Obama: Something is wrong with country's politics

Obama's ratings have NOTHING to do with the fact most people DO believe our political system is messed up. And it is ALL sides that are the problem. This fiasco with the debt ceiling proves that. All sides were willing to put Americas credit rating at risk just to score political points and try to jab the other side.

Yet it is Obama that presides over the downgrade anyway....You must be proud.

Because I appreciate the benefit of reading skills, and would like to spread them to my conservative brethren around here.

You see how those two sentences are right next to each other? I claim most people agree with Obama. The political system is messed up. The topic is the political system. Obama thinks it's messed up. Most people agree with him. Sometimes sentences have to be read with a little contextual nuance so that you don't come off looking silly. It's simple once you get the hang of it.

Glad I could help you.

The political system is messed up. On that I agree, but let's not be concocting some lame excuse that it is because conservative won't just roll over for "the One" and his open checkbook spending....That is intellectually vapid.

Thanks. I knew you'd see it my way after I explained it to you.

On that very small point ok...as to the why it is messed up though I have the feeling you and I are worlds apart.

But if you want to hang your hat on the miniscule, go right ahead, thanks for participating.

Hell yes something’s wrong with our political system.

The system is now based on the theory that we need protection from greedy rich people, and that the solution is giving the government more power to protect us from them.

But the disconnect will always be that the people we are given more power to are the same people we think we need protection from. The government will always largely be controlled by rich people. Even if you manage to change this for a short time, it will ultimately revert back the other direction.

If Obama said that there is something wrong with the political system it is because he can't get his way.

The single biggest problem I see with President Obama is that he is to willing to negotiate we need to bring FDR back!!!!!

There is only one reason he is now willing to compromise. November 2010.

To remind you what he said before those elections.

We don’t mind the Republicans joining us. They can come for the ride, but they gotta sit in back.”

Yes, let's bring back the man that turned a 2 year recession into a 10 year depression, and is at the heart of this problem of unsustainable, nanny state, unconstitutional welfare state to begin with....Good plan.

Do you have any evidence to back up the crazy sh*t you just said?

The 112th United States Congress will be remembered as the least productive session ever, worse than the 80th Congress, a.k.a., the "Do Nothing Congress."

Standard & Poor's downgraded their rating of U.S. Treasuries based on this performance.

The contrast with the 111th Congress which passed substantial health care and financial sector reform among much more, could not be more stark.

Obama is right.

I'll take the 112th over the 111th any day. I'd rather the government did less than more. Unless the more is deleting more regulations and laws.

When I see responces like this it makes me wonder who exactly is the government? Do we elect a government? You want the government to do less instead of more do you have any thing speciifics in mind or is it just a generalization, do you think we should remove stop signs or let people drive on either side of the road what exactly is it that you want deregulated? We need to bring back the greatest President the only President to ever be elected 4 times President Franklin D Roosevelt

How about things like noted in the thread about making all farm workers get CDL's?

So you "think" that the people elected FDR to four terms because he was the worst President Ever? Do you believe in having the people elect the President or would you like to appoint the president? Have you ever noticed how President Obama and FDR seem to have shared some of the same visions? Great minds think alike

buying votes does not make a good president.

history indicates that his policies were not just wrong, they were economically ignorant.

Don't worry, he found a black guy that disagree's with Obama. That proves Obama sucks, case closed.

Felonius Monk... (dare I say it)... for Prez? Sounds like he's got his head on straight.

I -love- how The Obama speaks like He and His people aren't part of the problem.

Oh, I have specifics. I would love to see the federal government phase out SS, Medicare and all other social programs. I'd like to see a lot of the overly restrictive regulations (i.e. TSA) go away. There are way to many specifics to list, but I do have specifics.

Frankly I'm sick of Obama bitching about the state of American politics. Although he's right that our political system is increasingly dysfunctional, he is the worst possible spokesman for that message. Voters eat that up when you're a candidate running for president...but when you actually ARE the president and you're whining about our political system, it makes you look ineffective at best and the source of the problem at worst. Obama needs to stop being a whiny little bitch and work to reform it if it's so dysfunctional. Has he proposed ANY serious action (either as a senator or as president) to reform our legislative process? Not that I am aware of.

I suggest the following steps to reform our political system:

1. Eliminate the filibuster. There is nothing in the Constitution mandating a 60-vote supermajority for legislation to pass the Senate, and this tactic wasn't even widely used until just a few decades ago. It would eliminate a lot of the gridlock and give us a more representative government if a simple majority vote was the required threshold in the Senate, as it is in the House.

2. Institute term limits. This would require a constitutional amendment, and I realize that it would be difficult to get congresspeople to vote to put themselves out of work. So I suggest a grandfather clause, to allow anyone who was currently serving in Congress at the time the amendment was ratified to continue serving indefinitely...and going forward, anyone else would be limited to a certain length of time in Congress.

3. Bring back the bipartisan lunches and events that Congress used to have. I know this sounds small, but never underestimate the impact of people actually getting to know one another as colleagues, instead of as "the opposition" on television. I think that this would be a very easy way to encourage cooperation and civility in Congress. It's much more difficult for people to launch vicious attacks on their friends on cable television, if they're going to have lunch with them the next day.

1: That FDR was elected 4 times in no way makes him the greatest President - you're arguing an appeal to popularity.
2: FDR's creation of the Federal welfare state set the stage for the mess we're in now - runaway entitlement spending, spending staunchly supported/defended by the Democrats so that they might gain and retain as much politcal power as possible.

Purely GOP talking points, without FDR this country would no longer exist as a republic, my guess is that we would be talking German or Japanese. President Obama does not have the benefit of a senate and congress that is united in a common effort to deal with an economy that was in total collapse when he took office, There are to many hands reaching out to plunder the last dollars left.

We do have a spending problem but it is used to mask the real problems we face today, the under employed or unemployed. Tax dollars that should have been used to create american jobs have been used to create jobs in foreign countries. The GOP's answer is to further erode our tax base by increasing unemployment in the USA, I want to see the day when cutting spending decreases unemployment.

The only real answer is to get the government involved in job creation here in America not in China or some other country, I can't believe that tax payer dollars are actually used to help corporations relocate over seas

Or to bring in one of the largest abusers as our jobs czar?
