Ron Paul, Barney Frank team up to legalize marijuana

Cannabis should have never been banned.

This is a good step foward.

Well, it's screwing up my son's life. So I'm not so sure.

Has he been in jail? Because I know jail won't help him.

Your son can get it whether it is legal or illegal.

Please get him in a rehab program if you can.

i dont think now is the time to be addressing this issue, bigger more pressing problems are spiraling......and when you get right down to it, is legalizing marijuana really all that important to society?.....its obviously not to hard to get

Counseling...therapy...but not a rehab program. No detox required for marijuana use and he wont stop without being able to understand why he continues to use if it is screwing up his life. Marijuana cessation programs arent all that effective in my experience.

To American-and no, dont feel compelled to answer...its your family business...
...but...Out of curiosity...how is 'marijuana' screwing up the boys life? is it the marijuana or is it his other life choices? Just curious...not prying. I walked through a glass door when I was a kid stoned out of my mind. I was a regular user but I would be dishonest if I said it was the drugs that were doing it to me.

Is legalizing guns really that important. They're obviously not hard to get!

It makes no sense to spend billions of dollars jailing people for using a substance less harmful than alcohol or tobacco.

Of course it is. There is a lot of money to be saved by not enforcing laws on marijuana. Lots of people pay hefty fines then have to pay for court ordered treatment. Add in the tax benefits to sales (in states that end up legalizing it) and its an all around plus.

Well, the Constitution legalized guns.....

Update:

This photo of Frank and Paul was taken earlier today during a joint press conference.

If they legalize it I might actually give it a whirl. Never been very interested in trying it after watching my brother go to jail for weed.

I hope they get it though. There's more harmful crap i could go buy from walgreens right now.

Well, it's screwing up my son's life. So I'm not so sure.

Since you brought this up I'm curious, though you don't have to answer, how exactly?

Is it due to legal trouble he's gotten in? In that case, its not the MJ that's screwing up his life its the laws making it illegal and his choice to engage in it.

Is it due to smoking it too often? Again, in that case its his self control that's screwing up his life, not the drug.

Ditto if he's spending too much money on it.

Is it because he's getting in with a bad crowd? Again, that is related to both of the above things.

Unless he had some kind of allergic reaction to it or one of the extremely rare cases where it helps to trigger an already present mental problem, I'm not sure how you can blame the marijuana. Its no different than when people complain that guns kill people.

Marijuana is for hippies and commies, if we legalize that, we'll become one of them and John Lennon will win. I don't want my country looking like that

Why is it for hippies and commies?

Ron Paul, Barney Frank to jointly offer bill to end war on weed

Anyone think this has a chance of passing?

Ron Paul, Barney Frank to jointly offer bill to end war on weed - latimes.com
Congressmen Ron Paul, Barney Frank and others will introduce legislature Thursday that aims to end a major part of the war on drugs -- namely the battle against marijuana.

Reps. Paul (R-Texas) and Frank (D-Mass.), though technically on opposite sides of the aisle, have often spoken out against the war on drugs and will propose a bill "tomorrow ending the federal war on marijuana and letting states legalize, regulate, tax, and control marijuana without federal interference," according to a statement from the Marijuana Policy Project via Reason.

The bill would allow the individual states to decide how they want to deal with pot. Currently the federal government bogarts U.S. law, oftentimes arresting owners and employees of medical marijuana facilities, for example, who thought they were operating legally under city, county and/or state laws.

"The legislation would limit the federal government’s role in marijuana enforcement to cross-border or inter-state smuggling, allowing people to legally grow, use or sell marijuana in states where it is legal," according to the MPP statement.

I think Paul is nuts about heroin, but I agree with legalizing pot. Like repealing prohibition, the violence associated with the illegal transport and sale of it would be greatly reduced. Also, like Tessa said, it would be taxed

Do you think the logic that applies to marijuana doesn't apply to heroin and other "hard" drugs? Prohibition creates a black market, it doesn't matter what substance is being prohibited. And criminals will happily step up and fill the void created by prohibition, and they will use violence to defend their business.

Why not now? Can't congress address multiple issues at once?

As for the importance of legalizing marijuana, how about decreased government spending by not needing to arrest, prosecute, and jail offenders of marijuna laws? How about removing an important revenue stream to criminal cartels? And creating a potential new revenue source by allowing it to be taxed? Those seem like kinda important benefits to me.

You win the award for the day. I can't say what the award is without risking an infraction, but trust me you win hands down!

I personally think that this country is not ready to see hard drugs legalized. I don't think we want a world where people can go out and buy something like heroin with ease. Heroin is not like pot. You can't just talk to any idiot you're friends with to get your hands on smack.

Was it really a joint press conference, or did they sit down with a gin and tonic?

May be if marijuana wasn't illegal, he wouldn't spend a fortune for it (and may be grow it himself) and would make ends meet? He also won't be afraid of going in jail, so that's very important for his overall condition too.
