American hikers get sentenced to 8 years.

8 years for Gross and Utter stupidity. My only complaint is that their female companion should be serving it with them. ANYONE stupid enough to go hiking along the border of a country like Iran gets exactly what they deserve. I have no doubt they're not spies and that the Iranian military crossed over into Iraq to cease them. However, they were stupid enough to go hiking in that area, and now they have to pay the price for that.

We have some pretty steep sentences for petty crimes in our own country, so I don't think anyone can really point the finger.

Iran is just playing tit for tat. On the other hand, the hikers should have known better. You don't take chances when it comes to real dictatorships.

Unfortunately, we can not rely on our own government stating they are students, not spies. They are not teenyboppers, college students, about the right age for spycraft, so who knows. The people that tell you Saddam has WMD, and Qaddaffi is killing civilians, and it's not about OIL, will give you their most sincere assurances that this is a group of students. Might better keep their mouths shut.

Can the US free the Cuban Five?

Good point and in regards to our own country you would be correct, actually we criminalize more of our own citizens than do most countries around the world.

Iran Reportedly Sentences American Hikers To 8 Years In Prison | FoxNews.com

Will anything be done to reunite these guys with their families or are do people think they were actually spies?

.... As I remember correctly, many on this board seemed to have no issue with a Mexican national being executed by the state of Texas even though Texas clearly broke international law in denying him certain rights. We now have no grounds to demand that our citizens be returned safely. Thanks Texas!

Much like North Korean border guards, Iranian militia have a habit of crossing the border. A few years ago they even captured an Iraqi oil facility close to the border and were subsequently expelled by the Iraqi military. BBC News - Iran troops 'seize Iraq oil well'

At any rate, entering Iran from the Turkish side is much easier and far less risky than the Iraq/Iran border area. The CIA is certainly aware of this.

Ah... that person I believed raped and killed someone.... you're honestly trying to compare that to this? Rights denied or no rights denied.

This sentence was a politically motivated jab at Washington and nothing more.

These people were not spying, its bull**** and the Iranians are doing it to piss off the US, nothing more.

We know that about the Iranian regime for some time now. Best to avoid the country, and its border.

Where there is smoke there is fire, or we could say if you play you will pay. Imagine me saying to a friend in a combat zone or hostile territory, lets go for a nice long walk on the front.

Wait wut? really? Only on DP can we find this kind of... logic.

Ah... that person I believed raped and killed someone.

Irrelevant. What a person's crime is does not give his accusers ground to deny him rights. If it does then Iran is perfectly within the accepted standard for denying people rights.

Sure.

Opinion.

It's cute to know your opinion on the matter.

What kind of fool do you have to be to plan your hiking trip in an extreme fundamentalist muslim state? I assume they were NOT spies...so its likely they will serve 8 years for being stupid.

As for the moronic comments comparing the execution of a rapist/murderer in Texas to this situation...yes...Im SURE that the Iranian judicial system...the one that kills people for being gay (wait...WOULD kill people for being gay...they dont have homosexuals in Iran-they hung those young folk for some completely unrelated thing...like...I think it wa s atraffic incident)...Im sure that were it not for the Texas situation they would have been kind and benevolent towards these hikers-even thought they were arrested and have been held long before the execution in Texas. What kind of a twisted moron would use THIS tragic siutuation to further their own idiotic ideology?

Logic? Logical would be a border guard applicant having a clue as to the consequences of not following international law. Do you have any of that logic?

Strawman make a person look really stupid. Here I'll put it in simple for you:

US doesn't follow international law.

US can't demand others follow international law.

US denies foreign nationals rights.

US can't demand others give US nationals their full rights.

See how reading helps you Mack? It's really a wonder when you learn to read posts properly.

I am lost for words to describe how much fail this post has.

I'm glad to see you have such high faith in the Iranian government.... Enjoy that.

Putting aside the American bashing.

Strawman is one person getting their "right" to consult their national government didn't change the fact he was guilty anyway... And rightfully executed, doesn't compare to on obviously political imprisonment by the Iranian government.

There is not a shred of evidence these people were spies.

Glad to see you have your priorities straight.

Jetboogieman, I've noticed. You're not debater who really likes being called out on his inability to make a strong argument. Do you believe you have a right to demand other countries give a fair trial if you don't afford it to others?
