Chemical bomb tossed into Occupy Maine encampment

Of course, because your attempt at, "The Tea Party did it too!", turned into a smack down for you.

What smack down? I openly admitted I could find no articles that conclusively pointed to a Tea Partier being arrested during their rallies. The one article I did find that eluded to such turned out to be misleading, and the individual who pointed it out to me - we both agreed on the matter at hand and let it go. So, where's the smack down in that?

Communism and Socialism don't have merit, IMO.

But, go right ahead and discuss their merits. I would love to see them, because so far, they haven't been presented.

Over-hyped partisanship... But again, all you have to do is read the Declaration and accept my challenge to post articles that address the greivences it addresses. But you won't because you know there is validity in their arguments.

Not really. The bottle can't explode until you cap the bottle.

It's basic 8th grade chemistry.

2Al + 2NaOH + 6H2O -> 2Na+ + 2[Al(OH)4]- + 3H2

All you need is common houshold items generally found in your mom's kitchen. Draino from under the sink(NaOH), aluminium foil (Al) and water (H2O).

As you can see by the equation this chemical reaction produces a lot of hydrogen gas (H2)

When you put a cap on the bottle the hydrogen gas pressure builds up in the bottle until.... BOOM!

The thing is, there is still going to be some lye left over when the bottle bursts. Since sodium hydroxide is very caustic, if it gets in your eyes you are going to have a really bad day. Wear safety goggles. And no smoking.

As I read this, I'm thinking...

"Thanks for the chemistry lesson."

...And...

Damn! Been a looooooong time since I played with my chemistry set. Maybe I need to break out the periodic table and have a refresher! LOL

As I've already pointed out, those who oppose this movement are only going by what they see in the news from the NYC protests; you're not looking at the other protests that aren't on Wall Street.

Is that so? So I'm not paying any attention to the mountain of refuse that is inhabiting part of the Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston right now? I'm not paying any attention to the theft, the heroin distribution, the rampant disorder and uncleanliness that's going on in Beantown? Or is that $2 Million that the City of Boston has spent on dealing with those morons nothing more than Thomas Menino's way of stocking his own re-election fund?

When you have apposing voices lets listen to the voice that produces wealth for our country and ignore the voice that is a little slurred by drugs and lack of sleep, who is wanting us to give them more drugs and not wake them up so early.

What would that be from the TEA Party people?

Well, there's this guy:

YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.

You know, I've actually tried to do that.... The only problem is that I can't seem to find them. Occupy Worcester (MA), has less than 100 individuals "attending", despite being based in the second largest (population) city in New England. A city that boasts nearly a dozen colleges and universities, including Liberal bastions like Clark and Becker and schools where the kids come out with massive debt bills like Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). Instead of "Occupying" the Worcester Common (right behind city hall) these people have relegated themselves to Lake Park, which is literally about as far outside of where ANYONE in the City would ever see them as possible. They didn't even have the balls to resist when the Worcester PD threw them off the Common the one night they attempted to stay there.

I mock the Occupiers the same way I mock the Tea Partiers.... Give me a call when you people are ready to pick up the pitchforks, torches, and rifles. Until you're actually ready to DO something, get the hell out of the way of those of us who have lives we have to deal with. If you block the street in front of my car you're going to get run over, and I might just back up to make sure I got the job done right the first time.

There were only about 100 or so people who showed up at my local Occupy rally, too. But it hasn't stopped me from supporting them in other ways, i.e., getting to know others in my area who are involved and sharing ideas on how to focus their message, getting people to do speaking engagements to address the issues we all face, sending emails or Tweets concerning the movement, etc. Like you, initially I stood back and watched as things unfolded but after researching each point and finding more indepth information on the issues, I decided I could no longer just stand by and do nothing because I began to realize that I, too, am affected by the decisions made by a Congress that has become greatly influenced by the clout and power of corporate entities.

Would there have been enough hydrogen to produce a secondary explosion from the hydrogen if an open flame had been burning in the kitchen?

Just curious.

You have Internet access, right? There are streaming videos from nearly every city that has hosted atleast one Occupy rally. All you have to do is go to the Occupytogether.org website, find any city (preferrably a large city like Denver, Chicago, LA/Oakland, Seattle, or Portland, ME, to name a few) and watch and listen to what these people are saying. There's really no excuse for you staying "trapped" or limited to events in just your city or focusing strictly on events in NYC. Again, these Occupy protest rallies are popping up EVERYWHERE! If you really want to know what's going on, you don't have to drive 200-300 miles to see events unfold for yourself. You're really just a few keystrokes and a mouse click or two away.

A fine example of what I'm talking about; clearly, you've ignored all the racist signs and other visceral language used at some Tea Party rallies before they got their foot in Congress. Not saying that the entire movement was like that, but even Herman Cain has recently admitted that there are some racist elements among the Tea Party. If he can admit it, why can't you? And he's Black!!!

Where did Herman Cain say the Tea Party was racist?

