat until mid-December.
It did not, however, allocate any new money to pay for horse meat inspections, which opponents claim could cost taxpayers $3 million to $5 million a year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture would have to find the money in its existing budget, which is expected to see more cuts this year as Congress and the White House aim to trim federal spending.

Can The McFlicka be far behind?

Iirc, when they we're last allowed to slaughter horses, most of the meat was sent over seas. It wasn't that long ago.

That's right. There's no market for horse meat in NA. Most of it is shipped to France and a few other European countries.

I'm looking forward to cheese-horseburgers at Mickey D's. I propose we call it the "National Velveeta".

i think i'll stick with the usual, thanks.

Horse meat is used to make dogfood.

^THAT got a laugh out of me....

Anyway, horse meat tastes like deer, in that it's dry, tough, and gamey. Cooked right (read, STEW) it's OK. The only reason why folks every really ate the stuff was for lack of any other meat to eat. Generally, cows are better, and they cost less to raise, so I doubt horse meat is gonna catch on in the states, since even the cheapest chuck steak is on par with horse, and will cost a LOT less.

You want a GOOD meat, got for buffalo. Bisen is like the tuxedo of meats. Make yourself a good buffalo burger...yeah, it may just be the most expensive burger you every made...but oh man, it's good!

No it doesn't. It has a somewhat sweeter taste. It tastes like horse.

Not that I really noticed. If I had not known, I would have thought I was having beef roast. It probably has something to do with preparation. I have had venison that I thought was downright unpleasant tasting, and some that tasted just like beef.

Yep, with the less desirable meats, and cuts of meat, it's all about the prep. Deer can be dry, tough, and gamey...but put it in a stew, and it'll be the best damn stew you ever had. Brisket is an awful cut of meat, but I'm QUITE fond of corned beef and cabbage. Or slow cooked brisket...but if someone doesn't do it right? That stuff is tough, and tasteless.

While the better meats, and better cuts, require less work. Take the ribeye, for example. Best steak in the world, in my opinion. Just grill it, with some salt, pepper, onion and garlic. Done. Or rib meat off a pig. That stuff's delicious no matter HOW you cook it...

Food is food. Let them eat horse...some of us already eat cat and dog.

You don't have to put venison in a stew to make it taste great..........you just have to cook it properly. I've cooked a whole hindquarter that tasted exactly like prime rib when I was finished.

As someone who is very fond of horses, has spent time with them, and who has owned two; I will not do business with any restaurant chain that uses horsemeat or any grocery that sells it. Period. It's a disgusting concept to even consider so far as I'm concerned.

Why not? It's not like it's cat or dog flavoured, they can be an acquired taste.

Ever been around horses, Manc? I don't know how anyone who has ever spent any time around these magnificent creatures could ever even consider eating one. Not a chance in hell that I could ever do it. Hell, most of the horses I've known rank highly among my favorite people I've ever met.

LOL @ "cat or dog flavoured"

I stopped judging people a long time ago about foods they ate - I stick to the usual and traditional but in other countries I'm one strange weirdo for liking soda and prunes.

I use to watch "Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern" - and man . . . people think horse is unacceptable or gross?

We consume the sacred cow and fish.

To me - one culture's relationship with an animal doesn't mean another culture MUST view it in the same way.

Do I want my Big Mac to be made from Sea Bisquit?

NNNNNAAAAAAYYYYYY.

Deer is not dry and tough though, not if prepared right. Stewing is only one way, but certainly not the only. A lot of game meat such as deer or elk can be very easy to make dry and tough if you do not know how to cook it. The margin for failure is larger than with beef which we have engineered to have proper fat marbling through the meat (making it easier to cook and harder to **** up). But well prepared elk or deer or buffalo is delicious.

As for horse meat; maybe it could be delicious too...but I'm going to just go ahead and say that I don't need to add another animal to my diet.

It's not like it would be used in place of hamburger meat - For, what, a $50.00 burger? You know it's not cheap like that.

Horse is really nice, especially the way they serve it in nGermany!
