Norway's 21-Year Maximum Penalty Sparks Outcry After Terror Attacks That Killed 76

Re: Norway's 21-Year Maximum Penalty Sparks Outcry After Terror Attacks That Killed 7

you just pointed out the problem with the death penalty. The justice system is not perfect and the ability to reverse any decision is vital for a truly just outcome

No, actually its not. The needs of the many outwiegh the needs of the few.

Re: Norway's 21-Year Maximum Penalty Sparks Outcry After Terror Attacks That Killed 7

This is what happens in a tolerant, Socialist/Liberal Country that has run amuck and become wimps.

No crime screams slow painful death like terrorism such as this.

I say hang the bastard in a town square and let his toes just touch the ground.

Is that being vengeful? You damn bet it is. I hate the Islamic Cults but you have to admit that painful punishment keeps crime down.

In California we have a meaningless death penalty that when it is used is painless. I have been under general anesthesia more times than I can count and I assure you there is no pain other than a little pin prick.

The world is sometimes too nice all around.

As a Christian I should not feel as I do about this because I'm have a pretty good idea that this fanatic maniac will never be forgiven for this much sin.

First, allow me to make a correction to your theology: As a Christian you should realize that he CAN indeed be forgiven for "this much sin". In fact, his path to salvation is no more difficult than yours. Why it is unlikely that he will repent and get down on his knees to ask forgiveness, that is very much open to him. Moreover, as a Christian, your prayer should be that you see him in the Kingdom and are ready to call him brother. Though that is a difficult concept for many to grasp, it is correct Christian theology. (and, BTW, "hating" a group of people is also not a Christian virtue).

Moreover, before you call the Norwegians wimps, realize they operate a society that has far, far less crime and violent crime than that of the US (in aggregate and per capita). They are doing a lot of things right. We should be taking lessons from them.

No, actually its not. The needs of the many outwiegh the needs of the few.

Was not one of the basic principles of the justice system that it is better to let a thousand guilt men go free than to convict one innocent man? There is no need for the justice system to kill innocent people to benefit the many. the death penalty is not much of a deterent certainly not enough of one to kill innocent people.

Bold part: Yes it is. And that applies to convictions. Not death penalties directed at people that have been already been convicted.

The rest: imo it is. Especially as the DP protects more life than it kills also. How many guards have not died due to someone being put to death? How many prisoners lives have been spared due to the DP? How many lives on the outside of prison have been saved due to escapes thanks to the DP? Of course you wont find these numbers as it is impossible to determine the actual value so no one even tries.

I would wager that its a lot more than the 130 or so innocents that have later been proven to be innocent in this country....most of which was before they were put to death.

Also with the advent of DNA testing innocents being convicted will be far far less of a chance. Indeed it is mostly due to that DNA testing that has found that so many people have been later proven innocent.

Re: Norway's 21-Year Maximum Penalty Sparks Outcry After Terror Attacks That Killed 7

The only report of outrage in Norway comes from the OP source, which is less than reliable. This thread is no more than an excuse for those desperate to justify American lack of gun control. There is no depth too low for them to stoop. The xenophobic bigotry is merely a side-effect of their obsession.

Please...from what I have seen gun control wasn't even mentioned in this thread until YOU brought it up.

Re: Norway's 21-Year Maximum Penalty Sparks Outcry After Terror Attacks That Killed 7

Have any of you read about what a wonderful place prisons are in this dumb-assed socialist Nation. It's like being at club med.

Can luxury prisons and a more humane approach to detention be a deterrent for crime in modern society?

The answer lies in Halden, Norway.

About a 100 Km south of Oslo, a state of-the-art prison considered by many the World's most 'luxurious' has opened in June 2010, in a country already boasting criminal and rehabilitation systems of the highest standards.

Individual cells come with an en-suite bathroom, a flat-screen TV and various comforts. They measure 12 square meters (130 square feet) and are divided up into units (10 to 12) which share a living room and kitchen, similarly to a students' dormitory.

The windows are not fitted with bars, but thick glass is used instead.

The prison - the second-largest in Norway - costs 165m Euro and accommodates 248 male inmates. Some 760,000 Euro were spent just on artworks, some of which commissioned to Norway's most renowned street artist, Dolk.

The inmates can attend a vast range of formative courses at a official high school located inside the prison. Subjects can include languages, IT, science, catering, music, (there is even a professional sound studio) art and handicraft and several sports.

I am not sorry to say hang the bastard in the town square.

People who believe you can rehabilitate crazies are as nuts as they are, plus 10.

Thankfully Norway exists on a different planet than yours. If a Norwegian child murders another, they don't even get withdrawn from school. They do get heavy-duty therapy until they reach adulthood. They can and do rehabilitate people. Norwegian society does not suffer from the vigilante mentality, the blood lust, the vengeance-seeking. The "outrage" is American.

Re: Norway's 21-Year Maximum Penalty Sparks Outcry After Terror Attacks That Killed 7

Part of the reason most developed nations have a lower homicide rate than we do is because they don't execute people. Their governments don't relish in killing, therefore their people don't practice it as frequently. Sorry if that offends your bloodlust.

That said, I've always thought the 21-year max sentence was insane. There are some criminals that can never be made safe for society. And they should never be released. Releasing sociopaths, mass-murderers, joy killers, child molesters, and rapists just invites them to re-offend. They can't be rehabilitated. Releasing them is insane. I hope Norway will reconsider this policy.
No doubt you can support this notion (with real evidence), right?

And the part you are ignoring in the first part you address in the second

If it is better for a thousand guilty men to go free then to find one innocent man guility, is it also not the same to ensure that one innocent man is not found guility then murdered by the state?

Does a person serving life in prison really care about the DP or more about potentially being locked up in solitary for an extended period of time? Does a potential murderer weigh the costs of murder based on life in prison or facing the death penalty. I doubt any potential murderer is going to murder someone if all they have to face is life in prison, but not if the penalty is the death penalty. They are very unlikey to stop and consider the penalty, but the potential of getting caught vs not getting caught.

Here's a link.
Norway's Luxury prison
"But what about facilities, you might ask? My college dorm had a foosball table, and a vending machine! This prison can't match that, right? Wrong. Halden has a gym, training room, chapel, library, family visiting unit, football (possibly soccer) field, a school, and, most unbelievably, a sound studio. But it's the design that's most strikingly different from American prisons. Halden doesn't shy away from bright, cheerful colors, and actually spent about $1 million to hire a graffiti artist named Dolk (sort of their version of Banksy) to paint beautiful murals all around the grounds."