The only racism I've seen is coming from White Liberals against Herman Cain. Cain is actually a Tea Party favorite.

Well, we're not dealing with a bunch of rocket scientists here. And, you're right, it's not impossible that someone had the bright idea to pull some kind of stunt to arouse anger among the ranks of the OWS'ers, so as to get the revolution really rolling.

Let's not act like something like that has never happened before.

I'm not, and I've never claimed it was someone who was specifically for or against the Occupy movement who threw or planted the makeshift explosive. Nor have I claimed that it couldn't have been a plant. I'm just said the odds are against someone attempting to sabatog their own movement just to insight rage against the machine. Not impossible, not out of the question...but highly unlikely.

But regardless of who did it, I hope the police catch him and throw the book at him for the simply reason that somebody could have gotten hurt from their wrecklessness and stupidity.

He didn't say the Tea Party was racist. He said there were racist elements within the Tea Party movement...big difference.

seriously?? Dude you really do need therapy for your anger and hatred issues....

That's my girl. :)

pitchforks, torches and rifles....running folks down with cars??? really? If some random group of people protesting something makes you "that" angry, Id be heading straight to the doctor to find out why. I mean, you can think occupiers and any other protestors are just full of batsnot and wasting their time, but dang... youd think they shot the mans dog or something. I can think of a few sorts of "protesters" or "groups" that I think are full of it .... but to be that angry? Just makes me wonder why...

you and conservative disagree on pretty much everything imaginable, but I dont believe hes ever wanted to run you over? (LOL at least he hasnt voiced that opinion)

Then lets see where he said there are "racist elements within the Tea party movement", and especially its context.

The racism against Cain has, as usual, come from the Left. He remains a Tea party favorite.

Still no arrests? No lead? No one saw the car that drove by or the person who tossed the "bomb".

48 hours now have gone by. You'd think that there'd be an APB all over Maine looking for the "Right Wing" culprits. :lamo

The right wing doesn't like the OWS protests very much.

PORTLAND — Occupy Maine protesters say Sunday morning's attack with a chemical explosive has left them with a mixture of anxiety and resolve.

"We are more motivated to keep doing what we're doing," said Stephanie Wilburn, of Portland, who was sitting near where the chemical mixture in a Gatorade bottle was tossed at 4 a.m. Sunday. "They have heard us and we're making a difference."

Wilburn said she was startled and briefly lost hearing in her left ear when the device exploded beneath a table about 10 feet away. Wilburn's hearing returned and police said no injuries were reported.

Portland police Sgt. Glen McGary said the bomb was thrown into the camp’s kitchen, a tarped area where food is cooked and served. Protest organizers said the explosion lifted a large table about a foot off the ground.

"There was no fire . . . We had a good 20 feet of thick smoke rolling out from under the table," Wilburn said. They could see the "G" on the 24-ounce bottle and its orange cap, as well as bits of silver metal, she said.

Or perhaps the bomb was thrown by some one on the left who is concerned that the cost to the city of the Occupy movement will force the city to reduce services to the city's most needy.

Almost a month into the "Occupy Wall Street" protests, mutterings and murmurings are being heard among officials in US cities that are playing host. Their beef: The cost of ensuring public safety and providing sanitation is rising into the millions.

Police overtime alone amounted to $1.9 million during three weeks of anti-Wall Street demonstrations in New York, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said last week. In Boston, the tab for police overtime is estimated to reach $2 million if the protest continues through the end of October, said the city council president this week. And that doesn't include other costs, such as extra trash pickup, portable toilets, and even electricity being supplied to the protesters' tent cities.

......................................................................

But as the Occupy protests continue with no end in sight, the worry lines are deepening on the faces of some city officials.
“I don’t think it’s the activists’ intention to break the public treasury here, but that’s what’s happening,” says Stephen Murphy, Boston City Council president, in a phone interview. “We’re concerned about making the city’s streets, playgrounds, and parks clean and safe, but each of those may wind up taking less because of these protests.”

I thinking it would have to be confined somehow for the hydrogen to explode rather than just flame out.

For instance, instead of capping the bottle you could put a balloon on the top and make a lighter than air hydrogen balloon. If an open flame touches that balloon it will make a boom louder than an M-80.

Just checking in... I guess all hope of finding those radical right wingers who threw the chemical bomb is all but lost.

I find it an interesting headline grabbing victimization story though. Maybe next time, they'll claim some right winger did something else even more heinous.

I wonder if the story is word smithed? Was there any pictures taken of the explosion by the victims or police? It would be nice to see them if they exsisted. Most people have cellphones with a camera.

A crime that has not been solved? Unthinkable! It must be a fake story.

Common sense... an alleged "bomb" is thrown where there are camera's constantly rolling, hundreds or thousands of people around, and no one saw enough to find them. I guess you're one of those guys that has to step in the steaming pile of cow **** to test and see if it smells or not. It truely is amazing and unthinkable.... ie.,the story and the claim was and is bull****.
