HS Student Refuses To Recite Mexican Pledge Of Allegiance

That is what bigots and racists do... they also use terms like "anchor baby". It is all an Appeal to Emotion.

Sometimes it is just too easy. I say "jump". Liberals say "How high" ?

The girl did the right thing. The teacher, and school, need to put down the tamales.

Moderator's Warning:
Let's tone it down a bit. Future personal attacks will be infracted.

Right... that is my reputation here. Dude, you are a clown that just got his ass handed to him. Go play on the monkey bars "sensei".

Let me guess. You are "an American", and that means you are relevent ?

I got so much bling on right now I am starting to look like Mister T. No more. Please.

The girl was correct.

Really? I took French and was by no means the best and we wrote in French all the time... in fact I still can after thinking about it (in French) for a bit, now 20 years later.

My high school Spanish classes were incredibly elementary. I learned more in the college ones, but it wasn't only 2 semesters. I can't recall ever having to write much of anything in Spanish except translating words or phrases.

Nevermind. It wasn't nice. :)

I honestly do not see what the problem is. If I were given an assignment to write about Hitler, that would not be saying I support him.

How about if you were asked to recite a pledge of allegiance to him?

Why did this even make the news? What's the big deal? So she didn't want to say Mexico's pledge. So she takes, maybe, a ding in her grade for it. Big deal.

Why do people always get outraged by stupid issues like these? Seriously, who cares? It's up to the teacher to set the assignments as they see fit. The Mexican Pledge is in Spanish, so it is relevant. It's not as if the assignment was so outlandish that it had absolutely nothing to do with Spanish class. Also, they are just words. Simply reciting words does not indicate ones allegiance to one country or another. Hell, when I was in grade school, we had to recite the US pledge and had no clue what we were even reciting. It was just that thing that you recite before the day starts. This particular student refused to do the assignment and as such she should receive a failing grade for that particular assignment. End of story. I don't know why people have to politicize every single ****ing thing under the sun and turn it into a question of patriotism. Have things gotten so bad in this country that people are going to get outraged by stupid insignificant crap like this? If you don't agree with the curriculum, take your kid out of the class or get a degree and teach your own class the way you want to.

For me, it would depend on the relevance and context of why I was being asked to recite it.

I can sing a few hymns in Latin....that's about all. I retained almost nothing and of course, we never even tried to master pronunciation. Dead language, blah, blah, blah. But it's been useful, even so. Mastering a second language to any degree forces the student to grasp the concept of tenses, etc.

Back in the day, at the peak of my powers, I could read fairly easy material in Latin...I never did build up a huge vocabulary.

I think it's more than just getting a ding in her grade. The teacher was asking her students to pledge allegiance to a different country. Some people take their pledges very seriously.

The original issue was like the bump in the shopping cart wheel. Not a big deal until you start pushing it all around the store.

What we illuminated here, IMMHO, was the continued stupidity and hypocrisy of the liberal left on all issues immigration and Mexican illegals. Like a pile of fresh dung. The flies come swarming pretty quick.

The only thing I can think of that might give me pause here is if the class is role-playing. If a student is playing the part of a Nazi in an educational reenactment or theatrical play, then that makes sense. Other than that, what's the point other than to stir up controversy?

Those people should lighten up. A pledge doesn't contain magic words that suddenly makes one have allegiance to a different country when recited.

How on earth do you gather that from the story? It was part of an assignment. They were to read the Mexican Pledge of Allegiance. That does not translate to pledging allegiance to another country. How is that different from reading it? Listening to it? Or can't they ask students to do that either? Good grief.

I am not outraged....but I am annoyed. Remember, the student was not just asked to say the pledge; she also had to study up on "hispanic culture" and Mexican Independence. Even if she was being asked to do so in Spanish, I object because I infer the teacher had a subagenda of promoting the idea that being a citizen of Mexico is the same as being a citizen of the US.

Funny, I would say it is the other way around.

Are you actually that partisan? I am not sure if Pinkie is Liberal or not, but I certainly am not.

I have no idea what you mean by "bling". Is that your version of saying you own me, or something?

The girl did what she thought best... good for her. I support what she did.

And yes, I am an American though I don't live there.
And no, that does not make "me" relevant but it makes what I have to say as a voting taxpaying citizen regarding matters that happen in the USA relevant.

Maybe I was lucky... I really learned the language well and we more than prepared to go speak French in France with the French. :)

What if they gave you an assignment to recite Hitler's speech on the Final Solution?

I can appreciate all of that, but this is not about your right to vote. Nor is anyone questoning your right to an opinion. Nor did anyone question anyone else's right to an opinion.

What was questioned was validity, as opinions were being made with no supporting basis. And as we see with many of our liberal firends, they made a choice to attack posters personally who had opinions contrary to theirs. That is how it is. It is what we expect. It happens daily here.

It will happen tomorrow here as well. Whether you joined in the personal attacks or not, I will not bother to go back and look.

Well, I'm not geography whiz, but I don't believe you are correct.

If, by "largest" you mean highest population, I'd guess Spain is first. Spain is also the place where Spanish first developed and therefore, has the oldest "Spanish" culture.

Mexico has about 112 million people compared to 46 million in Spain.
