At Rick Perry’s Texas hunting spot, camp’s old racially charged name lingered

He didn't name it and has spoken against the name and called the name offensive. I see no reason to fault the man for hunting in a place that formerly had a racist name and I see no reason to not believe him when he says the name is offensive to him. This is a silly non-issue that is only meant to distract from the real issues.

yeah, it's texas, after all. to be expected.

Oh, so Texan's are racists? Is that ALL Texans? or just those who disagree with you politically? What a silly statement.

I've been around the country and when I lived in Brooklyn that is where I met some of the most racist people out of anywhere.

Something out of nothing? Seriously lady, you come in here and broad brush a statement about the residents of an entire state based on some politically correct naming of a piece of land that the media want's to blow out of proportion to damage a GOP candidate, then when you are called on your incredibly silly assertion about Texans you come back and try the old 'I didn't say that' crap, while saying it again!

What a joke...Are you even for real?

Anyone hunting on that land instead of boycotting it IS supporting the person(s) that will not change the racist name.

I won't call those people racists that use the land, but they are most certainly supporting racists by doing so. Their choice, but not a very good one in my opinion.

Lol reminds me of what me and my wife have to tell each other sometimes. One time we were talking to her aunt when she started talking about the death panels and how Obama Care has a clause in it stating that people will receive care based on their current age and value to society. When my wife was about to go on correcting her I nudged her and whispered "We live in Louisiana dear. Get used to it".

Paint Creek, Tex. — In the early years of his political career, Rick Perry began hosting fellow lawmakers, friends and supporters at his family’s secluded West Texas hunting camp, a place known by the name painted in block letters across a large, flat rock standing upright at its gated entrance.

Rick Perry family’s hunting camp still known to many by old racially charged name - The Washington Post

If you do not know what name is on the rock, check the link. What impact will this have on the campaign?

Hopefully people will be smart enough to realize that this is a nonissue or else we should be changing the name of NAACP.

Some on his Dad painted over "niggerhead" years ago and if the paint is fading and it can be seen again repaint the damn rock.

I am not a fan of Perry but is he responsible for faded paint.

Get a life you racist dumb-asses who are making this an issue, you're only diverting attention from Obama's failures.

How do you figure? He is not responsible for anything that he didn't have to do with, this being one of them. Where would he be responsible for something someone painted on a rock 50 years ago? Responsible in either direction, for it showing or not showing?

i think he missed a word here. ;-)

He is responsible for the condition of his property. If someone painted "Nigger" on my house, you can be sure I'd paint over it, and if the paint faded, I'd paint over it again

it's not perry's property.

Nobody's pretending, dude. The information on the use of the term "niggerhead" is all over the internet. If people insist upon finding nonsense reasons to incite hateful issues then they will. This is an idiotic reason to lambast somebody. It's a crappy name, but he didn't pick it. When the name was selected it described the area accurately based on the common uses I quoted (that came from Wikipedia, btw).

I believe it, you aren't pretending, you really are just this smart. Funny watching you describe "niggerhead" as a "technical term" when it's obviously just an old, once commonly used slang colloquialism of racist origin and intent. Oh, but you read about it on Wikipedia. Hilarious.

Par for the course? Unbelievable....You just can't stop yourself can you?

I only pointed out that the word "niggerhead" was used for many, many years to describe many, many things. The word "nigger" has become forbidden...a high insult against a group of people who, ironically enough, use essentially the exact same word to address each other in certain circles. The fact is, the Perry's didn't create the word, didn't own the land, didn't name the camp, and have never acted in such a way as to suggest that they utilize that word or condemn blacks in any way.

This entire issue is an overblown reaction to a stupid word, the use and meaning of which is only questionably racist at best. (Do some googling yourself, perhaps?). It isn't as though people are looking at rocks and deeming them inferior because they meet the description applied to a "niggerhead" cropping of rocks.

Sometimes, we go way too far in our efforts to avoid offense. When we're throwing down over terms like "food stamps", "black hole", "black head", "white wash", and any other combination of color-centric word pairings somebody should really halt the discussion for a second so we can re-evaluate how far we're taking things. Do I think it's smart in this day and age to call anything "nigger _______"? No. Do I think that any offense or hatred were meant or displayed in this particular scenario? No.

This is much ado about a non-issue. And here's the unintended consequence people will set into motion: The more you scream about racist intent the more people will find racist intent. You'll encourage anger and hostility to fester and set people off against each other. It perpetuates a cycle of ingnorance and intolerance and lends nothing to the discussion. Instead of jumping to idiotic conclusions and calling somebody a racist maybe we should start having a real discussion.

"Hey Perry, Perry's family. Let's talk about the "Niggerhead" rock. What's up with that?"

Probably a lot more condusive to advancing the discussion than:

"Hey Perry, Perry's family. That rock is racist and you're racists for leaving it there. You're insensitive to racial issues and no self-respecting black person should ever support you."

End the vitriol and hostile rhetoric and be a part of the change you want to see. Pretending to take the moral high road by jumping on the "that's racist" bandwagon is just being part of the problem without providing a solution.

I can't stand Perry and will go out of my way to vote against him if he gets the GOP nomination. But this is really pathetic.

Isn't it funny how democrats behave in their private lives........Perry was a democrat back in the day when that rock wasn't painted. I'll bet Robert Byrd would have been proud to be a charter member of that hunting club. He could go hunting with his sheet on.
