several major league Republicans including powerful state Senator Bill Seitz opposed the bill

several of its more popular provisions will be enacted in the next few months

and Issue THREE is winning easily as of now-that is the one that is the anti Obama Care provision

Hey, if the idiots in Ohio think their taxes need to go up, so be it. This vote will only help the states that are going bankrupt to end that journey in a hurry.

no what it means is that cities will have to lay off union workers

The blowhard kasich lost...the dirtbags numbers are in the 20s....I used to really like Kasich when he was a congressman even though I wasnt in his district...I thought he had common sense and was intelligent and he was NOT THIS TEAPARTY FAR RIGHT ARSEWIPE that he morphed into...he jumped on the far rigth lets murder the working class train...

Can't do meaningful layoffs with the collective bargaining extortion law in place, taxes will go up. Seriously, this is good news for non-union states, our taxes will be lower and we will be able to attract businesses from places like Ohio.

well, i'm not an Ohiowan and never will be, so i don't really care what they do there.

that said, i'm a firm opponent of public sector unions and I won't ever celebrate them being handed power over taxpayers/voters.
they should be banned outright,forever.....not given power over government..

FDR had it right...the labor unions of the 50's and 60's* had it right..... contemporary liberals and progressives and the modern labor movement have it wrong...
while they bray about democracy and the power of the people, they actively seek to undermine it.. and are quite adept and successful at it too.

*( in the late 50's the AFL-CIO executive council said "“In terms of accepted collective bargaining procedures, government workers have no right beyond the authority to petition Congress — a right available to every citizen.”)

What it means is that the people of Ohio realized that teachers and firefighters aren't the problem, despite unrelenting efforts by Republicans to demonize them.

what is the cause of your hard on for the tea party? cutting back your pension?

They didnt touch my pension and they cant..and let me give you a clue..I dont need my pension to live a good life.

The teaparty is of the rich and only for the rich...Each one of the teaparty supported and elected govs have screwed public workers vilified them and either gave or tried to give what they took of them to the richest and the corporations.
Turtledude the GOP cant bullchit the mass's anymore...WE KNOW CORPORATIONS PAY SQUAT for taxs and the rich pay pennies on what they used to pay and should pay...WE KNOW the rich have milked this country dry and screwed every working person in their path as they did it...but the biggest thing that turned me against the teaparty is their RHETORIC..that sounds just like YOURS...everyone that isnt rich is a parasitic pos...and they and their families deserve NOTHING...nada, no pensions, no healthcare no security, their only function as humans is to service the rich and make them richer.....IM RICH I GOT MINE and screw everyone else....well screw the teaparty :)

the bill was passed without much debate or input. it was a mistake to lump public safety workers with the teachers. some provisions such as not protecting seniority, rather than competence are very popular and will probably be passed in the near future.

this is really hysterical. most of the people in the tea party movement are not the top 1 percent but rather those are tired of government waste, entitlement mentality and being told that they need to pay more and more taxes. Its the people who actually are paying income taxes

So what is the problem in minds of the Ohio voters? They aren't paying enough taxes?

do you have any proof that the teaparty is mostly made up of people making more than 250K a year?

Something other than teachers and firefighters, obviously. Perhaps they realize that there is no real difference in budget problems between states that allow collective bargaining and those that don't. Maybe they recognize that the bulk of the problem states are facing stems from lost revenue due to the recession rather than collective bargaining? Or -- and I know this is out there -- *maybe* they just think that the people who teach their children and who risk their lives protecting *their* lives and property deserve to make a living wage? Crazy, right?

that actually is a good point. it was stupid to tie the public safety workers to the AFSCME and Teachers

that was a BIG BIG mistake

Two key ballot measures tonight landed squarely on the Left, this being one of them.

Note that the proponents of the law vastly outspent the opponents, yet though the opponents won.

I don't think that's the case.

The numbers never moved much on SB5. Reaction was overwhelmingly negative and remained so. Proponents of the law knew it was headed for defeat months ago -- Kasich went so far as to offer a renegotiation of the law after previously stonewalling the same -- while the pro-union spending was unbelievable: blanket radio and TV time, plenty of slick signage. There was definite passion on this issue.

It's also worth noting that Ohio voters opted to alter the state constitution to reject Obamacare. It's a mistake to think this is all about partisanship. People were directly affected by SB5.

Chalk one up for the good hard-working people of Ohio....despite the best efforts of the corporate minded GOP's propoganda!

It would have been closer had police and firefighters been exempted like in Wisconsin, I agree.

But everyone loves a teacher -- they're respected by most. Generally conservative parents will defend them when it personally involves their children. I think the bill still would have been unpopular.

Nope.... do you have any proof that anyone is suggesting that people making less than 250k/yr should pay more taxes? Well besides Herman Cain, Rick Perry and any other person suggesting a flat tax.

EDIT: Keep in mind these were your words: "this is really hysterical. most of the people in the tea party movement are not the top 1 percent but rather those are tired of government waste, entitlement mentality and being told that they need to pay more and more taxes. Its the people who actually are paying income taxes"

EDIT 2: oops meant to mention: Bold emphasis added by me.

Always worth a laugh when people actually consider bargaining a right.

If you are forcing someone to bargain with you it can't possibly be a right to do.

Please do not tell me but that isn't what it is about. If the government said no just once people would cry they had their rights violated and this kind of thing proves it.

I actually think the "no on issue 2" side's propaganda was worse this time -- at least there was definitely a lot more of it.

Check out this bit of propaganda.

Here's one from the other side.

Sad.
