GE moving X-ray business to China

Which really means very little, which is my point. Sure, if I am going to be poor, I'd rather be in the US. And in the US, I rather be poor in the north. But, it is not something that should be downplayed. Poverty is still painful, and still a problem.

Amy Winehouse was well off. Life can be painful.

The 2.3% is an excise tax the equivalent of a sales tax. Boston Sci will not pay it, the end user will and given the rate of inflation in the medical industry it would be barely noticed. If Boston Sci was the only medical device supplier paying the tax then I would agree with you. It is however a tax that will be applied to devices, just like a sales tax, sold. Since claim by some for Boston Sci to lay off people is the tax, why are other medical device companies not laying off people? Others should be in the same boat should they not, yet Boston Sci is the only one announcing layoff that I know off. Perhaps Boston Sci is somewhat bloated and has too much staff and the the excise tax is a good excuse to lean up a little

There are many places laying off and they are doing so not because of one thing but all things combined. To keep jobs here we have to get over the idea that all corporations are bad and holding up their fair share.

I wouldn't disagree with certain individual examples but most of these would be in the financial segment which are getting all sorts of government assisstance.

Not being in poverty does not mean you will have a nice life, but it sure helps

I was once in a position that I recieved Food Stamps. Really, life wasn't that bad. Life is what you make it. If you are constantly desiring what someone else has, well, you'll likely never be happy.

The only extra thing Boston Sci would have to face is Obama care, and given the size of the company, I expect they already offered health care to all its direct employees ( subcontractors for janitorial services and the like excluded)

Unless other medical device companies do the same, I doubt the 2.3% excise tax or other government policies enacted by the Obama admin would be the cause of the layoff any more the Rim`s layoffs are the cause of the Obama admin.

It is the financial worry that would be the main issue. Wondering if the bill for electricity, for gas for water will be paid for. Or if the car will make it too work next week. I grew up what would be considered poor for the city I lived in (the indian reservations were far poorer in the province). I didnt mind it too much, but the stress it put on my mother is another issue. I always had food, clothing and shelter, but I would not want to live with that level of stress worrying about money.

Sorry, I'm not saying "It's all Obama's fault" This has been a long developing problem. Many have had a hand in it. My position is that we shouldn't be adding to it.

Again I can point out that stress comes in many forms and there really is no way to completely eliminate any of it. Once you have 2 televisions, you want three, and then you want a better place to put it and then..........

That's right. Many of us have probably lived in genuine poverty but that doesn't mean we weren't leading fulfilling lives. There are many ways we can personally enrich ourselves and those around us without having a lot of money in the bank.

But I doubt many poor are worried about the number of tvs they have. The water bill, the electricity bill, the rent, etc. A TV at a pawn shop can be bought very cheaply, and is a one time expense. Paying for insulin every month is not.

Heck a used Xbox can be bought by a kid with a paper route money for a month or two. Any home in the US requires a phone either a cell or land. Getting or keeping a job without one would be difficult. Parts of the US will require a car of some sort to get to work ( unless you have rather kind friends)

Or more to the point

You can be poor and unhappy or you can be rich and unhappy, but I would rather be rich and unhappy

You can be poor and happy or you can be rich and happy, but I would rather be rich and happy

It tends to make things better rather then worse

Money might now be able to buy love or happiness, but it helps. ;)

Really the only thing I can say to that is, O.K. so?
