US authorities have arrested nearly 2,000 people on narcotics charges in a 20-month sting targeting Mexico's La Familia Michoacana drug cartel, the US Justice Department said Thursday.

The ongoing multi-agency takedown saw 1,985 people arrested, along with the seizure of about $62 million in US dollars, and more than 12 tons of drugs.

The arrests and charges were carried out in 12 states and the US capital Washington in a major operation dubbed "Project Delirium" and the announcement came just two months after Mexican law enforcement officials arrested La Familia leader Jose de Jesus Mendez-Vargas.

One hell of a big win here. Probably the biggest to date as far as I know.

A new high score!

Good job, Billy! Keep up the good work, whacking those moles. Maybe someday, we’ll finally teach them to stop popping up, but until then, we’ll just have to keep feeding the machine quarters (otherwise the moles win). Here's your budget for 2012, and never you mind all that debt talk going on.

Umm yeah...

but who was she hurting besides herself?

And why should people get locked up for simply possessing Marijuana when alcohol is more dangerous and addictive.

I have to deal with the end result of heavy alcohol consumption almost every night as a security issue, and I'm sick of it, if everyone was smoking weed, I wouldn't have to worry about them.

At the end of the day, Im not really big on legalizing heavy drugs... but I can see where those who are, are coming from, and all that power you're taking away from criminal organizations.

Hey man, legalize drugs dude, it's cool, they aren't hurting anyone but themselves man...

Take alcohol man, they aren't hurting one except themselves man,.. unless they like drive, or are abusive man... but that's like a personal choice man...

Oooh look at that a strawman!

If someone were to drive while under the influence of heavy drugs, I would support and direct that they be dealt with just as harshly as someone who was driving under the influence of alcohol.

In what way did I indicate otherwise?

But honestly Mr V. In my experience, with alcohol personally, and dealing with heavily intoxicated individuals on a daily basis which sometimes leads to threats to my safety, the fact that alcohol is legal while weed is illegal and a punishable offense, is a TRAVESTY to our civilization. Alcohol is the most destructive drug in our society and has been for a LONG time.

I agree with much of this and would add that most of the negatives attached to drugs such as the violence is due in fact to the illegality of them.

In the 1930s when William Randolph Hearst saw Hemp as a threat to his timber industry which supplied the paper to his News Paper empire he set out to go after it aggressively.

In that process Hearst used his vast News Paper Industry to demonize Marijuana even though Industrial Hemp is an ultra low grade form of Pot and real close to useless in getting high.

Hearst hated Mexicans and printed stories of Mexicans getting high on Pot and going on wild Murderous rampages.

At the same time the racism was tied to Black musicians, who could lose control, become delirious, etc.

DuPont and other fiber producers as well as pharmaceutical companies got into the act, and in 1937 it became illegal.

Now the police make money off of it being illegal, through budgeting, and seizures.

Having the crime that comes from it being illegal have become a self fulfilling prophecy, making facts hard to get into the discussion.

Other drugs are far more dangerous but the crimes also come from prohibitions for the most part.

With the amount of revenue produced by illegal drugs, it's inevitable that others will take their place, just as they have whenever a cartel has been seriously reduced by law enforcement in the past. The competition will probably just lead to more violence, and the meth heads will still get their fix just fine.

History shows that the only solution for this problem is treatment, but the rightwingers won't support paying for someone else's health care, so instead we get to waste our money on the War on (Some) Drugs.

It is, and it should be banned too, but that didn't go over well. Driving on the highway at night ot work I see a couple of drunks EVERY NIGHT. It's freaking scary really.

Edit: too slow, you already answered :D

Whoo more people to pack the jails with, more money pouring into the national penitentiary system and all for nothing, good job guys keep up the great work!

Everyone who loved her is hurting right now.

True.

But physically speaking she was only hurting herself and for those people, it sucks but she was an adult who made her own choices, fame is a double edged sword.

Freedom is a double edge sword. If you lived in a place were you had a cop in every house making sure you did nothing wrong to yourself and nobody else did any wrong to you life would be very safe but ill take the risk of freedom myself.

And again the libertarian argument is defended with absurd and unrealistic scenarios.
