BREAKING: President Obama Addresses the Nation Tonight at 9

Yeah, I have some phone calls to make.

Obama takes debt case to American people - Political Hotsheet - CBS News

"The American people may have voted for divided government, but they didn't vote for a dysfunctional government," he said. "So I'm asking you all to make your voice heard. If you want a balanced approach to reducing the deficit, let your Member of Congress know. If you believe we can solve this problem through compromise, send that message."

Invoking the words of former President Ronald Reagan, Mr. Obama asked Americans to consider the two sides of the argument: "Would you rather reduce deficits and interest rates by raising revenue from those who are not now paying their fair share, or would you rather accept larger budget deficits, higher interest rates, and higher unemployment? And I think I know your answer."

Interesting that he would resort to sampling Reagan and not himself when he said that raising the debt limit was nothing more than a failure in leadership.

Which Teapublican budget proposal do you support?

I don't speak for the Tea Party patriots and I am not expert on all their proposals but taxes should not be raised on anyone-especially those who pay too much of the burden as it is until massive painful cuts are passed to prove to us that the government is dealing in good faith

TRUE compromise would not involve tax hikes but rather each party suffering some cuts that they do not want

If I were Dictator, unconstitutional crap like the Department of Education would be gone in a heartbeat. so would some of the massive overseas nonsense that is not needed.

we don't need a ton of military in Germany now that the Warsaw Pact is pretty well toast

we spend way too much money on idiotic studies that serve no useful function such as studying the penis sizes of gay men or the mating habits of some creatures that are neither beneficial to us or a pest

Some military cuts are in order as well now that the Soviet Union is not the threat it once was (that does not mean cutting off your pension which seems to be your main issue)

most welfare functions are a state function and have the benefit of checks and balances meaning if some state is too generous with the taxpayers' coin, those taxpayers move to a friendlier state.

the war on drugs at a federal level again is clearly an unconstitutional function and demonstrates that the history of the prohibition era was forgotten. If a state wants to ban dope of blow that is a state power. If a state wants to allow blow or dope that is a state power as well

I know a lot about our justice system and how much it costs to say incarcerate someone for 250 months at USP florence or FCI Ashland. like 40-65K a year. do the math

Boehner's servers were crashed then. I got through to Senator Portman and COngressman Chabot. I expect to hear from both of them in the next couple days

Boehner, probably not. He doesn't know me nor was I one of his big contributors though other members of my family were.

This is what is wrong with America today. Representation.... for a price.

If the Republicans don't want Obama to have even more power, then they better deal with this debt ceiling issue and make it fast.

(Debt Ceiling Intransigence: Unintended Consequences...) The article is by Paul Craig Roberts.

If Republicans become obsessed with their agenda and refuse a reasonable deal, and the Democrats do not cave, the executive branch will be faced with an inability to continue its operations. This could mean, for example, that the troops in the various wars could not be supplied or paid, that air traffic controllers could not be paid, that the US government could not roll over the debt that comes due or issue the new debt that pays for 43% of federal budget expenditures. Unlike during the Newt Gingrich government shutdown in the 1990s, today “nonessential government” does not total 43% of federal expenditures unless we include the wars, which, of course, the Republicans don’t.

The US dollar could plummet in exchange value and lose its role as world reserve currency. The US would no longer be able to pay its oil bill in its own currency, and as its balance of payments is heavily in the red, the US has no foreign currencies with which to pay its oil import bill. Or its manufactured goods import bill, or any other bill.

We are talking about a crisis beyond anything the world has ever seen. Does anyone think that President Obama is going to just sit there while the power of the US collapses? He doesn’t have to do so. There are presidential directives and executive orders in place, put there by George W. Bush himself, that President Obama can invoke to declare a national emergency, suspend the debt ceiling limit, and continue to issue Treasury debt. This is exactly what would happen.

The consequences would be that the power of the purse would transfer from Congress to the President. It would be the end of the power of Congress. Congress, Republicans and Democrats alike, have already given away to the President Congress’ Constitutional right to decide whether the country goes to war. Now Congress would lose its power over debt, taxes, and the budget itself.

You don't sound like someone who is having fun. You sound like someone who feels he's entitled!

I haven't seen either speech but this post is a little ironic given how many on the left (not saying you, I don't know), resent failing to raise taxes on people as if the money they wouldn't have to pay somehow just belongs to...uh...society, I guess.

I watched both speeches and what I saw was a pair of pandering douchebags.

Can't agree. I didn't hear Boehner - had to run out for a bit, but I just read it.

The president is adamant that we cannot make fundamental changes to our entitlement programs. As the father of two daughters, I know these programs won't be there for them and their kids unless significant action is taken now.

The sad truth is that the president wanted a blank check six months ago, and he wants a blank check today. That is just not going to happen.

And in response to BO's nakedly transparent "kick the can down the road" dodge,

The individuals doing this work will not be outsiders, but elected representatives of the people, doing the job they were elected to do as outlined in the Constitution. Those decisions should be made based on how they will affect people who are struggling to get a job, not how they affect some politician's chances of getting reelected.

You know, I've always believed, the bigger government, the smaller the people. And right now, we have a government so big and so expensive it's sapping the drive of our people and keeping our economy from running at full capacity.

The solution to this crisis is not complicated: if you're spending more money than you're taking in, you need to spend less of it.

I doubt he wants to test the water on that one. It would probably end any chance he has for a second term.

Right, it's far too risky. Either way he loses on that one. If the courts slap him down, it's over. Even if not, he's the guy that continued to put us further into debt.

Looks like a bunch of talking points designed to appeal to conservartives, to me.

Let's be perfectly honest and summarize both speeches:

Obama: Boehner and the Tea Party sittin' in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G.

Boehner: I'm rubber and you're glue, anything you say bounces off of me and sticks to you.

More crap. Prime time speeches (from both sides) are nothing more than free campaign spots. So over the all the crap. They need to stop pandering and start working.

money had nothing to do with it

I grew up with Rob Portman. He called my dad "Uncle" as I called his father. His late mother, dying of cancer, threw an engagement party for my wife and I. We didn't know she was dying. The second time my wife and I attended a service in the cathedral where we were wed was for his mother's funeral. My dad was a close friend of Steve Chabot and ran a campaign for him many years ago for a minor office. Steve came in quietly to my dad's funeral. when one major league republican asked him about some political bit Steve said "not the time or the place, I am here as a friend of the man not as a politician"
