Horses Could Soon Be Slaughtered for Meat in U.S.

Ever been around horses, Manc? I don't know how anyone who has ever spent any time around these magnificent creatures could ever even consider eating one. Not a chance in hell that I could ever do it. Hell, most of the horses I've known rank highly among my favorite people I've ever met.

Pigs are extremely intelligent, yet we eat bacon. LOL.

Just another reason for me to NEVER go to Europe.

I don't know - a lot of women who don't have decent jobs or a solid education - Sounds like your kind of place.

:D Just a joke - don't get yourself in a tizzy.

They are a smart animal, but not smart enough to avoid slaughter. HAHAHAHAH. Stupid pigs.

But horses....horses are amongst the dumbest animals on the planet. The only thing they ever offered was transportation before we discovered the car.

Horses values have dropped so much now, that free horses are readily available. Abandonment and neglect issues are huge, due to the economy. Now US horses are begin shipped to Canada and Mexico. There are horrific stories on the internet about inhumane slaughter in Mexico. Horsemen are split on the issue. US horse slaughter will likely bring the prices up. There's a huge problem with thousands of mustangs in govmnt holding pens in Nevada. I don't know how long a horse slaughter facility would be in business here. Oregon had one in Redmond, but it was sabotaged (I think in the 80's/burned?) by animal right groups. Horses are actually quite intelligent. They rank up there with dogs and cats.

Then I say eat the horses. They taste much better than cars.

Your sense of humor is not endearing yourself to me today. Though I am well aware that's not what it's intended to do in the least.

The problem is that horses are a LUXURY item. As someone who owned one horse and was half owner of another for the better part of a decade I'm truly aware of that fact. Horses are not easy or inexpensive to maintain. They need space, exercise, and a fairly large investment of time and money to maintain. However, I will tell you that the comment made by Theodore Roosevelt (I believe) about the outside of a horse being good for the inside of a man is among the most true statements I've ever heard.

It is terrible to see what is happening to many of these unwanted animals right now. I have gone out of my way to ensure that none of my dogs have ever eaten food from companies that use horsemeat. I will not eat it. However, we obviously have a massive glut of unwanted horses in this country right now. I know that when I sold my horse a year ago, I got about 75% of what I had paid for him originally. I did include a buyback/no kill clause in the bill of sale. Not that I think his new owner would do anything like that, but just in case. There has to be a better option than turning to the horsemeat market for dealing with these animals. Of course that is the easiest and most profitable option, but I don't know how anyone who has ever spent time with a horse could even consider it.

How vile! Be careful what you eat. You might have seen it at a rodeo.

I wonder if one of those fast food joints or maybe even a whole new franchise chain will add horse meat items to their menus... yummy can't wait to have some food to provide me with a little giddy up.

I bet if you dipped some horse meat in batter and fried it, we could get your new franchise chain off the ground and competing with McDonalds in a month.

Man that sounds good. We could have sauces and everything...just like buffalo wings, but we will call it Mare Bites. The name is open to debate, but I think our business model is ready.

I am not vegetarian, so the issue of horse slaughter has been a tough one for me. I am a horse lover, and could not imagine eating it. However, over the years, I mostly accepted horse slaughter because I though it would be hypocritical of me to judge. However now, with newfound knowledge, I think differently, so please let me explain.

As much as I possibly can, I buy my meat from people who treat their animals with respect including the time of their slaughter. Done properly, a captive bolt to the head kills an animal almost instantly. With cows, sheep and pigs, this can be easily done. However, with horses, it's almost impossible. Horses are animals of flight and particularily in instances of stress, they are too nervous to stand still--even a few second--to receive the bolt in the proper place. Often, many are left to die horrible excruciating deaths as the bolts failed to meet the target.

I simply cannot agree with this.

Having ridden horses growing up, I could never eat one, but I guess they're fair game. I think they're more intelligent than cattle though.

Oh thank God - I was worried you started to like me again.
