Ron Paul wants gold at Fort Knox audited - Jun. 24, 2011

So, with all the issues facing America today, the debt/deficit, war in Afghanistan, whatever it is in Libya, unemployment over 9 %, two parties who cannot figure out how to work together for the common good...and what is Ron Paul calling congressional hearings over?

Paul called a congressional hearing Thursday to grill federal officials about his bill to audit and inventory all of the gold reserves at Fort Knox, Ky., West Point, N.Y., and Denver, even though Treasury officials insist that the gold is audited annually and is all there.

During the hearing, Paul suggested that the Federal Reserve of New York, which has 5% of the U.S. gold reserves, has the ability to secretly sell or swap gold with other countries without anyone knowing.

"The Fed is pretty secret, you know," said Paul, who leans Libertarian. "Congress doesn't have much say on what's going on over there. They do a lot of hiding."

The guy is totally looney, totally insane.

No, but it might preempt any discussion of diddling with the gold for the "purpose" of deficit reduction.

Blatant Baseless Appeal to Ridicule

How does this make him insane? The Fed has been dumping gold onto the market to try to slow the rapid increase of the value of gold for the past several years. And should they ever run out that could mean SERIOUS problems for our treasury.

And hasn't Ron Paul opposed every bill that has brought about the debt/deficit that you think he should be focusing on? You do realize he is the chairman of the subcomittee on the Fed right? This is his job. But I suppose to some, a politician doing his job rather than wasting our money is a bit looney, looney being a relative term. I suppose you consider his attempt to audit the Fed are equally insane right?

You're fine with the government participating in fraud and call those who speak out against that fraud insane?

Do you have evidence to support your accusations? Some reason to think there is less gold there than thought? Any other conspiracy crap you buy into?

Quiz: What do Ron Paul, Newt Gingrich, Michelle Bachman, Sarah Palin, Dittohead Not!, and Rick Santorum all have in common?

Answer: None of us is going to be president in 2012.

The Federal Reserve Act: Section 14

Some reason to think there is less gold there than thought?

They've sold alot when the price was much lower, I would be surprised to find out how they could afford to buy it back at current prices. Of course they could have, but with what funds? And which foreign central banks have they been propping up? Businesses? National banks? These are important questions that would certainly affect the decisions of the consumers of these financial institutions.

Any other conspiracy crap you buy into?

Just what "conspiracy crap" do you think I buy into? Do you understand the purpose of the subcomittee on the Fed? Why are you opposed to an audit of the Fed? Can you discount the concerns Ron Paul has stated in any way? Or are you just going to bundle my post with someone else's so you don't have to address my arguments or the fact that the man is doing his job and you cannot justify your BASELESS appeal to ridicule.

So we should be okay with the government lying to us about the gold it has stored? Do you realize if it is true how much commodity markets have been manipulated?

transparency is crazy.

we are just too busy to undertake this form of transparency. What with our super low unemployment numbers, where would we ever find available people to do such a thing?

And he is the insane one?

lmao

Redress said it...WITH all the problems we have, Ron Paul wants fort knox audited and pairs with Barney Franks to legalize marihuana....the guy is a loose wheel and his son is identical only alot meaner along with being nuts

The argument that we have more pressing matters at this time is reasonable, to call him nuts because of this is absurd. If you were to look at all the things our congressmen are working toward at any given time I think you would find many cases that could be considered as ridicules or worse. Sadly I feel most strive for self interest and present their causes as "best for the country". While many view Ron as off base with many of his views I feel he honestly tries to do what is right by the people. This to me makes him far more respectable then 95% of the others regardless if I agree with him or not.

I thought he was nuts long before he did this...Everytime he opens his mouth he says something that makes me cringe, laugh or shake my head bewildered.

So doing his job is insane, but prohibition isn't?

the op is an embarrassment for labeling calls for transparency as insane and his defense of this embarrassment was down right pathetic.

government corruption IS america's primary problem. this issue is a hell of a lot more serious than the war in libya and any other
media hoopla obama is inventing to distract from the downfall of this country.

I agree with Ron Paul that a full accounting of the gold reserve is called for, but I doubt the gold is gone in a physical sense. Most likely a signficant part of the gold has been `loaned out` to investors and does not belong to the Reserve as such

I was just reading last month that in the same national address (1974?) in which he imposed wage/price controls, Nixon said the US dollar would no longer be backed by gold. It seems that the week before this, a British bank had demanded that $4 billion it held in US currency be converted to gold.

Are you sure it was a the british?

I thought it was the french who caused the US to leave the gold standard

I'm fairly sure the author specified a British bank. But no, I'm not positive. That was about a month or so ago and it was just one tidbit in a rather lengthy (and dry) book about the history of energy in the United States.

My apologies if my memory is faulty on this.

HyperPartisan hacks do that ya know.

While even I think Ron Paul is a bit off kilter, he's on the subcommittee, if he has some evidence (he should produce it to bolster his cause) then his call is most justified. If his evidence is something from alexjones...

So, what if the gold is gone? It's not like we actually use it for anything. It doesn't back up the dollar. It's just kinda sitting there. We should sell it or something. Maybe we can make some progress on the national debt that way.
