Still No Budget Deal - Current Happenings

The dems cannot create a plan because plans have to start in the house, which they have no control over.

Of course they can. There is absolutely nothing stopping them from creating a plan. The Senate was working on a plan.

I must say. You have bigger balls than I do. I prefer not to risk the economy.

It is too late for the economy. Now it is time to save the nation. I, too, hope there is no deal if that deal includes tax increases. I absolutely agree with widening the tax base by compelling everyone to pay federal income taxes.

This is incorrect. Tax increase legislation begins in the House. Anyone can create a plan. As there should be no tax increases the Senate can go for it. Or the one term president...

I must say. You have bigger balls than I do. I prefer not to risk the economy.

Where's the economy going to go? Europe? Asia? China's economy cannot support the entire world at this current point in history. It's us or nothing.

I almost can't wait until all the parrots find out that August 2nd isn't actually a "made-up date."
And then Boehner went limp and pulled out.

LOL. We need not birth bigger, more expansive, more bullying federal government. So pulling out to prevent pregnancy sounds great to me.

All Liar Obama can do is say 'no'. He can't formulate a plan, because he's a coward, and he can't make a decision, because he's terrirified some segment of his Leftist base will deonounce him on details. OBAMA WILL BE THE DEATH OF AMERICA.

And yet, when the Republicans were in power, they did not decrease the size of the federal government. When not in power, they make noises about wanting to cut back the size and power of the federal government. When they get in power, they don't do so. I think it is games, perhaps not fun, but games. As long as a gullible public actually believes that there is a party that wants to decrease the power of the federal government, then those games will go on.

I don't disagree with that. Those times have been few when the GOP has controlled both branches and the Executive. I believe the 2010 election and the rise of the Tea Parties has changed the landscape. The time has come to see if I am correct or whether you are. I want my optimistic view to prevail over cynicism.

So do I, and it could happen that way. My cynicism proves wrong as much as 5% of the time, after all.

But I wouldn't put too much faith in the tea party.

Why do the dems, who have created no plan, remain absolutely blameless?

Huh, usually you're a level-headed enough person not to make wild claims like this.

Ok. I am getting sick of conservatives defending their new nazi party. If you are TRUE republican, and agree with what the GOP is doing in congress right now, you either are in denial that your party has held this country hostage, or you have a brain disorder that does not allow you to process real information. If you stand on NO TAXES, its probably because you think taxes would change for you, personally. This is incorrect. The republican party loves scaring Americans about tax hikes, unwilling to tell you Obama wants increases directly on those making 250,000 and above. This would not affect the average person.

If you look at real satistical facts over the last few decades, you will see whenever there is tax increase, job creation spurs, along with major defecit reduction. It happened in the Clinton years, and it would happen again, if your party would be willing to take the gun away from Americas head. All this TAXES WOULD KILL JOBS B.S. is the GOP directly protecting their employers, the rich, who are scared to death they may actually have to live with only 6 cars, instead of 10.

The GOP use to be respectable, and actually made sense at times, but this direction they are heading in right now is not only crazy, its really dangerous. America was setup to put aside differences at the end, and make decisions based on whats best for the PEOPLE, not corporations, not land owners, the PEOPLE. We are becoming a country of un-ending greed. If things dont change soon, I give this country 10-20 years max.

Godwin's law. You lose.

As of Thursday, Obama and Boehner had been working on a grand bargain that would produce roughly $3 trillion in savings over 10 years, the officials confirmed. But talks broke down along three major differences: the two sides were $400 billion apart on taxes, Obama rejected a last minute demand from the GOP that the deal include a repeal of the individual mandate in healthcare reform, and the two sides were still haggling over a difference of $40 billion in cuts to Medicaid, according to the White House.

What does the individual mandate have to do with the debt limit? This is the kind of thing that's holding up resolving this matter. Every time it seem all sides have closed in on agreeing to some type of settlement, somebody throws something stupid into the negotiations or figures they have to get into the game. At every turn it's been someone within the GOP.

First it was Cut, Cap and Balance, then it was cuts to entitlement programs, then it was the Gang of Six coming back to the bargaining table, now it's the individual mandate. If this country does go into default it will be because of Speaker Boehner and the GOP 100%.

I wish Obama had stood firm on letting the Bush tax cuts expire. They need to be dead like last year.

