AP-GfK Poll: Obama faces trouble with key voters

This, along with the next year for Obama is key. If the republicans put up someone who can't appeal to the country as a whole, then they don't have a shot.

that, of course, is precisely why the Carter White House was overjoyed to learn that it was running against a far-right-wing movie actor.

in reality, 2012 will be mostly a referendum on Obama's stewardship. The Republican Candidate just has to look moderately sane and remember to ask "where are the jobs?" every ten minutes.

That depends a great deal on the economic conditions available in which to create jobs. Lots of folks are great bakers but if you only give them an oven that heats up to 175 degrees, its really difficult to judge their abilities.

the question was did he oversell himself. not, what is his excuse for failure.

Obama's approval rating has been dropping. I really don't see him winning reelection if this trend continues. The economy will be the defining issue in 2012 and if the economic condition of the country has not improved than Obama has no shot at reelection. I think Obama won the election largely because of Bush's low approval rating, the state of the economy, and the voting populace not willing to trust Republicans with the economy anymore. The same feelings will apply towards Obama when he tries to win reelection.

precisely. I don't think you could say that either party has "won" any election since 2006; the opposing party has just been "fired".

I gave Obama a bit more credit in the beginning because being a President during a recession (a depression for many) is not easy.

But... he has caved on many of his campaign promises, and opportunities for real "hope and change" have fallen short.

I treat him as any other crony President now. Although, I still think he was better than Bush.

Since '06 we haven't even had elections, just 'referendums' on the failed policies of each party on a biannual basis.

the question was did he oversell himself. not, what is his excuse for failure.

No. The question is better and more fairly framed to take in all the factors determining his success or failure. Unless of course you simply want to play partisan games for narrow ideological purposes then to hell with all the other factors and full speed ahead with the Inquisition.

Just because somebody isn't too psyched about Obama doesn't mean they would ever vote for one of these total nuts the GOP is putting forward... For example, a lot of people are mad at him for caving to the GOP Tea Party over whether or not the rich ought to have to chip in to help reduce the deficits. That doesn't mean they're like going to go out and vote for Bachmann.

Perry will project, the following... statesman and the politician/candidate.

A solidly economical president which will bring back jobs

Promote strong defense/Promote healthy international relationships

Encourage, persuade by argument in Congress...another thing, Perry loves guns

I think it's funny that most liberals and partisan Democrats are rationalizing this with "the GOP is crazy and Obama will win because there isn't a R in front of his name."

In a normal cycle yes. But if the economy remains stagnant or worsens, I think Americans will vote for a change regardless.

I'm just not sure that things are at an "anything but Obama" level yet. I believe he has a chance even if the economy is stagnant. If it worsens then I agree that it won't take an overwhelming candidate to beat Obama. I'm not impressed with the GOP field so far though. Obama has some explaining to do. I don't think that things are so bad that the one with the most charisma won't win the election. The media age we are in makes that the number one factor, unfortunately.

Go ahead, nominate Ms. "I'll have gas prices under $2.00 on Elvis's birthday!"

Charisma doesn't pay the bills. His numbers are faltering in the middle... the critical ground.

They are faltering. But if the GOP nominates someone who doesn't have a strong fiscal background and policy to offer, I think Obama is savvy enough to make them look foolish, if they don't do that all on their own. This is my bias probably coming through, and I am not overly happy with Obama, but I honestly don't think what the GOP is preaching is the solution either.

I'd like to see all of this "class warfare" discussion scuttled and hear some ideas about tariffs so American companies can be competitive again.

Perry will not tailor his platform to the highest polling questionnaire responses.

Basically, its gonna be something more or less like this...

This is what I believe, I think it's good for our country and if you don't like it, feel free to vote for someone else... like Obama

Let me ask you this....Do you think Obama is guilty of over selling his ability to improve jobs creation???

That depends a great deal on the economic conditions available in which to create jobs. Lots of folks are great bakers but if you only give them an oven that heats up to 175 degrees, its really difficult to judge their abilities.

no, actually, you will notice, the question is whether or not Obama overhyped his ability to reduce unemployment; thus resulting in a rather extreme disparity between promises and results.

I'm just not sure that things are at an "anything but Obama" level yet.

Ron Paul polled within the margin of error.

Yeah, we're there. And all the charisma in the world won't fix a 9% official unemployment rate - people will happily pick someone they like less who knows how to create jobs.

The two main contenders for the Republican Nomination are Perry and Romney; neither of whom fit your depiction.

why? do you not like poor people?

Most people still have jobs.

Perry is too evangelical. Romney has RomneyCare.

why? do you not like poor people?

No, it's because it's nothing more than rich people whining about poor people not "paying their fair share". As if that would miraculously fix the credit based economy.

I think it also goes the other way, perhaps even more so.

I think it also goes the other way, perhaps even more so.

It's one side saying, "We can't afford to pay more taxes." and the other side saying, "We refuse to pay more taxes. We were going to create jobs use automation to save on labor costs with that money."

The emperor Obama has no clothes. The transparency of the oligarchy and our sham USA democracy has become all too apparent.

- Oil Companies blatantly hiding and censoring the U.S. media after spills ...

- Nuclear Power blatantly censoring the poisons and dangers from the free world ...

- Military warmongers hiding behind Nobel Prizes and muppet TV news hosts hiding their slaughter behind Newspeak and words like "freedom" ...

Most people still have jobs.

True, but how would you like to be one of the 9.1% who don't? Who do you think they will vote for?

Black unemployment rate: Highest since 1984 - Sep. 2, 2011

Black unemployment: Highest in 27 years
By Annalyn Censky @CNNMoney September 2, 2011: 3:13 PM ET

The unemployment rate for blacks surged to 16.7% in August, its highest rate since 1984, the Labor Department reported Friday.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The August jobs report was dismal for plenty of reasons, but perhaps most striking was the picture it painted of racial inequality in the job market.

Black unemployment surged to 16.7% in August, its highest level since 1984, while the unemployment rate for whites fell slightly to 8%, the Labor Department reported.
