The wife of convicted Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff says that she and Bernie were so upset after the collapse of his multi-billion-dollar fraud that they decided to commit suicide together on Christmas Eve. "I don't know whose idea it was, but we decided to kill ourselves because it was so horrendous what was happening," Ruth Madoff told Morley Safer of CBS News. "We had terrible phone calls. Hate mail, just beyond anything and I said '...I just can't go on anymore.'"
Ruth Madoff says that she and her husband downed pills, Ambien and perhaps Klonopin, on Christmas Eve, 2008, just after their sons Mark and Andrew had turned Bernie into federal authorities. She says she didn't mix the pills with alcohol because she was afraid they would vomit the pills back up.

With the nature of what they did and privacy laws being what they are where medical treatment is concerned it's no surprise it wasn't reported. If they were admitted to a hospital confedentiality laws would have prohibited the release of that information without their consent or if they had died the consent of the family. I think they released this now in an attempt to gain sympathy but IMO there is no sympathy to be had, they are criminals who ruined quite a few people's financial lives.

These people were smart enough to get away with defrauding people of tens of billions of dollars without anyone noticing for years but were so ****ing stupid they couldn't even get killing themselves right...
 
After everything he did, saving us the expense of keeping him in prison would be the only decent thing to do. It's a shame they failed.

And it's really, really hard to kill yourself with just Klonopin. You need the alcohol to create the respiratory depression that does the job. Heh. And Klonopin has anti-emetic properties anyway.
 
While I'm not that crass that I wish their attempt had been successful I really wouldn't have cared if it had been.
 
i think they should take a lie detector test when being asked about this "alleged" suicide pact. sounds like pure 100% BS.. more likely a ploy to get some talkshow money.

Maybe you should pay attention to information a little closely before forming an opinion. In a live interview with Wife Madoff, she spcifically stated that they took pills in attempt to kill themselves but they both woke up.
 
This is a perfect example of how a certain generation beat, raped, murderd, burned, pulverized, and dispersed the concepts of accountibility and responsiblity into oblivion.

I know far too many people that simply cannot grasp the concept of consequences and reality. He is lucky the law got him before somebody who could care less.

Perhaps he should try harder next time.

Ironically, the government impersonates Madoff on a daily basis, with no consequences.

Given his son's suicide, I don't know how Madoff endures his days. Or his wife either. This has to be a punishment so much worse than death.

And now that he is in prison, they'll no longer allow him the option of honorable suicide. I can't think of anything crueler.
 
If I was unsuccessful at Suicide, It would make me all the more determined to succeed.
 
Why even post that? It's only good news if they succeed. :mrgreen:
