Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums. We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked.”
Valve are investigating the situation. They mention that there’s been no evidence of illegal credit card activity as yet, and that it’s probably a good idea to change both your Steam passwords. To do that, access Settings from the Steam menu within the client.

I know alot of people buy games via Steam. Figured I would make sure this got posted so people who have knew to watch their CC activity and to change your password. Sony and Steam now have both been hacked this year. I cannot recommend enough the value of not giving out your CC info even to trusted sites. I don't even use a CC at Amazon any more, but buy the gift cards, it's just safer. No site is 100 % secure, and if a group wants to hack a site badly enough, they can and will.

Tis why I had my steam linked to my paypal instead of credit card.

Re: Steam database hacked. Encrypted credit card information and passwords compromise

This is good to know. Thank you for the info.

I don't use Steam...I tend to buy retail copies of games at brick and mortar outlets, but my son uses Steam. I'll pass the heads up to him...if he doesn't already know about it.

Re: Steam database hacked. Encrypted credit card information and passwords compromise

Great heads up. I have a active steam account, and I have not recieved any emails or warnings about this from the company...but they happily took my cc info just a month and a half ago.

Re: Steam database hacked. Encrypted credit card information and passwords compromise

I never worry about this stuff. Unauthorized charge on my credit card? That's what we've got those 1%'ers for. Delete. Never had a problem. A casino I visit sent me a letter saying their check-cashing records had been hacked. So what? Take unauthorized money out of my bank account? Hurray for the 1%'ers. ;)

Seriously, though, would someone please tell me why a PIN isn't required with every credit card transaction? That'd stop credit card fraud in the New York Minute. Is it such a small problem that the banks don't give a damn? Or is it something more sinister...

I would vote for sinister. Many of the states have passed laws requiring the CC company to prove that money is owed. In states that don't have this protection, are you boned? I don't think so, but there are still a lot of hurdles to get that off your credit card.

That's weird. Steam didn't send me **** for an email telling me that. :(

I love Steam for the most part and I use it all the time. No need for discs laying around that get scratched all the time. They can try to use my account but there is no money in there right now anyway. :3oops:

I always wondered what the term steam punk meant. Now I know. LOL.

Steam posted it as a message when you log into Steam. Thats the only place it came up. It was listed in with the specials promo boxes that comes up showing the daily/weekly specials.

Re: Steam database hacked. Encrypted credit card information and passwords compromise

After the PS3 thing, I keep credit card info as far away from these things as possible.

Yeah, this is correct. For it being such a big deal, they did not make much effort to notify people.

Re: Steam database hacked. Encrypted credit card information and passwords compromise

Really? Who cares? With Steam, it charges your card. You notify your CC company of the hack situation, and that you haven't purchased any new games and they refund your money no questions asked.

It's way safer using a CC online than a Debit card in your hand.

Ummmmm...they would not use the CC numbers to buy games or anything else on Steam...

Re: Steam database hacked. Encrypted credit card information and passwords compromise

While obviously not great, this is not a huge disaster. The credit card numbers were kept encrypted, which means that even if stolen they would have be decrypted to be of any use to the hackers. If any information was stolen, it was most likely personal data like your address and the data for your steam account.
