New York lawmakers to vote on gay marriage within hours | Reuters

ALBANY, New York | Fri Jun 24, 2011 7:11pm EDT

(Reuters) - New York state senators will vote on whether to become the sixth U.S. state to allow gay marriage later on Friday or in the early hours of Saturday, Republican senators said.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos and Republican Senator George Maziarz both said a marriage equality bill would be voted on by the Senate.

New York could become the sixth and most populous state to allow gay marriage if bill introduced by Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo is approved by the Senate. Only one more Republican senator needs to support the bill for it to pass.

First, hats off to Dean Skelos who is himself opposed to SSM, but is allowing it to come to a vote.

It's not a done deal, but the odds are good this will pass today. What makes it important is that NY does not have a residency requirement to get married. This would allow people from across the country to travel to NY to get married. I am cautiously optimistic that this could pass. They need 1 more vote, with 3 undecideds.

Yeah I hope it'll pass also... our system here is retarded, the majority leader has the sole authority to bring a bill to vote.

Hopefully it will pass. If so, it'll be one more step in the right direction.

Crossing my fingers. I heard the vote will go down around 10.

The bill passed!!!!

Edit, not the SSM bill, but a religious exception amendment, but the SSM bill looks good.

didn't pass yet.. if it passes my gay neighbors down the road said they were going to shoot off fireworks. They have their pride flag out front and everything.. good for them, they are elderly and are planning to marry as soon as it passes.

Oh you tease!

Now it passed!!

Common sense prevails, hopefully it will throughout the rest of the country.

I'll wait for it to be somehow challenged. But a good victory nevertheless.

I'm surprised that it took NY this long, but good news nonetheless.

After the initial hooplah, we can then watch as crickets chirp and the world remains.

Nope. This ends the world, since any gay couple in the country can come to New York and get married due to the lack or residency requirement there. And when DOMA goes down in flames(next year?), that effectively makes SSM legal across the country.
