McConnell invites Obama to GOP lunch; president says no, thanks

The Senate’s top Republican invited President Obama to a GOP lunch at the Capitol to discuss the ongoing dispute over the debt and related issues, but the White House on Thursday rebuffed the invitation.

A day after the president at his news conference challenged Congress and especially Republicans to move quickly on the nagging question of increasing the debt ceiling, Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky), the minority leader, urged Obama to meet with Republicans to explain his position.

The President scolds congress for not doing enough to resolve the debt issue and compares them negatively to his daughters and says that congress should forego its 4th of July recess to “do their job” and work on a solution to the debt crisis and “get it done”. The Senate forgoes its recess, as suggested and the Republicans invite him to join them for lunch to try to work on this issue but he refuses because it’s “not a conversation worth having”? Instead he flies to Philadelphia for another fundraiser?

He has been AWOL on this entire issue and the day after he chastises republicans for “not doing their job” he decides his fundraiser is more important than him showing up to do his job for a change.

This guy is certain to be a one term President because the Voters are going to do their jobs in about 16 months when they throw this lazy butt to the curb and elect someone who will take the job serious.

Alternative headline:

Republicans invite president to lunch but he has previously scheduled engagement.

All this crap is smoke and mirrors from both sides. We have no freaking idea what is going on in the real world of Washington politics between the GOP leadership and the White House. Anyone who believes all this is playing out in front of the American people exactly as it appears is away with the fairies.

Yep. One that is much more important to him than resolving the debt crisis.

You see, it is ok for him to demand that they drop their plans and forego their holiday recess but don’t expect him to cancel his “non-presidential” plans to act like a real leader.

What's the engagement?

Which is certainly more important eh?

When's he suppose to get in a round of Golf?

All they'd have to do is say "We've revisited our stance, and we'd like to discuss it with you." But I wouldn't take a meeting either if they just want to lockstep some more. He doesn't have time for that ****. He already KNOWS that ****. So no meeting necessary.

You can't negotiate if you refuse to take the meeting. But I can see why he'd rather raise campaign funds. He's scared to death to actually do his job.

Do you think it's fair to complain about Obama's absence from the talks when you all know his time is valuable on the campaign trail, at fund raisers, and as the Prof said on the Golf Links.

Come on get you priorities in order.

If Obama is replaced in 2012 he won't be able to keep spending your tax money on his personal trips, parties and illegal fund raisers at the White House.

He would also not to plan to make another Blame America first apology/appeasement tour of Islamic Countries in the Middle east.

I'd skip a lunch with a bunch of buffoons too. Can you say indigestion?

Recess canceled; Senate to work next week on debt
For next week, Reid laid plans for the Senate to debate legislation authorizing U.S. involvement in Libya. He told reporters that Democratic senators would also discuss the deficit standoff with Obama next Wednesday at the Capitol or the White House, meet with administration economic advisers and learn about a deficit-cutting plan crafted by Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad, D-N.D.

"What we have to do is too important to not be here," Reid said.

But GOP senators belittled the plans, saying little would be achieved.

"Talk about Libya? How does that answer the concerns expressed by the president" about the debt limit, said Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss.

This is ridiculous. The President decides his fundraisers are more important than sticking around to work on this issue after he lambasted congress for not working hard enough on this issue.

In response, the Senate cancels their scheduled holiday recess to deal with this issue and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid schedules the Senate to debate authorization of Libya? Are you friggin kidding me???

I can’t believe these idiots. Standard & Poor is going to drop the U.S. credit rating of AAA to D if it defaults but Harry Reid is scheduling a debate on Libya instead of the debt limit crisis??? Are these morons intentionally trying to destroy America?

The Libya issue is stupid. The President either broke the law a long time ago or he didn’t. It is preposterous of them to think a bill that gives him authorization now (after the fact) is more important than the debt limit crisis.

I just can’t believe the insanity of these idiots.

What's wrong with meeting without preconditions now?

He said he would do it with our foreign enemies, what about his domestic enemies?