Revisiting the cost of the Bush tax cuts - The Fact Checker - The Washington Post

If there is one thing I am ashamed about Obama is his demeanor. He has the upper ground in this, yet it still seems to me he is giving in to the GOP on many issues, including Taxes.... specifically Bush tax cuts, which make me sick even talking about them. He needs to take a stand. DEMAND higher taxes, or watch your party (GOP) burn. 80% of Americans dis-approve of congress right now in a recent poll, i believe its 46% dis-approve of Obama. Still a bad satistic on Obamas part, but still in the drivers seat. I think he is a pretty smart guy, going in front of the public like he does, gives Americans a sense of "atleast someones looking out."

I watch ALOT of news, but the Average american probably watches an hour each night. It doesnt surprise me Obama has a poor approval rating right now, because the average american gets their "opinionated" news off the radio, which is largely republican biased media. I know whats going on in washington, I know whos holding us back, its the GOP...not directly....many good GOP leaders in power right now, specifically this damn tea party movement. IT NEEDS TO DIE OUT.

Here's an article from the WashingtonPost.com that gives an overview of what apparently went wrong with Friday's debt limit negotiations.

There are a lot of good articles running through what happened between Thursday night, when a deal seemed likely, and Friday evening, when the talks fell apart. New reports suggest that Boehner is trying to prepare a deal by tomorrow evening, to prevent the markets from dropping Monday. So here’s the short version of what just happened, and where we’re likely to be going:

On Tuesday, the Gang of Six proposed a deal that would raise tax revenues by $2 trillion — which showed there was support among Senate Republicans for a deal that raised taxes by about $2 trillion. On Thursday, congressional Democrats rebelled over reports that the deal Boehner and Obama were negotiating had only $800 billion in new revenue, and it wasn’t even clear how those would be achieved. That night, Obama called Boehner looking for about $400 billion more in revenue to have something he could sell to Democrats. That would have brought the deal from $800 billion in revenue to $1.2 trillion in revenue. He didn’t get a call back until the next day at 5:30 p.m. — by which point the call was unnecessary. Boehner had already told the media that he was leaving the talks.

Republicans are emphasizing that the White House went from asking for $800 billion in revenue to $1.2 trillion. The word you’re hearing from them is “reneged,” but the White House emphasizes that negotiations were ongoing, and both sides were asking for more as they tried to figure out what they could both agree on and pass through Congress. Boehner, for instance, wanted further cuts to Medicaid, a trigger that would repeal the individual mandate and the Independent Payment Advisory Board if the entitlement cuts didn’t come through, and a tighter cap on discretionary spending. “They make it seem like the president made some ultimatum on $1.2 trillion in revenue,” says a senior administration official. “He didn’t. He said, ‘If you can’t do this, let’s figure out what we can do.’ ”

On today's Meet the Press (7/24/11), the watch word was "compromise" and the concesus from the guess panel was that it was the Republican leadership that was putting up the most resistance. And that view was was shared by the Republicans on the panel.

As to why Speaker Boehner walked on of negotiations, according to the President's Chief of Staff, Mr. Daley, Boehner walked out because the Gang of Six' debt limit proposal included more tax revenue than what was being proposed through the leadership negotiations. As such, the President apparently asked Boehner if the higher revenue could be included in negotiations. Per Daley, this wasn't a hard selling point; it was just an inquiry and Boehner left the negotiating table. It should be noted that this is atleast the second time a member of the GOP has walked away from talks, but no Democrat has abruptly ended talks thoughout these negotiations...none!

So just for the record. You are in favor of getting rid of the entire Bush tax cuts. I agree they are unafordable and if congress got rid of them all, instead of cherrypicking that would be great.

No that would be a lot more than 400 billion over ten year, it would be something like 3 trillion.

I'm pretty sure the Tea Parties don't care about how much faith you or I have in them. I'm just glad that they have put pressure on Congress to downsize the current government. I hope they succeed.

I believe the deal was for $800 billion over ten years and the President demanded $400 billion more over ten years.

The extra 400 billion was to raise rates on the upper bracket people. It was a lousy negotiating tactic. If you were ever in a major negotiation, you would know that throwing in a point that is impossible for the other side just causes a breakdown in talks. The President understands the game he is playing. The good news for him short term is that most of the people are buying his pronouncements as if they are fact. Sad that even at the expense of throwing the country into another recession he is more than willing to play politics ( not that the other side is any better).

On this note, I will offer no rebuttal.

There are too many nutters in the Tea Party whether or not I remember to capitalize the phrase.

Sory, but I wasn't concerned about your capitalization. If anything was wrong, it would be your use of the singular, party. It's plural.

You say that average Americans are nutters. Okay. That's you opinion.
