BBC News - Google to buy Motorola Mobility for $12.5bn

Internet giant Google has announced a deal to buy Motorola Mobility for $12.5bn (£7.7bn).

Very interesting. Google gobbles up a ton of patents, and gains a phone manufacture company. While Motorola wont rival Apple just yet, the possibilities are huge down the road for it to challenge yet again the big players in the market.

Next we need Microsoft to buy Nokia :) and then let the phone/tablet wars 2.0 commence!

Microsoft I believe will have to buy a mobile phone maker to keep its operating system out there. If not potentially having to buy or create its own mobile phone operator that gives a preference to its system. It really looks like the battle is going to be between Android and Iphone as the top spots in the mobile phone business (smart phone) operating systems. Over time I expect Android to gain the top spot though

I think Google is one of the biggest threats to internet neutrality and diversity in the telecom market. Eventually it will have to be split up.

Android is already top....

They are not in the telecom market. As for internet neutrality.. well that is always a fear, but I fear more right wing PC censorship of the net.

They are not in the telecom market........

IIRC they are into the telecom business here in the US, funny that the service is "free" also. I guess it's true that "Sometimes one pays most for the things one gets for nothing"

My guess is it would be nice to have a free wireless phone also, I would bet google could give us all free service and still turn a profit(assuming we let them sell our personal information gathered during conversations etc).

Oh you mean Google Talk/Voice? They have had that for years and I dont see that at all as being a "telecommunications" company. Google does not (with the exception of Kansas I think) have "wires in the ground or masts in the air" and sell telephone or/and internet packages. That to me is a telecommunications company... Verizon, AT&T and so on.. Skype, Google Talk/Voice, Apple Facetime are software, not telecommunication...

I just hope they don't become one of those Companies that gets too big to fail.

The big thing will be service, if you don't provide quality service at an affordable rates you're dead in the water.

This genuinely surprised me...Motorola used to be a monster in its own right....google is getting to big for my likes....I stopped using its search engine a while ago....sad when I can say I trust microsofts bing more than google

Neither Google nor Motorola is a cell phone service provider. Motorola makes phones, and Google makes software (in the case of Android, for phones).

Unless things change drastically, it won't make a difference in your cell phone service. Especially if, as Google says they intend to, Motorola Mobile is kept as a seperate company that Google owns. After all, Motorola devices running Android is not a new phenomenon.

Keep in mind, a similar parody was used to poke fun of the new 3 blade mach 3 razor. Probably 5 years before its time, they made a fake gillette commercial about the 5 blade razer! As we know, the 5 blade razor was quite the success.
