WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress may be able to approve the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Taiwan even if President Barack Obama should object, a Republican senator said Tuesday.

The United States is legally required to supply Taiwan with defensive weapons. However, authorizing the multibillion-dollar, long-pending sale of the 66 planes would anger China, which regards the self-governing island as part of its territory.

Few people think Obama will approve the sale. Congress has to check the President on this and ensure the sale goes ahead. With China continuing to moderinze its military, Taiwan needs a credible defense.

66 brand spanking new F-16' is all good, but I think is more worried about the US 7th fleet parked off the coast.. :)

Certainly, Congress has the power to pass a law to this effect and then override a veto.

Why? Taiwan should take care of itself. Do we really want to get in it with China over Taiwan?

We're going to "get in it" with China eventually, and anyone that doesn't see that coming is fooling themselves. Sun Tzu would say, hit them when they're weak, not when they're strong.. :)

Mutually assured destruction.

And if I were you, I'd honestly be more worried about the Russians. Putins got a long term game in the works thats going to have the whole of Europe by the balls while you can't even approve a ****ing budget.

Peaceful reunification with China is Taiwan's best option. Unless Taiwan gets nuclear weapons they will not be capable of stopping China in the event of invasion and war will only make Taiwan's future prospects upon reunification worse. Rather than arming a secessionist territory to prevent China from eroding American imperial power we should spend that money on more humanitarian purposes.

Congress cannot bypass the President on this.

Of course not but if someone comes knocking wanting to buy our products, we sell it to them. China would do the same. If Iran asks China for planes or nuclear technology, China is going to sell it to them. (or just give it to them).

Should we sell jet fighters to Iran?

China got US stealth secrets from Pakistan without regard to the US. So what's the big deal about selling the F-16's to Taiwan? It just creates more issues for China to deal with militarily in their own back yard.

Taiwan wants to BUY the weapons, not accept them as a gift. If you think supporting the U.S.'s allies in this region is not in the long-term interest of the United States, you have a serious case of ostrich-syndrome...

I suppose you aren't aware of the fact that relations between Taiwan and China are actually improving.

Whoo!

Taiwanese do not want reunification (sic) with China. Taiwan is a democracy that generally respects human rights. China has no legal rights to Taiwan and it is clear that Taiwan's people want nothing to do with political union with China. Leave it to you to take the side of thugs... again...

Ahhh Taiwan's pro-China party wins 3 of 5 mayoral seats - International Business Times

Tensions between the two countries have been easing due to increased trade and how China treats Hong Kong

I think he will, what's the indication that he won't?

Even more surprising is how we continue to accept lopsided trade agreements with China, and purchase more and more of their goods (despite the many, many human rights abuses, misrepresentations and substitutions of trade goods, and so many other things that should persuade us not to)

Between the governments, yes. But the people of Taiwan are actually getting more and more distrustful of China and expasperated by the behavior and attitude of its people.

China does not want to go to war with their best customer, and they don't want to destroy someone that owes them as much money as we do. Think about it for a second: they destroy the US, nobody buys their cheap crap, and they lose on their investments.

They're not idiots.

So you aren't for free trade?