He goes to the podium, talks smack to the entire country and world, and the R's offer him what he was crying about. Now, to steal and augment a line from Kenny Rodgers... Obama... he's The Coward of the Country.

Yes, I get indigestion just knowing that you are probably allowed to vote.

Your hero’s hypocrisy is going to destroy this nation’s economy yet you support him no matter what. He can do no wrong in your eyes can he?

Towhich the real purpose behind McConnell's GOP Senate luncheon invite:

That way he can hear directly from Republicans why what he’s proposing won’t pass,” McConnell said. “And we can start talking about what’s actually possible.”

Why sit down with them when: 1) they're only going to rehash the same bullheaded stance - no tax increases whatsoever; and 2) only to be dictated to which was the real goal for this luncheon.

He's the freakin' President of the United States! Why should he be dictated to even by Congress? I mean, it's funny. One minute Congressional Republicans are demanding that Pres. Obama show leadership. The next, they're trying to gould him into doing what they want him to do and dictate the terms. And once he sits with them, they can say "He's weak! We got him to do what we wanted him to do."

I don't think so. Even I would fall for that trap. Just to re-emphasize where both sides of the negotiations currently stand:

Democrats are seeking what they call a balanced approach, asking for $760 billion in tax revenues, largely by cutting tax breaks on corporations and wealthy individuals, which Republicans oppose. Both sides back spending cuts, but they have yet to reach final agreement on the size and programs to be trimmed.

Dems have compromised and agreed to spending cuts. Where's the Reps olive branch in giving up some of their sacred cows?

Oh, I dunno...because he works for them, maybe? It's that whole co-equal branches of government thing.

Besides, he was headed for Camp David, today. He didn't have time for all that governing crap.

The President doesn't work for Congress. He, like they, are public servants and, as such, works on behalf of the people of the United States.

It's that whole co-equal branches of government thing.

What does that have to do with the topic of discussion?

Which according to his schedule on whitehouse.gov departed today at approximate 4:30pm (EST). Unless his 10:45a meeting with his senior staff went past lunch, he could have dined with the GOP Senators if he wanted to. But as I said, why should he sit and listen to them repeat their same stubborn position knowing they're not going to budge? What would be the point?

I’m glad you asked.

The point would be to find a way to avert what will likely be the worst economic disaster in U.S. history if he doesn’t sit down with the Republicans to find some common ground and work out a deal.

The President wants to negotiate with the Taliban for crying out loud, you would think he could handle negotiations with Republicans considering what is at stake. Not this President though.

He has a choice; he can find a way to get a deal done or he can allow the nation to fall into total economic chaos. Obviously he is choosing the latter. My question to you is why?

Why is he choosing the US default/disaster scenario?

He's scared.

I don’t think he is scared, I think he is all mouth with no backbone.

When he first got elected I thought he was simply incompetent. Obviously the problem goes much deeper than that because he has shown himself to be one of the most arrogant Presidents we have ever had even though he hasn’t accomplished anything that wasn’t started by someone else.

In fact, I challenge anyone to give me an example of true leadership from this President. The only example I can think of is Libya. Anyone got a better example?

Barack Obama said:
I reserve the right as President of the United States, to meet with anybody at a time and place of my choosing, if I think it's going to keep the United States safe. - Barack Obama, 1st Presidential debate, Sept 26, 2008

It's too bad Mr. Obama won't meet with our own legislative members. Give his past rhetoric, I can only conclude such economic issues are not relevant to the safety of the United States.

Editorial, 7/2: GOP walkout is shortsighted

It's too bad the republicans won't meet with our own Vice President. Oh wait.......I forgot that the wingers think it's OK when the republicans do it!!!

Its OK for the repubs in Congress to take 163 vacation days, but it's wrong for Obama to take one
It's OK for the republicans to refuse to negotiate, but it's wrong for Obama to do the same

Nope, no hypocrisy there. And no poutrage

It is when Obama will meet with others and has made the claim publically. Can you cite where the Republican leadership has said the same? No?

Thanks for playing ... we have a nice concession gift for you.

the speech after the Giffords shooting where he basically told his own base to shut up and sit down. I'd call that one a thumbs up.
