Ron Paul, Barney Frank team up to legalize marijuana

IMHO the US economy would turn around over night if marijuana was legalized, taxed, and regulated. There's a place for smaller businesses that sell pot to thrive as well. Just see what's happening in California. Big business doesn't necessarily have to control that market. There would also be no reason for pot smugglers to cross the border, and underage consumption would drastically decrease. I feel confident marijuana's place in society would mirror alcohol following prohibition.

Yup... california has like a 2 trillion GDP... that's higher than Canada and it'll probably overtake Italy.

May be if marijuana wasn't illegal, he wouldn't spend a fortune for it (and may be grow it himself) and would make ends meet? He also won't be afraid of going in jail, so that's very important for his overall condition too.

Yeah, that must be the answer.

I say legalize it....It could singlehandedly pull Frito Lay, and the Keebler Elves out of their slump.

Pot would lose its "cool" factor. lol. It wouldn't be "counter-culture" any more. It's standing in our society and our social consciousness would prob'ly diminish even though it would become more present physically because ti would lose its "social meaning".
I mean prob'ly. imho. ymmv

How many people have died in an overdose from pot vs. alcohol?

Or been the cause of any fatal vehicular crashes like when driving drunk? Actually, maybe we should legalize all drugs and let the people decide for themselves as to whether or not they should use them. They're going to get them anyway as has already been proven. Besides, legalizing them would certainly put a stop to the drug trafficing. And the gov't could add on a tax to help solve its financial woes.

Yes libertarians your hero Ron Paul isnt nuts...<smirk> Bipartisanship at its best right lol

Here's one of the strangest pairings of late in Congress: Reps. Ron Paul and Barney Frank are teaming up today on legislation to legalize marijuana.

The legislation by Paul, a libertarian-thinking Texas Republican running for president, and Frank, a liberal Massachusetts Democrat, is being touted by the advocacy group Marijuana Policy Project (MPP).

One would have thought that this would be a pretty easy one to sell to conservatives at it would help solve the illegal immigration issue, along with multiple others (especially if you legalized cocaine while you were at it).

If you legalized marijuana that was grown in licensed premises in the U.S (gotta do something economically viable with the everglades...) this would deprive drugs cartels of almost all their income (few people in Latin America are going to pay the kind of money that those in the U.S do). This would mean no more armed gangs crossing the border to smuggle drugs, and no more people fleeing a 'War on Drugs' that has killed more people then the war in Afghanistan. Indeed if you stopped screwing over Latin American agriculture then farmers might even be able to make money of legal crops in Latin America and you could almost eliminate both problems.

You could justify it from a national security perspective 'END US DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN DRUGS'

Actually, I am pretty sure people will still like to get high.

These two will have to defeat the alcohol lobbyist first.

What exactly is going on with this bill OP? Has it been referred to a certain committee yet or what?

this could only happen if we eliminated age requirements - which I think is a bad policy to pursue.. the "cool factor" is a phenomenon that develops in early adolescence and since pot would still be taboo for teens, it would remain "cool"

Pot isn't that counter-culture anymore. It's too mainstream for that ;)

This... it's totally socially acceptable now to smoke marijuana. Just legalize it already and stop wasting time and money.

I'm still going to say no. ;)

If someone smokes pot on their couch and then watches MTV for the next 4 hours, you believe that justifies taking legal action against them? Why?

The sooner we legalize pot, the sooner we can spend even more money chasing down the people who evade the taxes.

That's going to be awesome.

BTW, how many millions of dollars in the rears are the legal pot sellers in California?

But that's not really a problem with alcohol and tobacco is it? Why do you think that is?
