Rebel forces and armed civilians are rounding up thousands of black Libyans and migrants from sub-Sahara Africa, accusing them of fighting for ousted strongman Moammar Gadhafi and holding them in makeshift jails across the capital.

Virtually all of the detainees say they are innocent migrant workers, and in most cases there is no evidence that they are lying. But that is not stopping the rebels from placing the men in facilities like the Gate of the Sea sports club, where about 200 detainees — all black — clustered on a soccer field this week, bunching against a high wall to avoid the scorching sun.

Aladdin Mabrouk, a spokesman for Tripoli's military council, said no one knows how many people have been detained in the city, but he guessed more than 5,000. While no central registry exists, he said neighborhood councils he knows have between 200 and 300 prisoners each. The city of 1.8 million has dozens of such groups.

This comes as no real surprise to me.

Why doesn't it surprise you the rebels would do such a thing?

Gaddifi used mostly African mercenaries to fight for him, effectively making them the other.

This really worries me about the rebel forces.....

Makes you proud that we supported these assholes, huh?

Kinda like Egypt, where we encouraged Muslim extremists to oust a U.S. friendly government.

i'm not sure why this is being offered up as a racist issue.... after reading the whole article, i didn't come away with the notion of this being an race-based issue at all... even though it's being sold to us here as exactly that.

Carter did the same with Iran.

Some people just desperately want to be liked and feel narcissistic enough that their wonderfulness will lead to a better, safer, friendlier world. The bad guys, in their eyes, are their political opponents at home.

But, but, I thought the rebels were the freedom-loving good guys! How could anyone have possibly foreseen that the conflict might not have been as morally clear-cut as Western governments tried to portray it? Clearly NATO did the right thing by poking its nose in this conflict in which it had no stake and no moral authority.

This isn't really news. It's been going on for quite awhile. Once it was rumored that sub-Saharan Africans were being used by Gadaffi as mercenaries, they essentially become "the other."

i wonder why the rebels would be on the lookout for black mercs....

maybe because of this?.....Gaddafi recruits

i think we can all understand going after those who deemed it necessary to gun down protesters.. and really, it could be much worse than detaining them and giving trials... they could have acted like Ghaddafis black thugs and just gunned them down.

but meh, it's all good... people looking for racism will find it, despite any other factors involved in an issue.

take it up with your President... it was his call all the way.

i'm not fond of the idea of going after libya myself... but i didn't have a say in the matter and neither did any of my representatives.

I think I'll withhold any sort of judgement here for awhile.

Well its none of our business to be involved anyways cuz its their country and their civil war and their revolution.

Kinda like Egypt, where we encouraged Muslim extremists to oust a U.S. friendly government.
Except we took no sides and remained very quiet on this one. One could argue we wanted Mubarack to stay in power.....
But anyways same as above: its their country, its their revolution...

I don't disagree. We should have never gotten involved in Libya.

Didn't take sides, eh? Right! Obama was totally silent about Egypt.

Oh boy, here we go. Kick out the dictator, replace him with something worse. Well, hopefully it'll get better after things have settled down for a year or so.

Never know what you're gonna get with rebellion.

Some folks were telling us that the emerging leadership, in Egypt, would be the Muslim Brotherhood. But, the, "we're smarter than you are", folks said that wasn't going to happen.

Exactly my point. What did Libya get? Libya got several speeches and "Gadaffi its time to step down" oh yea and they got a **** ton of cruise missiles! What did Syria get? A speech here and there.... What did the Saudis get? Naaa nothing we were silent on that one, DEAD SILENT on that one! What did Egypt get? Silence.. Sure a few talking points, but nothing serious... Sure we will support a "orderly transition to democracy" only if its done are way and we get our candidates up there...

No, the "we're smarter than you folks" said it didn't matter.

You are naive and don't know anything about middle east history, especially the Muslim brotherhood. Nor do you understand war psychology.

Comes as no surprise to me either as Khadfy was well known for using Black Africans against the people of Libya. We don't know what is being done, but if they are rounding them up to send them home, I have absolutely no problem with that... Of course, you love Khadaffy, so of course you would oppose anyone who oppses them. How cares about freeing the Libyan... or Chinese... or any other people from an oppressive dictatorship...
