'Massive heat wave' on way; Okla. tries prayer - Weather - msnbc.com

In the thick of the heat wave is Oklahoma where Gov. Mary Fallin asked Oklahomans to pray for rain this Sunday.

"The power of prayer is a wonderful thing, and I would ask every Oklahoman to look to a greater power this weekend and ask for rain," Fallin said in a news release on Thursday.
Fallin on Thursday also issued a ban on outdoor burning for the western half of the state because of the extreme drought conditions.

Prayer does not work, never has, never will. There is ZERO scientific evidence. it only give people that warm fuzzy feeling.

A little prayer never hurt anyone.

of course it doesnt, but it makes people look silly and foolish. Especially when the government tells you to pray.

Because obviously God is just a make-believe cartoon super action hero brought about by our superstitions and fears.

Save it. We've heard it before. We're just not as intelligent as you.

Wow! I have to agree :)

Oh i got a chuckle out of this.

Well, for one thing; we both know it won't hurt anything, right? And Oklahoma is huge "Bible belt" territory. Two, it helps all those people who currently feel incredibly powerless, because there is not Jack they can do, to feel like they're actually doing something. And who knows. Stranger things have happened (and frequently do).

Nothing wrong with asking God to send rain. I applaud the governor for doing this.

God called, said he doesn't really like Oklahoma all that much, so he will not interfere with the weather for them.

Better luck next time.

Earlier this year Texas Gov. Rick Perry asked Texans to pray for rain because of the drought there.

Apparently there's a precedent.

OK, though; he didn't even say 'God.'

“I encourage Oklahomans of all faiths to join me this Sunday in offering their prayers for rain,” Fallin said. “For the safety of our firefighters and our communities and the well-being of our crops and livestock, this state needs the current drought to come to an end. The power of prayer is a wonderful thing, and I would ask every Oklahoman to look to a greater power this weekend and ask for rain.”

Well obviously Oklahoma has a significant number of homosexuals, fornicators, backsliders, abortionists, double dealing scoundrels, papists and atheists or it wouldn't have a weather problem. God is pissed at Oklahoma.

Meh, they can pray for whatever they want. It's a free country.

Except for the children who were denied medical treatment because their parents believed in the power of prayer.

Start your own thread on that note, *she said politely*; and welcome to DP.

Here we are to have heat index of 110 to 115 through Tuesday, we aren't running off whining to anybody about it, we just deal with it.

See, this is why I turned the job of being god down. You have no friends and the only time anybody ever talks to you is when life gets ****ty and they want you to bail them out. And people wonder why he left everybody hanging. Frankly, I wonder what took him so long to piss off.

*God hears voices in the background while chilling on the couch with a brewski*

"Oh, crap, I forgot to make it rain in Oklahoma for the past couple months, I'll have to get right on that!"

*Hears more voices*

"Shut up gulf coast! Where else am I supposed to place my hurricane collection? Whiny bitches!"

I don't care if private citizens pray, or if a religious leader asks people to pray. But when an government official asks people to pray, that's another issue altogether.

I'm a firm believer in the separation of church and state. I find this kind of act unconstitutional.

Fun fact...

Before Rick Perry asked people to pray for rain...

After people prayed.

Whatever you do, don't pray. It appears to make things worse! :)

An acting Governor whether in Texas or Oklahoma should not use the power of their office to promote religion. This includes asking people to pray for rain or attend a prayer rally.

Oh, ffs. He ASKED. He didn't order. It was a polite request.

Well, it was good enough for the American Indian's praying to the Great Spirit for rain, it should be good enough for Oklahoma-ins and their local / state government.

Really? I disagree. Oh look! We cancelled each other out. :D Welcome to the board.

But he liked the Native Americans, just not enough to offset the others in the state. :D
