[h=1]Pentagon report: China closer to matching modern militaries[/h]
China's military buildup has made impressive gains that pushed the Communist Party-controlled People’s Liberation Army closer to matching modern militaries, according to the Pentagon’s annual report to Congress made public Wednesday.

Can I get a GREAT BIG THANK YOU from everyone for our Darling Corporate pigs at the trough that allowed this to happen out of GREED...
wont be long when america is going to condemn corporations for putting the entire country at risk for a buck

They have four times our population, I don't see how anyone would ever think we'd maintain military superiority forever. Population brings economic strength, and economic strength brings military strength.

Companies selling products to China is an inevitable result of capitalism. It cannot be avoided.

Short of fracturing like Russia did, they're going to run the world. Get used to it.

China is going to become the next super power without a doubt.

There's a good chance, but a lot can wrong for them before that happens. They are going to have a wee problem maitaining an authoritarian government as the population grows wealthier and becomes even more capitalistic. And it's not unlikely that they could crash their economy in the next 10-15 years.

We well eventually fight a war with China. Once they think they can get around or defeat our technology, they will.

Bank on it

I don't think so, for the same reason we never fought a war with the USSR.

The error in that is you assume that other cultures and other nations have the same values, same motivations and use the same logic that we do.

You don't think China values not being turned into a lake of molten lava?

In addition to that, don't forget that China holds over a trillion dollars in U.S. debt or that we're China's second biggest export market.

A - The people and businessmen of China have no real strength or ability to affect the Chinese government. That entity will allow them to play around at a semblance of a free market for as long as it benefits the government

Don't believe in that bull****. The ruthless bastards will continue to do business with us and other nations because it brings capital into the country, which they need to *build* the modernization of the army/country. Once the opportunity of superiority exists, they will go ape**** against us.

I think *may* be a tad paranoid.

This is your fault, with your welfare greed, your socialist education system, your dumbing down of America, your collectivist policies and doctrines.

You sure? I can think of a few things that would throw a monkey wrench into that. For one, economic prosperity does eventually level off. At that point, there's going to be serious political infighting if not massive revolts. The China that comes out of that is going to be radically different from the China we see today. All bets are off really. Second, China really doesn't want to be a super power, it honestly would be happy being a Japan-esque kind of power. That tends to come with all sorts of outflows to support all kinds of countries and organizations. China does not want to pay the kind of money America does to the UN. A major default in the US could dramatically hurt Chinese industry causing massive ripples throughout the country. At the same time they can't keep feeding the US debt addiction. Hard choices are coming to China and it's going to be interesting to see what happens. Any of those could derail a super power status.

The way the USSR was kept in toe was that they feared overwhelming retaliation that would come from any attack.

This is why we must maintain our technological advances in our military's advances in all areas and go even farther to secure our secrecy.

With the exception of having a weak kneed person at the helm we are far and away ahead of all others in terms of ability.

Politicians have made us look weak because they have placed limits on our military when dealing with enemy forces.

When dealing with insurgents they only give up when they are dead, and we are too limited in ways to go after them. They use civilians as shields and we back off.. Civilians don't like the bad gut either but they fear them.

We have to convince the good people we are there to help them and if they point out the bad guys we will protect them. Then go about killing all the bad guys.

Again, greedy corporations are at blame for everything. Makes sense.
As for the Chinese military, they are far off, maybe a decade or two before they become a fully modern military. Their aircrafts are very old, from Cold War-era, and their army is underequipped with outdated weapons, though their navy is rapidly modernizing. I don't see it happening in a few years, maybe a few decades

If we are diligent in our pursuit of both offensive and defensive capabilities we will always remain ahead of China militarily holding them at bay until maybe we can have leaders, both there and here that see the futility of war.

We could do that now if our Governments were more sensible and realistic in dealing with reality.

Actually, it is not. Realistically, all that is needed to deter attack is an overwhelming nuclear response, which can be maintained on the cheap (relatively speaking).

The rest of the military-industrial complex -- the surface ships, the fighter aircraft, the tanks, the artillery -- is only needed (in such large amounts) for projecting power into localized areas, something the founding fathers were opposed to, and something that has turned around and bit us on the ass numerous times already. We can no longer financially afford to protect the world (the only reason for a huge army, navy, and air force) at the expense of our own citizens (not to mention the foreign relations blowback).

For example, war gaming by reputable concerns (I believe it was Rand) has shown that stealth aircraft technology can be overcome simply by numbers... 10 high-dollar stealth planes can be defeated by, say, 50 or 100 cheaper fighters. The only use for the stealth airplane, therefore, is to sneak in and do some relatively minor damage -- to intimidate, or to perform a localized mission. Not winning a national, regional, or global war (while they would help in such an endeavor, they can be overwhelmed by inferior technology).

Therefore, the only need to "must maintain our technological advances in our military's advances in all areas" would be an attempt to influence and/or intimidate others. I challenge anyone to provide any solid path of evidence that such a goal has ever worked out in our favor, over the long term, while I can easily provide examples to the contrary (we can start with Bin Laden in Soviet Afghanistan, Hussein in 'Reagans' Iraq, and Pahlavi in 'Eisenhowers' Iran).

Back on topic, China is at a very early stage of it's military development; its aircraft carrier, recently ballhyhooed in the press, is a joke -- essentially a WW-II class vessel (does not even have a catapult). Of course they will advance, assuming they can afford it, but we are talking decades... probably 30-40 years to match our current level of deployment.

China is going to become the next super power without a doubt.

Actually, there is plenty of doubt, if you would watch the many warning signs out there...

Regardless, I wish the two Chinese characters in your avatar would become a reality for the common Chinese people...

Do you have any proof whatsoever? Because all the evidence points to the deregulation of companies, allowing them to empower China.

If the argument is that China is kicking our a$$, wouldn't that militate in favor of our becoming MORE socialistic so we can compete with their superior system? ;)

Why would they risk a war with us militarily when they're already taking us over economically?

Could you please link us to specific articles concerning China's military build up rather than a topic search on China's military?

Just take a devil's advocate approach...

Do you have any graphs that shows China's spending on internal security?

As I understand it, China's security forces, such as the People's Armed Police, have very close ties to the PLA. The PAP may be a close analogue to the U.S. National Guard in that they are a gendarmerie that can use military equipment for domestic purposes. Because of the PRC's authoritarian nature, they may put more emphasis on the PAP than they do the PLA. So equipment made for the PAP may be dual-roled for use by the PLA in case they decide to act militarily.
