WASHINGTON -- President Obama is sending about 100 U.S. troops to central Africa to help local forces battle the Lord's Resistance Army, a rebel group that the administration says has waged a campaign of murder, rape and kidnapping for more than two decades. Obama said Friday the troops will act as advisers in efforts to hunt down rebel leader Joseph Kony but will not engage in combat except in self-defense, according to a letter to Congress that was obtained by Fox News.
The White House says the first troops arrived in Uganda on Wednesday. Ultimately, they will also deploy in South Sudan, the Central African Republic and Congo.

Are we spreading democracy again?

We gotta get em over there before they get us over here

This is one crazy president.

He's saving innocents from the religious right loonies.

Maybe while they're there one of them can beat the living hell out of the "witch doctors" who are castrating and murdering children in the name of "good luck and prosperity".

We've been sending special ops teams to train foreign militaries for decades. Sounds like business as usual to me.

Good. The Lord's Resistance Army is one of the most disgusting terrorist organizations in the world. We should have helped these countries crush this despicable group a long time ago.

Because last time we had a mission like this it ended in ****ing disaster.

This mission is entirely different.... For one the troops are only to act as advisers, not the case in Somalia, and secondly the size, scale, and execution are entirely different.

And Libya was going to be over with in a matter of days.

Ya that is also completely different, George Lucas also said the new Star Wars would be good, see what I did there? By the way I don't think anyone said Libya would be over in days.

Yes, it's always "different" when it's your guy.

American forces will be transitioning to a "support and assist" role in the international coalition within a matter of days, he promised. U.S. ground troops will not be sent into Libya, he stressed.

WASHINGTON -- The four-day air assault in Libya will soon achieve the objectives of establishing a no-fly zone and averting a massacre of civilians by Moammar Gadhafi's troops, President Barack Obama said Tuesday, adding that despite squabbling among allies, the United States will hand off control of the operation to other countries within days.

"When this transition takes place, it is not going to be our planes that are maintaining the no-fly zone," the president said at a news conference in El Salvador as he neared the end of a Latin American trip overshadowed by events in Libya. "It is not going to be our ships that are necessarily enforcing the arms embargo. That's precisely what the other nations are going to do."

Like Buttah

I was seriously hoping Obama would spread us too thin over more toast before the end of his presidency. . . oh well! So much for having a peaceful future in which my children don't have to be boxed and shipped off overseas.

Uh huh. I can only pray you are right.

I'm gonna second this. Doesn't mean we can't screw this up, but I do not see Somalia parallels at this point.

I am also not against this move. Not quite for it either. I was SF and Special Ops many moons ago. Properly deployed, they can take care of themselves.

Here is why I am not necessarily against it. In the early 90's, after the Russians got their butts out of Afghanistan, we igored the place. There were a small covey of CIA and intel folks who said we needed to stay more active there, precisely because they saw the opportunity for the rise of Arab Muslim jihadists in that vacuum. Bush the Elder did not pay attention. Neither did Clinton. And the rest is history ... still being written, but at such a cost.

I do not know that we are going to get all the info on these assclowns in Africa, and what is up. But it is entirely logical that this needs to be nipped in the bud now, with us playing a role. This ain't our Daddy's war, or world, anymore.

Obama said "its a matter of days, not weeks" ...... although I doubt even he believed that.

Well, all I can say is "it's about damn time". A smidge too late for rwanda genocide...so many have already died. They don't have oil, either. So why send help now? No clue. But I am glad someone FINALLY is.

Obama is gonna free his people!!!!! :3 /ass

Religious Right? What's that? :lamo

LRA is a "christian" terrorist group. They're basically Al-Qaeda with a different book.

Lots of OIL in the Sudan. You know it is never about freedom, liberty, democracy, or human rights. Never!
